Android Head Unit?

I have been wanting to change out my head unit as well. I was looking at building a carpc run android but having difficulty getting all the things I want to run on it, on it. I know putting everything into system isn't always the best, but I want to streamline everything.

Offroad GPS
HAM radio
OBD2 connection and analysis
Bluetooth
steering wheel control
camera interfaces (rear back up and front skid plate)

Then I saw Insane audio (4wheel parts) now makes a head unit with some of those options.

Still looking at building my own, just the cost is a bit pricey.

I don't want to be this guy

Dang that alpine Halo9 is nice and huge lol! I have a aftermarket dash but no unit yet. I may have to drop some $$$ on this unit and try it out. I'm assuming for GPS it would go off my phone (android auto).

Hey all, just picked up a '16 on Friday, took an 8 hour trip yesterday, was irritated with the stock HU the entire time. Found out this morning that they don't make the Tesla Style HU for it yet.

Here is a picture I got from Alpine when I reached out to them directly.

Was it anyone here who did it? If so, did you do the install yourself. I'm thinking of doing the install myself.

Alpine Halo9 Toyota 4runner ILX-F309FRN

Looks like its just something they have on their site. Not quite a restyle unit but I guess its less for them to do this than make a complete restyle. It looks like a metra kit, with the Halo9 unit, plus the Maestro iDatalink setup (200-300). In reality they're just selling you something you might be able to piece together. Someone here does have a Halo9 unit though.

Maybe they CLO T4R can chime in.

Definitely something you can just piece together and install yourself. I spent less than 1k for everything. Check out Upgrade 2018 Support Carplay thread for my latest post.

I recommend getting the antenna adapter if your year supports it or use the gps antenna that came with the headunit. In case you're in an area that doesn't have cell service, your headunit will use the 4runner GPS or headunit GPS antenna to try and figure out your location.

Xtrons te706 looks to be good. I was considering it for my 2013 Mustang. There’s a company in Europe that replaces the Chinese chips so you get the sound quality of major brands like Pioneer or Kenwood. Below is the discussion - is a long read.

XTRONS TE706PL Android 8.0 4GB RAM maybe goo… | Android Auto

I installed the xtrons unit a couple of months ago. Overall, it's better than my previous Android head unit, but not perfect. There's some noise from my cellular modem, so they've definitely cheaped out on shielding, and none of my USB devices work after it sleeps (but I was able to set the auto shutdown to 30 seconds so now it just does a full boot every time I get in - still only ~20 seconds). There's a 3rd party firmware floating around that I might try out.

On that note, what I had before was this one - if anyone is interested in it shoot me a PM. It's already wired up for a 5th gen, with a steering wheel adapter etc. The hardware is a bit dated, but it works fine.

Why not contact someone like SOUNDMAN and see if they can do a dash panel with a tablet in it. They have done hundreds of vehicles with ipads and android tablets.
I personally wouldn't touch the dash of the 4runner, but I want it to stay stock. I used to install aftermarket radios and do lots of upgrades, but after years I realized that I want it to stay stock. When I look around the cars out there, they are all equipped with high tech modules and parts. The simple old school is becoming unique now and this is why I like it.

Was finally able to have Phionex create a request page. Per their latest email:
---
We need to do further market research. If there will be at least 200 customers request then we will make one. This is the request page
Product requests – Phoenix Android Radios
---

I already submitted my request... the '03-09 4Runner is already and option but not the Gen5... So I had to type in my '16 SR5

I tried to make this into a new thread so everyone would click and submit their year, but apparently i'm too much of a noob here and don't have permission to do that yet.
So feel free to make a new thread so we can get some big submissions. I've had this android unit in my CTS for 8 months and it's still working perfectly, can't wait for the new 4runner design.

I submitted for 2010-2019 Toyota 4Runner

I think this may warrant a new thread -- and blasted on other social media

Thanks for sharing this, diodia. I reached out to Phoenix to see if they had this in the works since it isn't listed on their website. Here's their reply:

Hi Sultankhan84,

We are not working on the 4Runners right now. But if we got more customer that requires this unit, we will put it on schedule.
You could follow our Facebook for the new product update.

Thank you.

We need to generate some interest to get them motivated to post this unit on their site. If you're interested in this solution, reach out to them and get them motivated!

sultank84, look up 4 posts. Enter your info on that link I provided.

I still can not create a post on this forum just to provide that link, if you're able to do so and also send over the link to other 4runner folks you know... that would help speed it along.

