Another opinion thread, 2wd vs. 4x4

In Canada, I don't think the 2WD was ever available for the 3rd gens. That's why the rear of ours has so much less badging. All it has on the back is SR5, SR5 V6, or Limited with the 4Runner badge. I think they even removed the V6 after the 4 cylinder was discontinued in Canada, whereas in the US, there is an additional badge that says 4WD on 4WD models.

For me, I would prefer 4WD just to not worry about winter driving conditions here.

although2 wheel drive is awesome still off road its just crazy what i can do without havin 4 wheel in. but having 4wheel is nice to have when i get too crazy. plus i love it in the snow it does amazing!

Sorry 2 wheelers,I didn't think of those not in the snowbelt and if you never off road and live in the south paying extra for 4wd is kinda silly.

My truck originally came from Ontario but it has all the badges and 4 wheel drive? Could somebody shine some light on that. Back to the thread topic, i bought a 4x4 cause i ski. Plus like what clemson said theres something about having 4wheel drive!

Ya I've never seen a 2wd 3rd gen or 4th gen in CO. I've seen a couple for sale on autotrader but their always private sellers and their always from California or Florida. Honestly, unless you live in a place like SoCal, I think a 2wd is pointless, but even then, if you buy a 4runner, what are you buying it for. They dont get good gas mileage so their not very practical as a daily driver, so what would you use it for? I bought my 4runner because I needed something that I could lock my drums up. Putting my drums in the bed of a Tacoma was not a good idea and I would rather stick needles in my eyes than buy a topper. So I wanted the cargo space but I also wanted to be able to do some 4wheeling, be able to tow a trailer across the U.S. and not have to worry about road conditions and be able to go snowboarding and be able to pack 4 of my friends, myself and all of our boards and equipment into it. Hmm, I think this is a one sided discussion that factors more on where you live than why you bought it. I go to LA at least 2 times a month and I think I've seen 2 4wd 4runners ever in LA. But then I come to CO and never see a 2wd 4runner. I dont know where I was goin with this but ya, Im done.

i used to go party and burn couches in places you had to have a pretty capable 4wd to get to, kept alot of the riffraff out of our "good time havin", not to mention the Po-Po, really good idea the night of, cause it keep dummies from tryin to get soused and drive home but getting out the next morning with a hangover pretty much sucked

Ok this is totally off subject but it has always bugged me. Sloan, what is up with your tires in you sig pic? It seriously looks like you have racing slicks on your 4runner.

cause they are! lol not really, i guess its the armor-all i had put on them? they are just regular Firestone Destination tires that have probably been on my 4runner since the thing was built. I just haven't needed new tires yet and my parents aren't gonna pay the cash for me to get some more meatier ones when i dont need any

I do find in the 3rd gen. 2WD, it tends to shift to third on a hill, especially if you have the cruise control on. I find myself turning off the cruise control on hills. Not sure if you have that same problem on the 4WD 3rd gen. models?

Yes the 4wd's do the same thing, I have an 02 Sport w/ the 4.10 gears and it at least unlocks the T/C on any grade and usually dumps itself into 3rd. I drive up to VT a lot and 89 and 91 are very hilly, I have quit even bothering with cruise. It seems like if I can hold my speed w/o dropping a gear or unlocking the T/C the CC should be able to as well.

Bought 2wd the first time. It went plenty of places, but I want to be able to go everywhere. Got the 4th gen 4x4 just to find that the 4wd sucks. It does fine on the road in snow but the 3rd gen was just as capable for mild offroading.

Uhmmm, what!!! My 4th Gen kicks A** in 4x mode - granted the 4th gen had the lowest ground clearance of all models to date, but other than that she is unstopable. What experience could have made you say it sucks
