Another 4 Wheel Drive Question

No limit really, Just shift to and from below ~40mph.

On a side note - A few days ago I tried to shift out of 4Hi from about 40mph it took more than 10 seconds to disengage and when it did there's a light thud almost like hitting a pothole (I know there's no pothole there). Potential problems?

I engaged 4H for the first time when we had freezing rain and some potential black ice. Put it in 4H before I pulled out of the spot in the parking lot I was in and I could have sworn the whole drive train skipped when I straightened out and drove away.

That must have been the binding you guys are talking about. Having never used part time 4-wheel drive, I was squirrely about shifting while the vehicle was in motion.

Anyway, this thread was very educational (and entertaining). Thanks guys!

My thoughts exactly, do you have to engage and disengage like you're almost driving a manual vehicle?

Definitely didn't want to start arguments lol, just wanted to have an understanding from experienced off-roaders about 4WD. I'm probably going to end up being a road queen anyway as I continue to tell myself I need to get out on some trails. Not as easy with a family and limited access to trails.

I also live in Northern Virginia and I feel your pain about there being few places to really go offroad. I recommend planning a weekend to visit Rausch Creek Off Road Park in PA. It's a 3 hour drive away, but they offer some outstanding 101 courses for you to familiarize yourself with your vehicle and how it interacts with the trail (from what I hear). So that's my recommendation, sign up for a 101 course through an off road park. Rausch Creek has tons of youtube videos of the 101 course so you can get an idea of what it's like.

Interesting thread. I've had my 4Runner for nearly 7 weeks and didn't know to exercise the H4H and H4L yet.

Have only tried changing the settings while idling in N in the garage, nearly silent transition from H4F to H4L, but a hearty mechanical sound going from H4L to L4L and back.

Some good reading and now I'm going to look for some off-pavement opportunities. Did about 10 miles on a forestry road to the Samish Overlook in Larrabee State Park a few weeks ago, would have been an exercise opportunity.
