And the FJ is now Dead

You think it is a GM truck underneath? Dude, seriously?

It has a GM engine and transmission. That is it for the GM parts. Is the frame GM? No, it is a custom frame. Is the suspension GM? No, it is a custom suspension with remote reservoir shocks. Are the axles GM? No, they are Dana axles. Is the floorpan GM? No, it is custom-built.

As for the price, if you think you can get a hand-built, custom vehicle, built with with top of the line parts (heck, èven the knobs on the dash are machined from billet) for $60k then you are completely out of your mind. There is no plastic crap anywhere on an Icon.

It would be reasonable to say that you would rather buy a Wrangler Rubicon and put $20k into it. But to assert that you could build an Icon for $60k is flat-out BS.

If you simply bought all new stock parts for a FJ40- no upgrades like remote reservoir shocks - it would cost you more than $60k in parts, and you would still have to pay thousands for labor.

Once you lose the inline 6 2F motor with the H42 (or H41 if you can find it) 4 speed that came with the later model FJ40's you lose a BIG part (or all) of what that truck was.

And you can buy and outfit a FJ40 that is just as nice if not nicer than the ICON for far less than $60K, I have done it twice and looking for a third project truck.

Back on the Topic at hand, the FJC never lived up to what it was supposed to be. It should, at the very least have a removable top. Perhaps with its supposed demise Toyota could bring back a bare bones mini truck type platform through Scion. I know they have a reputation for ricer type cars, but it would be a good place to start.

Right, the ICONs are built to resemble FJ40s, but share little else (if anything) besides body paneling and basic geometry.

I never did a complete tear down/build up resto of a 40, but came close with a 60 and spent less than 25 grand.

ICON FJ's are bad ass. Too bad they use an American V8 in there.

Would be much more cool if they used the Tundra 5.7 Toyota V8. I heard they had plans to use a Toyota V8 but somehow Toyota was giving them trouble.

If I had the money I would not get one due to the American drivetrain and engine. If they had a Toyota engine and drive train than I would definitely buy if I had the money!

Are you seriously so ignorant that you wouldn't buy a vehicle because it has this running gear? While the Toyota 5.7 is a great engine, the SBC is one of the best engines on earth.

Fuel injected 350HP/350TRQ Alloy V8
Five speed manual transmission
Atlas II part time transfer case with a crawl ratio of 87:1
Dynatrac/Dana 60/44 based axles

AEV makes the Brute DK for about 80-90k. You have to refab the entire body shell, stretch the frame, and add a bed. The suspension, driveshafts, tires, wheels, and interiors are also overhauled. You can even add a HEMI and still come in under 100k.

I'll take two of those over an ICON.

The Brute interior isn't anything like the ICON. It is all still plastic crap. The Brute body isn't aluminum. The fasteners on the Brute aren't all stainless steel, isolated from the aluminum body.

It is fine to prefer one over the other -- that's personal taste. But they really are still apples and oranges.

The Chevy small block is truly an outstanding engine. It is very compact for its output -- far more compact than overhead cam engines. GM makes a lot of crap, but the Chevy small block is an incredible engine.

The reason that they don't use the Toyota 5.7l V8 is that Toyota doesn't sell crate engines to the aftermarket. GM does.

It's also easier to build a stout and reliable Chevy small block than it is to try and get the iForce 5.7L retro'd into an older vehicles and have the plethora of sensors and modules playing nice together. I'm not a Chevy guy, but it's hard to argue with the simplicity, reliability, and versatility of the Chevy small block.

I am a Toyota guy, but the 5.7 smallblock in my boat is great. It is super easy to work on and extremely durable/reliable. Parts are really easy to find and are cheap too.

Shame Toyota doesn't sell crate 2UZ-FE, 1UR-FE, and/or 3UR-FE engines...

My understanding is that they actually use registered FJ40 Frames and reinforce/repair them so they can sell them as driven vehicles and avoid Smog regulations.

GM Smallblocks are actually really well built in terms of power output; I know some production vehicles have issues but usually it isn't the actual motor ... but in the aftermarket/modded applications they seem to do really well.

I'd rather have an engine that isn't gutless.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and to discuss this any further would be too far off topic, but...

Back on topic, hopefully the guys that brought us Trail Team editions of the FJ get shifted over to the 4Runner team. I'd be on a 4Runner trail team like the white or green FJs from a few years back like a fly on stink.

I agree with most the guy's on here. Toyota really dropped the ball with the FJ. Should have kept it closer to it's roots and offered a true entry level 4x4. Removable doors and top would have been great! Look at the wranglers. They really have not changed a whole lot. Still have a live axle removable doors and rag top and they sell like crazy. I also agree I will believe it when I see it. Rumor has been going on forever. With that being said the wife had one and we had a blast with it while owning it. It's not for everyone but would hate to see it go.

This is one ungrateful bunch. They gave us a new off road focused design with locker and a-trac and 4low during a period when other trucks were getting fitted with CV joints and losing the transfer case. Perfect, no, but fack.

My FJ was bad ass. I am trying to like this 4Runner but so far, if I had it to do over, I would have kept the FJ and just bought a mini van for the kids and dog.

Funny! You had an FJ that was "badass", so you traded for an SR5 with Navi and leather? Not even the TE? And now you're disappointed? Test drive?
