Another crashed 4Runner

So Feb 11th last month my '13 Limited was hit at an angled T-bone when a corrections officer ran a red light at an intersection. My truck spun around 180 degrees and then the rear end hit a metal utility box on the other side of the intersection. Which caused damage all along the whole drivers side of the vehicle. I guess he was on his way to work at a prison...

He hit me and then hit a 3rd car in the intersection. I had a witness who approached and said she saw what he did but she had to go to work, and I was a bit dazed from the side airbag going off and wasn't able to get her contact number before she left.

So the corrections officer lied to the police and said he had the green light, and I told my story. The police didn't find paint transfer from the third car on my car however, so I think that might have helped my case.

No tickets were issued by the police.

So the initial estimate was $ 18,500 of damage, I was hoping it was going to be totaled but it needed another $7000 of damage to total it I think they said.

So 7 weeks later I get a call from the insurance company...and they totaled it. After the body shop started getting it apart they found more damage....and I was actually happy about it.

I wasn't happy it took 7 weeks, luckily I've been driving a relatives car and didn't have to be in a rental all this time or I would have been screwed.

The good news was his insurance company was found at fault and I got a decent settlement.

The bad news is there isn't many limiteds without the third row in my region, so I might be driving the relatives car a while longer before I find another 4Runner....

Sorry about your 4Runner! The important thing is that the truck did its job and you weren't injured, or worse. Good luck in the search for a replacement, I'm sure you will locate one soon!

Glad you're ok. Looks like your Runner did an admirable job given the circumstances. Sucks to see a runner off the road but nice to know they are as tough as they are.

Well that sucks. I'm glad you came out of it ok. I hate it when a paid government official refuses to admit to the truth and goes into CYA mode. At least the investigators were apparently able to figure out what happened.

Glad your okay. -it's not just government officials not owning what they did, it has become the norm of society not to take responsibility for their actions.

Upgrade to a TE or expand your search if you dead set on the limited-

First off , glad your ok. Second you make a great example why all cars should have cameras. And I'm going to get one installed. I was hit hard by a drunk driver in a weird intersection and I wish I had a camera then. Get yourself a nice new 4Runner, fly and drive if you have too.

Totally agree with cameras and glad your ok.

I would think most people would make sure your ok and stay until police arrive. Shoot if see an accident happen I would call my boss (school principal) and be like hey I'm saving someone life potentially I'll be late to work. And if they fire me over that, it's probably not worth being at that job anyways. Glad your ok and you can always get a third row 4Runner shipped to you. I know my yota dealer would go out of their way to help someone in you circumstance

Thanks guys :)

I had a '12 SR5 and while it was good in the snow, I traded it for the Limited as the center differential really comes in handy up in Western New York winters with the road conditions here.

A co-worker has a Trail and I loved it, we pulled into a parking lot one day and put it in 4low and activated the locker and different ATRAC modes, I just wouldn't put the features to use as my "offroading" is winter driving. :)

For whatever reason the only Limiteds around here at the moment have the 3rd row and I'm not a fan...I like having the maximum cargo space for utility.

crunchcity So glad to hear you're ok. Over the few years I've been on here, this is not the first serious accident in which the 4R has protected its owners.

As I read this, "camera" was exactly my thought too. GL with the replacement.

i see snow in the picture. For sure get a Limited for the AWD. Part time 4 Wheel drive in these sucks in snow sucks on tight turns. Reminds me of on my old Scout. Im just waiting for the new body style hopefully with Pr tailgate and AWD to upgrade the SR5 personal mistake I made. Snows almost over so Ill stop complaining soon. By the way my wife who doesnt care about money wanted the Limited all along but I cheaped out.

Hold out for another Limited. You won't be happy in the long run if you can't find one quick and then just pull the trigger on a different model.

I admit we don't have the snow in my area that you have in yours, but I haven't found the 4WD to be sucky in snow at all.

Tight turns like parallel parking or getting in and out of my garage etc. You can say its not a big deal but its not every day I drop 40k including tax on a car so yea Im pissed that it isnt serving my needs as expected. My bad and I feel the salesman's bad for not telling me about this since he owns one. The whole thing makes me feel stupid and I dont like that. And no I dont want a friggin Subaru. Yes Im also glad you were not hurt.

Too true nowadays. But I had a city cop do the same CYA thing to me over 20 yards ago after he negligently caused an accident I was involved in. But he waited until I was stationed 15,000 miles away in Japan to perjure himself. And my lawyer didn't have the fortitude to fight for it. So it burns me more when people we pay and give our public trust do it. And don't even get me started about what goes on inside the DC beltway!!! LOL

First of all, OP, glad you are ok. That guy is a scumbag! Hope you get back into the LE you want soon.

I'm really confused and why is it his fault? I mean, what is there to tell? If the conditions are slippery just engage 4WD and you are good to go???

Its by no means the salesman's total fault. But he's the expert in helping us understand the vehicles and we were going back and forth on the Limited and the SR5 discussing the differences. He never pointed this one out or I would have bought the limited, even more commission for him. Soon after we bought it my wife left for a 6k mile trip south and it didn't snow soon after she returned. Hence we didn't lock it in till many miles on the truck or I would have taken it back for the Limited. Now a trade is cost prohibitive so Ill get a newer one down the line, maybe even the new Lexus if I like it. You are not good to go, you have to park and do hard turns like in and out of my garage etc. in snow and ice. The issue has come up daily in snowy conditions. I dont like it and my wife is appalled every time it happens. I should stop beating this dead horse and just shut up and upgrade in a couple. Needless to say this wont be a long term vehicle in our fleet. It isn't life shattering.
