When I was stock I could get above the window sticker if I was gentle with it on the highways. Those days are so long gone now... have been getting 16 with the RTT on, generally still get 18 unloaded though in mixed driving.

It's rated for 21 mpg highway stock. Your vehicle doesn't appear to be stock though...
I'm also happy with mine. I drove about 140 miles yesterday, with 6 people, a dog, and all our stuff and I got 22.4 mpg going and 21.4 on the way back.
And my 4runner is lifted and on 275 BFGs.
I'm very happy with that, especially since my built Xterra never saw north of 15mpg.

FWIW, I just completed a 600 mile trip, all highway. I am all stock except for AT tires. Cruising speed varied between 60 and 75 mph with a lot of elevation change. Filled up twice and could check gas mileage. I got 21.8 and 21.9 mpgs, checked by the electronic dash display and by calculating myself. Very happy with those numbers. Around town I have been getting 17.
Also, the in-dash readout was within .1 of my own calculations. I have never had a vehicle calculate it that accurately. Very cool.

I agree. It's easy to get high mileage on highway. Even after my lift, I still can get 20 mpg on a long trip if I drive purposefully. If I'm excited to get out of town, forget about it but, I still can pull 18 mpg. It's around downtown that killing me.

Interesting thread, thanks for posting.
I think he was referring to the previous link you mentioned where it was the typical BS about your gas going back into the station's tank when it clicks off. It's easy to avoid clicks and spills if you know what you're doing.
Like others I top off frequently and have never had a problem in my life. However that FJ thread is interesting so perhaps on these vehicles we should avoid filling to the neck. :bigok:
I think I need to just get a Raptor so I can enjoy a 36 gallon tank. It's a shame Toyota doesn't see fit to offer the big tanks here in the USA, i believe the Prado offers 150L.

I was getting 15.2 on 35psi. Went to 42 and after 1k of same mileage (80% highway) I'm at 17.4. I have 2.5" lift, 275s, gobi rack. Same driving habits...

Might be ok around town, but I wouldn't do that in the wilds of Nevada. WAY too far between gas stations, and not the best place to run out of gas.

I traded in May, in my 14 Grand Cherokee Summit HEMI for my 16 Trail. I can do anything and I'll still get better gas mileage in my 4R. But I do miss the vroom- a little bit. Our Florida road trips gas mileage are so nice[emoji1417] even with 275 AT's and a lead foot driver(me)

Seriously? 2 People no gear and we don't get better than 17 no matter how hard I try. People getting over 20 I do not comprehend.
265/70/17 - C load index 112 running at 40+/-1 psig = 18.2 commuting (can eek out maybe high 18s low 19s at 70 mph)
With stock tires, no lift, no armor, cruising at 70 on flat lands you should be able to get 20+ mpg. And to be fair your sig states "Billy 5100's, front set on 3rd ring, SAW 1.5" rear springs. Duractrac 265/70 R17's. 1.25" Spidertrax Spacers. Schrockworks custom treaded Sliders, RCI Full Aluminum Skids Front to rear, Smittybilt RTT, 2.2M Awning, 2.2M Equipt K9 Rack, Roadshower 2.0, custom drawers with Stove and storage" With the lift, tires, armor, RTT, awning, and other gear you're packing, I would be shocked to get near 15 mpg cruising on the freeway.
hmm, i cant seem to get better then 14.6, all city driving, using eco mode as much as possible. no jack rabbit starts, and obeying speed limits.

Haha True, but before I did anything to it i was only getting 17. I'm down the 16 now with all that stuff. Oh well. I just drive it and dont sweat it. I just get curious when I see people getting 21, no idea how.

Just bought ours two weeks ago... and assumed the dealer would have the PSI correct.
After averaging 17.5mpg on a 1600 mile trip... I decided to look at the tire pressures. They were all at 26-28psi.
The 275/55-20 Nitto Terra Grapplers can run at 50psi... so that's where they are now.
Jury still out on MPG... but it's GOT to be a significant improvement. I'll give up the mushy ride for better mileage.
I just purchased a 2016 4Runner limited 4WD and I have been a bit underwhelmed by the MPG. I'm averaging about 16.5mpg in mixed driving and I traded in a 2014 Explorer Sport that had 500 lb/ft of torque (tuned and DPs) and it got better mpg but required 93 octane. The 4runner is incredibly smooth by comparison but pretty lackluster in the torque department.
