Android HU and some other stereo related Questions

Anyone running one of these android HU and what has your experience been. I'm planning some creature comfort upgrades and a stereo is on the list. I'm out of the audiophile game but I do enjoy a good sounding stereo. Something that does as well if not a little better than the current stock options would do fine. My speakers are on the fritz and some days I have stereo sound and some days I don't. Now that I drive about an hour back and forth to work a working stereo that sounds nice is farther up on the want list than it was.

I have always run my power wire for an amplifier through the interior but after what I've learned with wiring over the years I'm thinking of running the power wire under the cab and then through the floor with a grommet in the cargo area. I figure welding wire would hold up to the weather a little more than stereo power wire and it would also keep the power wire from interfering with the signal wires that do stay in the cab.

Planned stereo is an Atoto Android HU. I'll run a backup camera and everything off of it. I haven't seen anything too special that I have to do in order to have everything running right and the features seem pretty nice. I'm just after something that boots pretty quickly, can give me mpg readouts, and make the hands free experience while I'm on the phone somewhat nicer than an earpiece.

Speakers will likely be CDT classic components for the front and some 6.5 shallow midbass speakers in the rear doors with a Dayton HO 12" DVC in the way back (I'm going to try and fiberglass that storage area and utilize that for the box. From the specs I only need .5 cuft for a sealed box and I'm pretty sure I can make that work. I'm going with a 5 channel Digital amplifier to power everything. NVX has a pretty tempting offer with a 100x4 + 500x1 rms for under 400.

Also I will be rolling out some closed cell on the floors and in the doors on top of the panels that are already in place to give more of a luxury feel to the old runner.

I've done some looking around the forum and there have been some great builds but I am not doing anything spectacular, just some noise and silencing along with added features present in newer vehicles I want to add to my jalopy.

I can't comment on the head unit. If you go with some foam or sound deadening do two layers in the cargo area, that's where the majority of the road noise is from. The owner of Raamat shared his experience in sound proofing one of our 4Runners years ago and said it was badly needed.

Works fine. Took a month to deliver. I really wanted android so I could run TorquePro but it can't connect to my bluetooth obd2 device.

One of the reasons I picked the one above is because it works with torque pro and there are two bt chips in it which would be nice for items like an obdii and a smartphone. It looks pretty nice though. I just never considered the idea of an android powered hu

When you pull the door panels to install the speakers tap on the sheet metal. I'll bet your opinion changes. I used butyl and closed cell everywhere but the lid in my rig.

I also have my sub mounted in the rear cargo compartment. I didn't do anything other then sound deaden it. The bass it produces is plenty.

The doors help and you'll be in there anyway with replacing the speakers. Also replace the driver's side door seal, that one helps too (the rubber trim piece that gets torn up over time).

I only did doors and cargo area and it made a huge difference. The firewall is pretty hard to do since in order to do the whole thing you have to pull a ton of stuff, so I only did near the footwells.

I've already got 36sqft (maybe more, I did it a while ago) of 80mm AlphaDamp (now out of business) plastered all over the rig. It's in the doors, roof, all over the floor, rear door. I'm adding the sheets of open cell on top of it in between the carpet and the tiles. I'm not sure how I'd really attach it on the door panels since it's quality in sound dampening is not to solidify the metal panels but just to slow down the air waves coming into the cab. I'll consider it though. Maybe I can hang it from the top of the door. I just don't want anything getting in the way of the windows rolling down.

[MENTION=83502]Kryptoroxx[/MENTION] Although I can't specifically comment on the Atoto, I dealt with a Boss HU for a couple months before I got sick of the poor audio quality and lack of features like a basic equalizer. I can't say enough good things about the Kenwood DDX990 series. I have the 2S, an older model, but I have seen the 3S as well go for under $200 on ebay.

These are the things that totally modernized my third gen:

-Tilting screen to solve the low HU location on our 3rd gens
-Apple Car Play/ Android Auto -- allows for use of Google Maps, so integrated 7" nav!
-Multiple band EQ with built in amp (I don't run an external amp)
-Backup camera capable (would-recommend installing)

Also, I'd install new fronts, see how it sounds, and then consider doing the rears later. IMO, the stock rears are sufficient paired with a nice set of 6.5 Components in front. For an extra $100, you might want to look at an underseat sub too, really rounds out the system for me.

I am actually running the Pumpkin 7 inch HU in my 01 Sport. Connects flawlessly to my bluetooth dongle for Torque and has all the creature comforts possible. Navi, Spotify, Youtube, Stitcher, and other apps.
I would recommend adding a 4/5 channel amp though. They arent that powerful, but Im also an audiophile and love my music loud.

The first unit suffered from a broken solder joint that disabled the screen, but the unit still worked otherwise. I plan to repair it as this model/android version worked well. I've had 2x units since and both have been buggy, but do the job for a budget head unit. Torque works great with the ELM327 adapter. I have not hooked up any cameras yet, but i do have them for the dash & rear. Sound is decent without an amp using the stock speakers. I have some JBLs (Stage 502 rear & 600c front) ready to go in this spring when I do some sound deadening.

Well that's the one that's in the worst shape and I know my rear hatch needs it too. Theres a couple grand worth of parts I'm doing when it gets warmer. Suspension is going to need new bushings at least, upgrading the rear springs, adding an aux fuel tank (maybe, playing with ideas right now), stereo is needing updating, rear camera, new dash cam, new windshield, new seatbelts, carpet needs to be pulled and cleaned again, new seats in the front (hopefully with warmers lol), and I'm going to try and figure out why my console lights are out.

Lots of work to be done. Should keep me busy for a while.

Cool....looks pretty nice. I just looked at a few places on the interwebs.....not a lot of reviews out there on these things but I figured someone here ran one.

It does. I haven't paid attention to car audio in 10 years. A lot has changed. It seems Boss has not though. Sorry to hear about your experience with them.

I've been an audio enthusiast since I got my license lol. I used to run a pioneer 99s with enough power to stop my wipers but now I'm just looking to do a single 12 setup and around 400 to 500 watts behind it. I'm either going to mount it in the rear tool storage area or in the rear console when I put captains chairs in there. I have some sitting that should work out really well and I think I might have enough space to do a downward firing sealed box. I gotta get out the tape measure and figure everything out. Fronts will definitely be a component set. The rear speakers will be a midbass/fill. That's all that location is good for imaging wise.

I might run by Best Buy and see if they have the pioneer android units. I'm not looking to spend a lot but if it's a fairly seamless system then I might spring for it.
