I thought it was interesting. A BOF Toyota truck being discontinued certainly piques my interest as a 4runner owner.

Philsey and Titanpat are being dicks and contributing nothing to the thread. They should just avoid the threads they don't find interesting.

Which they could not do if it weren't for FJs and their rally. Jesus man, chill out. Why are you getting so agitated that something got posted in the 5th Gen forum that apparently doesn't meet your criteria for 5th gen worthiness? Have the mods move it if you don't like it and it's ruining your day. Seems like some of my other 5th Gen brothers didn't mind seeing the post.

You probably are one of these types that relishes that high post count next to your name and this gives you some false sense of superiority over us lowlings eh? I'll believe when I see it as FJ's demise has been rumored for the last 5 years. . Funny thing is they just started selling them in Australia,the Middle East and Japan in the last few years.
According to some of the guys over on the FJ forum ,you need to read between the lines as Toyota announced FJ's will be discontinued for Fleet sales which are not the same as individual consumer sales. I'm still not sure how Fleet Line-up and Production Line-Up mesh?

Also I have never seen a "Fleet" FJ Cruiser so I guess it doesn't surprise me that they drop it?

I think a modded FJ Cruiser is a neat toy, even if the visibility takes a lot of getting used to and developing a keen sense of spatial awareness and processing. But in stock form they are admitedly akward and the price range they came in was too close to the 4Runner with many similar features to really shine out on its own.

IFS is here to stay, those old school guys can complain all they want... but in a mainstream production vehicle there is little to no demand for a solid front axle vehicle in the regular population vs. enthusiasts like us; now I am purposefully excluding larger pick-ups (Is there a full sized pick-up that still comes with a true SFA?) and the Wrangler (Jeep built their name on the Wrangler and I doubt they're gong to drop out of their "niche" market) for obvious reasons.

Removable top is probably not going to happen, when was the last time we had a removable top vehicle? Most convertibles these days are automatic drop tops; I think maybe the MX-5's still have a manual option to keep costs down...

Point being, if you're complaining about essentially "out-dated" technology on a modern vehicle... ICON makes an amazingly well built FJ Cruiser for the die-hard... for a price.

I'd be sad to see the FJ Cruiser go, I think as a moddable platform (sort of how Scion markets their vehicles) its a great vehicle... but I'd be interested to see Toyota really flesh it out as an off-road centered vehicle and let it off its domesticated leash; they have the 4Runner as the "civil" 4X4... let the FJ Cruiser really be the wild child its supposed to be...

I wouldn't count on the FJ being discontinued in MY 2014...albeit a fairly convincing rumor. I like my FJ overall and its number 1 resale value status sure makes it easy to own.

ICONs are licensed, heavily modified versions of the FJ40 that use many of the same structural bits but have heavily modified (i.e. modern) suspensions, interiors, and drivetrains. You can get one made to semi old school spec, but it'll still be a GM truck underneath the Yota body.

50-60 for a hand built 40 repro seems fair, the astronomical prices TLC/ICON is charging are absurd. They're the same ones who feel that a crapped out 62 series with close to 240k miles on it is still worth 20 grand.

None of this really gets back to the point that the FJ Cruiser had nothing in common with the FJ40, except for stupid cartoonish retro styling that only began to look good when the thing was sporting a 3" lift, 37" tires, and enough trail armor to crash through a bank vault and emerge unscathed. In its stock form, sporting stock plastic running boards, drive-in crashing oversized roof rack, and mandatory body coordinated or "FJ Cruiser" tire mark spare cover it looked like one of those weird Bolivian hats you see all the ladies over there wearing (there's actually an interesting history behind those hats which kind of parallels the FJ Cruiser's design, but I digress).

You think it is a GM truck underneath? Dude, seriously?

It has a GM engine and transmission. That is it for the GM parts. Is the frame GM? No, it is a custom frame. Is the suspension GM? No, it is a custom suspension with remote reservoir shocks. Are the axles GM? No, they are Dana axles. Is the floorpan GM? No, it is custom-built.

As for the price, if you think you can get a hand-built, custom vehicle, built with with top of the line parts (heck, èven the knobs on the dash are machined from billet) for $60k then you are completely out of your mind. There is no plastic crap anywhere on an Icon.

It would be reasonable to say that you would rather buy a Wrangler Rubicon and put $20k into it. But to assert that you could build an Icon for $60k is flat-out BS.

If you simply bought all new stock parts for a FJ40- no upgrades like remote reservoir shocks - it would cost you more than $60k in parts, and you would still have to pay thousands for labor.

AEV makes the Brute DK for about 80-90k. You have to refab the entire body shell, stretch the frame, and add a bed. The suspension, driveshafts, tires, wheels, and interiors are also overhauled. You can even add a HEMI and still come in under 100k.

I'll take two of those over an ICON.
