Another "new 3rd gen owner questions" thread

Hey all, picked up a 2002 V6 auto 130k miles for 8.5k a few months ago, the first pic is from when I put on the summer tires (oh yea, it came with 2 full sets of tires + rims). I can't figure out how to attach pictures inline with text in between, sorry, so they're all at the end.

I've gone through all the preventative maintenance I can think of. Can't tell you how valuable all the info I've gotten from this forum has been. I've never been a DIYer mechanic before, so I'm learning as I go.

I'm the third owner. I don't know a ton about the history from before, the guy I bought it from sounded like he took pretty good care of it. Before I bought it, he did a brake fluid flush, an replaced 3 of the belts (PS, alternator, and AC), the timing he "thinks" this was done by the first owner, but not sure when

Maintenance I've done:

coolant flush
oil change
replaced fuel filter
oil change in front/rear diffs and t-case
new spark plugs
clean MAF and TB
greased shafts
new PCV valve

Runs beautifully now. Getting ~ 17.5 mpg when in the 70-80mph range, and ~20 when in the 60s mph range, I think 18s mpg for city.

Tranny fluid looks good (red/pinkish) and smells good (sweet, unburnt)

Ok now my questions:

This second picture is of when I was changing the PCV valve, and noticed a significant amount of oil residue inside the manifold when I took it off that freaked me out. Sorry the pic is really bad, it's hard to get an angle with light in there. I did some searching on this forum and am not too worried now, I found out some residue is normal but couldn't find many pictures and felt like there's "a lot" in mine, or is that normal? Also, notice the oil around the hole where the valve goes. Is that was a valve cover gasket leak looks like? Again this is something I read is somewhat common, but haven't found many pictures of what that actually looks like. I tightened all the bolts (with no torque wrench), they all felt really loose. I should take another picture specifically of the valve cover. If the second one doesn't give the info you need, let me know and I'll go get another.

Second, that third picture is of...I dont know what it's called (wishbone maybe?). It's the lower arm of the front suspension, driver side, where it attaches to the frame. There's a gap where it looks like a rubber bushings should be to stop the "wishbone" from sliding around, but obviously there is none, and same on the passenger side.

Anyways, thanks for all the help. I've caught the bug. Everyday I'm popping the hood, just to look around. I want to find more things to work on as I'm reading and learning more, sadly it always seems to cost a lot.

That is where the PCV valve goes, right? Assuming it is, that residue is on the top side of a splash shield inside the valve cover. Somewhat normal. Hopefully the rest of the top end doesn't look like that. Did you use a new grommet for your PCV? You did dumb question.

Do you have a sway bar? Are those holes where the end links go?

Ya I used a new gromment, so I'll keep an eye on it and see how it progresses.
Lol I did dumb question? I reread and can't see what I said that's dumb....

I have a sway bar, it doesn't connect there. This is the connection arm from the lower spring and strut to the frame, there are two spots on the frame that look like this. Its a large horse shoe shaped piece. Pic is on the frame side, towards the engine.

hmmmmm..... something about the truck looks odd..... Sport Flares with NO sport hood? Looks like the truck was either in a front end accident of the owner bought a set of sport flares.

LOL No, you didn't ask a dumb question. I was saying I was asking a dumb question because the PCV wouldn't stay in there without a grommet. I can see why you would think that because I wrote "You ask dumb question" I got a good chuckle when I reread what I wrote. Sorry about that.

I try to look at my truck to see what that is in the picture. Maybe take a pic a little further away.

Ok after rereading and looking really close at the pic, I believe you're referring to the lower control arm bushing. Maybe the outer lip has broken off. There should still be rubber inside or else you would be metal to metal. The rubber is vulcanized to the inner and outer sleeve. If that's not what it is then maybe it's the front differential support. Let me see if I can get some exploded views to help you identify your part.

Sorry for the slow reply, have been without internet for a couple days.

Great news if the residue under the splash guard is normal. What about the oil residue on the outside? Think that leaked out from the old PCV valve grommet? (which yes, I replaced...not dumb question haha). I attached one more picture from a different angle, with the new valve in. It's dirty, but the oil is obvious.

The part is the bottom left one in your second exploded view, 48454E. Based on that diagram I have nothing to worry about, there's no other part that goes in the gap I was concerned about.

Sweet

Based on the pic, yes I'd agree what we can see around the pcv is most likely due to a little seepage from the old crzppy grommet.

If you haven't you'd better bypass the factory tranny cooler. Or this could happen to you: any body ever crack-opened up OEM rad, if not, here we go! - YotaTech Forums

I also recommend a magnefine filter for your tranny while you're at it installing an external cooler (run it just before in the in to the cooler).

Just happened to another unfortunate sole (Riders of Lohan) on here in the last few days, his estimate repair bill is $4700.

Nice rig, nice mileage - great find- luck!