I've also been in contact with the ACTUAL manufacturer, no, Phionex is not the manufacturer. Phionex is just a dealer and passes along information to the manu. The manu is still awaiting more responses from people to get the 4Runner going.

did you able to get TPMS in Torque app?
thanks

Hello friends,
After doing tons of research and finally deciding on a head unit I went with the 7” Xtrons TE706PL. It features an 8-core CPU, 4GB memory, and 32GB onboard storage (no optical disk drive). I wanted something with bang-for-buck quality and strong community support without paying $500+ for a head unit that will eventually lose support. Here are the parts I used for this build:

1. Xtrons TE706PL Android 8.0 head unit.

2. Panlong OBD2 bluetooth diagnostic scanner
http://a.co/eAcaB9Q
3. CRUX SWRTY-61N stereo harness
404 Not Found – Caraudio Closeout
4. Scosche TA2106B dash kit

5. 2.4Ghz SMA connector WiFi antenna

6. BATIGE 2 port dual USB 3.0 flush mount extension
http://a.co/cTs4ckz
7. Buffalo iBuffalo Classic USB gamepad

Xtrons Head Unit:

This head unit is very fast as the initial cold boot is ~30 seconds but every time after, it loads ~2 seconds when you turn on the vehicle. It features built-in WiFi (2.4Ghz), Bluetooth, 3 USB 2.0 ports, 1 MicroSD slot, and GPS which made it pretty versatile. I prewired everything prior to fully mounting to test in the 4Runner and was blown away by the performance. I installed the apps I typically run for media, GPS, etc. and they run without issues. I use my hotspot from my mobile phone and it's like a computer in the dash. There are too many features to list but in short, it is pretty much an Android tablet mated to a sound processor. With full Google Play Store support, you can install whatever apps work best for you. VLC, Waze, Spotify, Pandora, Chrome, Google Assistant, YouTube, Torque, Prime Video, Netflix, Arlo are among the apps I use most. Lastly, I wanted to comment on the resolution of this screen. It is 1024x600 and looks really good compared to other 7” units by Pioneer or Kenwood as these usually are 800x480.

Note: This head unit is just slightly bigger than most double dins and does not slide through the dash kit. It is sitting flush up against the rear of the bezel. I used 1000 grit to lightly sand the rear mating surface of the bezel smooth prior to install.

Panlong OBD2 Scanner:

This scanner is installed under the steering wheel of the car in the diagnostic port and pairs to your head unit. I installed the Torque app and it detected it quickly and works well. I have read somewhere that the transmission temp can be added as well which would make it great to monitor when hauling. There is a separate kit for TPMS which includes the control unit and sensors but I did not order it.

Note: You need to go to the bluetooth settings in "Settings" to pair this device.

CRUX Stereo Harness:

This was an easy install with the CRUX harness. Inside of the kit you should have an adapter for the steering wheel controls. It uses a 3 cable harness for key1, key2, and ground. On the steering wheel control module I used the pin settings for a “BOSS” head unit for compatibility.

Note: You are only able to retain 6 buttons for the steering wheel control; however, you get to program each button with dual use for short press and long press giving you more options and flexibility.

With the CRUX head unit harness kit I was able to retain the USB and aux input ports, and reverse backup camera. I didn’t need the mic as the head unit has a built in mic that works well. I didn’t use the GPS retention as the head unit came with a GPS antenna.

GPS and WiFi Antenna:

I ordered a separate WiFi antenna so that it can be mounted under the dash. I wanted to get as much range as possible. The WiFi antenna that came with the head unit is small and mounted to the rear. The SMA connector made it easy to swap this out. Both the GPS and WiFi antenna (upgraded one) have double sided tape which are mounted in the following places: For GPS, I taped this under the dash on the left side of the center AC vents. For the WiFi, I taped this under the dash on the right side of the center AC vents.

BATIGE USB Extension:

I wanted a clean install of the USB ports so I bought this flush mount kit and installed it inside of the glovebox at the factory “round” slot. The slot pops out and I had to use a tree bit to bore the hole slightly to fit the USB extension.

Overall, I am very happy with the head unit and please do the research before going this route. It is not for everyone and can take some time to tweak and set up but I enjoy geeking on this stuff. I haven’t even entered the realm of USB controllers and emulators yet. There are options for a front camera and DVR which I will do sometime in the future.

UPDATE: Picked up 2 Buffalo Classic USB controllers that pair great with Snes9x EX+ (Play Store Download). Setting key input for each controller was a breeze and now able to play 2-player games. The setup as it stands I have 1 USB port for 256gb USB flash drive, 1 USB Port - USB controller, 1 USB Port - USB controller.

UPDATE: Some people experienced sound quality problems with Bluetooth which the firmware and os updates resolve.

I don't think Torque supports TPMS on any device.

For anyone considering getting the Xtrons TE706PL - I'm still quite happy with it. One thing I did recently was open it up and cut the internal mic wire (red/black wrapped together going through the front panel). It's increased the external mic quality immensely. Also, I'm pretty sure the external mic input has bias voltage applied, because I'm using a mic from an Olympus recorder that claims to do noise cancelling, and it seems to be working.

I have Xtrons TE706PL and happy for now ( have it installed only for few weeks)
I added DVR recorder USB ( they have Analog one, but I can't make it work, it shows video on a screen, I selected storage, but nothing get recorded)
and I added 360 bird view with 4 cameras
so far so good
missing only TPMS ( I bought both versions internal and external from Xtrons, both came with 3 sensors working and 1 is not).
so look like scangauge is only option?
