Another MPG SOB story

So you guys just wanted another "what's your mpg thread?" Really?

OP and anyone else who like me enjoys efficiency, no matter what the baseline is, take note:
If you want to be efficient the absolutely worst and silliest thing you can do is lift, bigger tires, roof rack and add bumpers and skids. You can't beat the basic laws of physics guys. Add unsprung weight? Pay a penalty every time you accelerate which is a lot in the city. On the highway those tires don't hurt as much as the lift and added mass.

Keep it stock and be efficient or mod it up and be quiet. Your choice.

BTW I will merge this in with one of the dozen or so other threads like this when I get a chance.

All the merging may be harming the site.

While building up my new 4 month old 4Runner I've noticed information on building it is few and far between. I only found a minuscule amount of information from this forum while the Tacoma forum (when I had my Tacoma) was fulllll of information. Maybe it's also because they sell a lot less 4runners and buyers are different so less documentation.

You should let a quite a bit repeat threads slide here. I like to read current posts also with posts from 2011.

you would cry if you saw mine ... 13.5mpg on the freeway to Carson and 11mpg on the side streets. And I'm in Riverside but I'm more towards La Sierra area.

Umpf, that milage hurts! I'm right on Mt. Rubidoux, I'll start looking for you around town.

I'm down to 12.5 combined with the recent addition of my roof rack and rack assesories. I was at 13.5 combined and 18 highway before the recent rack addition. Hardly drive the thing as its for trips but soon I'll be able to see where it's at as it sits.

I find it hard to believe that you are doing something to your 4Runner that has not been documented in this forum dozens of times. Care to elaborate?

I have merged exactly three threads in the past few months. That's "all the merging?"

When a thread is merged, it keeps the content of the current thread and joins it with an existing thread. All that does is keep the clutter down.

I call bullshit ... I've been topping off since back in late 90's. And Ive never had a evap light come on.

how you explain going 40miles pass the light and filling up and topping off to get 20 gallons in my 22gallon tank in 4runner or 21gallons in my wifes 23 gallon tanked Sienna or 11.5 gallons topped off on my 2013 Scion FRS 13gallon tank.

From my experience what you have stated isnt true.

I'm just going to leave this here....

Every single add on. Part numbers/specs/reviews/installs. Even took me a few days of slider research to realize my local guy pelfrey had full frame plate bolt on sliders. Just did my interior lights to led. Same thing . Used YouTube to figure out quality, part numbers, tool and how to access the lights.

These two are just a sample of dozens, if not hundreds, of thread on these two subjects here.

yeah obviously dont understand how to top off ... You dont keep the nozzle in while topping off. I been doing this forever to all my vehicles Ive owned.

The article says bad emissions. My wife's Sienna which we've own since 2006 passes emission testing every year.

As for EPA standards and regulations. I work in a oil refinery; making gasoline for 18yrs... SHIT!!!; We dont even have to report it if its less than a drum of liquid. The little table spool of hydrocarbon that hits the ground and evaporates aint going to have EPA jump me...

I forgot to add ... I'm semi armored up ... I have skids for my transfer case and gas tank and have a full roof rack. Which possibly contribute to this.

I've actually been pleasantly surprised with my mileage. The average on the onboard computer hovers right around 18.5 almost all the time.

My last car was a '14 328 wagon and doing the same driving I do now, I hovered around 24 - with a turbo 4 cyl.

My other car is a '11 E-350 that hovers around 13.5 (but we're hauling 5 kids on tons of road trips).

So even if I dip to 17'ish - I'm cool. It's a truck!

No, I do understand so please don't insult my intelligence. I also understand that a few extra miles of range isn't worth a couple grand in repairs. If you want to roll the dice then by all means, knock yourself out.

It's been discussed before by our FJ brethren.

Gamble on, gamblers!

Holy-moly, this is disappointing. I've had as high as 22.5 MPG on long trips (and 20 MPG post lift/tires) but, around town I'm getting crap mileage. I've had as low as 11.97 MPG calculated for tire diameter. Granted I live and work downtown with a lot of starts and stops but, dayum - this is the reason I didn't buy a Raptor (among others).

I think somebody else mentioned it, but 22.5 highway is a little higher than what I've seen. I think that traffic idling and start/stop cycles are what's hurting your mileage. Not much short of a riding a bicycle while eating bean burritos will increase gas mileage in that environment.

True. Actually, I should be riding my bike to work as it's only three miles. I actually, did get 22.5 (reported on dash) when I drove the truck new up the 395 to Mono Lake and back. It was literally, 99.5% highway miles and I was using hyper mileage techniques, I used to use in my Prius. It was more a test than anything because I prefer to drive like a bat out of hell.

I usually get 12-13mpg, with mostly city driving and worse in winter conditions. Nowhere near the advertised fuel economy.

Currently on a road trip to florida and getting 20-22 mpg with vast majority highway miles. Better but still worse that advertised...

Funny. I could swear my window sticker only claimed 21 highway? Which mine only even flirts with at 55mph on dead level roads. Preferably with a tailwind.

I get 13 on average combined city and freeway driving.

My Tundra with the 5.7 motor and T U R D supercharger gets 12.5 mpg, but it puts out over 500hp and 550 pounds of torque.

Given that the former is a slug the latter is a rocket the mileage for TE is piss poor but it is what it is. No idea how some of these guys get their mileage numbers they must drive with a egg under their gas pedal.
