Another Duratrac Thread

I am going to need new tires by early spring and I am starting to look at my options. I really like the reviews I see on the Duratracs, but I was curious if I will get a good 40,000 miles out of them. I am not one to take a tire down to the wear bars; I believe in having good tread under my truck.

I am not a heavy off-road guy, but the truck does see its fair share of unimproved roads and trails. Just curious what you guys have experienced with the Duratracs under your 5th Gen.

I am looking at the 265-70-17 E.

Some folks have reported that the Duratracs wear fast. I recently bought BFG KMs, mainly because I got a good deal. I was seriously looking at the Duratracs, and believe that if you rotate and balance them regularly that you'd see at least 25K. They have NO tread life warranty that I know of.

Good tread left here after more than 37,000 miles. I drive a mix of dirt country roads, paved highways, and trails. They're great on our unplowed snow-covered roads. I'll buy them again.

Same story here, except most of my miles are highway. They have plenty of tread left, more than most AT tires come with brand new. They are a little pricey, but so far I have not been disappointed.

I have load C, and the only thing I can complain about was the excess wheel weight required to balance. (Drives like a dream, even with the extra wheel weights)

I am looking for a slightly more aggressive tire to replace my Firestone Destinations, the Toyo a/t II do not look much different than my Destinations.
What makes them a better tire than the Duratracs?

i have about 26k on mine (265/70-17 E-load). have rotated them ~5k-ish since new. they've remained well balanced so far. zero complaints. i'd buy them again but consider other tires simply for the "something different" factor.
 
20K on mine (miles) about 35% worn. You should get 40 no problem.

Great compromise tire with good road manners and very capeable offroad. There isn't a lot of direct competition for this tire. Most people who trash it are recommending something a lot less aggressive.

the BFG A/T is also a great tire with similar abilities but they aren't snow rated so I don't get the insurance help from them, that was the deciding factor for me.

I'll buy them again unless I go with the BFG's to try something different.
 
I got only 19K miles on mine C load Duratracs - they're still doing well. Looking on the wear I expect another 20K on them and then we'll see how much tread is left.
 
For your application I would recommend a lower load rating. A "C" still has a higher capacity than the P series tires that came on your vehicle. You will probably run 3-5psi more than the stock tires (an LT tire requires a higher psi than a P series tire to carry the same load). If you run a C, D or E rating tire, you will want to run the same pressure. A C will ride softer than an E but firmer than the P series. I have run C rated tires for ever on my 3rd gen. I haul, tow and rock crawl high rated trails. I have never had an issue. Some of the larger size tires will only come in higher load ratings.
 
I just did a Google image search (Duratrac sidewall) and I was surprised to see the large amount of cut and damaged sidewalls on the Duratracs. I know a lot of members here run them and I have not seen any posts about this problem.
Is this a legit problem with this tire? The sidewall looks thin in some of the posted damaged photos.

I really like the looks of this tire and it appears to get good reviews.
 
I split a C range 267/70/17 Duratrac wide open. I also taco'd the rim, bent upper and lower control arms, steering rack, and a bunch of other stuff in the process.

Thats sucks! Do you mind sharing the details on this?
I only do the occasional light trail, but I also tow a camper and that is my main concern.

If you only do light trails, why even get a tire like the Duratrac, especially in an "E" range? You will lose some mpg because of heavier tire.

Cresting a hill, couldn't see a 5 foot deep hole that was washed out, going like 20mph. Any passenger or LT tire would have split in my case.

Had my 4runner with the duratracs for three weeks and have been out of town a lot of that time with the 4R tucked away safely in the garage. I'll likely be using it a lot when I get back and was wondering what a good recommended all around air pressure would be? My serious 4x4ing days are behind me, but I will still be off roading a lot, just highway to my fav fishing hole and other choice out of the way places via rough dirt back country roads with snow usually. Some steep climbs also. I'm not really into adjusting air pressure if it can be avoided for various road types. Just a good all around pressure to maintain for optimum tire wear over comfort. I used to keep my tacoma's BFG's all weather shoes at max of 35psi. Would max pressure for maximum longevity still hold true for the duratracs? What's everyone think?
 
Thanks scanny, my usual method over the years has been to go a couple pounds under the max psi rating stamped on the tire. Never had issues that I am aware of. Just wondering what everyone else was doing.
