Another 5 Volt Console Mod

Hopefully not too obvious, but here's another option to add 5-volt power to the center console.

(1) get a low-profile USB 12-volt charger -- mine was 10 bucks at Frys for a 2-slot charger

(2) Disassemble the 12-volt cigarette lighter and remove the flip-cover. Search the forum to see how to remove the center console where the 12-volt lighter is.

(3) Re-assemble the 12-volt cig lighter and plug in the USB charger.

Since you've taken off the flip-cover and since the usb-charger is low profile, the console door will now close completely and hide your new mod. You can also remove the USB charger in case you need to the 12-volt socket. Piece of cake--the hardest part is removing the flip cover on the 12-volt socket.

i dont understand how this is different than buying a low profile USB charger and plugging it into the cig lighter?

Do the later models have that flip door that would preclude you from closing the door? maybe mine just doesn't have that at all

On mine, the charger has a little flip lid on the chargher itself then the actual lid for the whole tray over that.. Thats the reason I did the GShadow charger mod on the doors :bigok:

I just use a low profile and it allows the flap to shut plenty to use the larger door. No need for extra modding.

You could always mount it all underneath and use a short USB cable. This one is done with the USB Cable from the Nav Unit. I apologize for the uncleanliness. Shes getting new Bilstein 5100's and a bath tomorrow.
