im looking at taking this think in another direction. wondering of just the bottom hinge is enough to hold the 35" tires and possibly more.

I would say it could be, but the frame that holds the tire would have to be a different design than the picture shown. Maybe more of a triangle configuration with the tire in the center.

Might be good to have some sort of attachment point right around the back of the tire to keep the tire from vibrating too much.

yes it is possible look at CBI and ADO they both use a single hinge point, most of the failures have happened because people only top mount/weld the hinge to the bumper, but if you use a through pin that is welded at both the top and the bottom of the bumper you will increase its strength. also if you can tilt the tire so its not vertical that helps as it "pushes" the weight into/onto the latching mechanism to help support the weight as well. another thing to think about is the placement of the tire, the further away from the hinge you place the tire the more stress it puts on the hinge, -the longer the arm the greater the leverage which means greater mechanical advantage, and a greater chance of failure. i hope all that made sense

if i got a pic of my truck and where it goes i could show better, with multiple pics, its at an angle coming off the plate right under the frame. kinda hard to describe

yea yeah i get what your saying. it will be where the latch holds it some, but im more worried about when it is all the way out. and its big pipe for sure but its also a big tire. we thought about keeping the top hinge and running a pin though top and bottom but it would go right over the light.

i wouldnt use this platform at all, id make something custom. that tubing that carrier is made out of is not strong enough to work with just one mount it will fail. it was designed with and needs two mounts

thats what im thinking. the bottom mount is the problem, it cant really be accesed to re-enforce. but i could use the tube thing for the bottom one, and make the top hinge longer and mount it to the body, but then they problem comes up when the swing is out and if the hatch misses it when opening, i know the top 90% hinge would have to cut off the part that mounts to the back, but clearance...

I agree 100%

Even with the latch supporting, that one hinge is not going to be enough. The hinges on the swing away's with just the lower hinge are WAY beefier than this thing. That isn't even to mention the stress it would put on the frame/body in that area. You would have to beef it up even more than just installing it with both hinges.

If you want a single hinge, you are going to have to pay for a real rear bumper.

Why are you considering a single hinge design instead of normal retrofit? What's the advantage?

The main reason AFAIK is that the top hinge doesn't completely mate with the 3Rd Gens quarter panel and that's where the OP is having a big dilemna.....He either needs to reconfigure it or eliminate it.

Stick Figure that rear bumper design is gorgeous!

this wont work, if i remember correctly the way that system works, when the tire is swung out its moves at an angle, it does not stay perfectly flat and arch completely level, it travels up a slight bit. and both hinges are designed and angled for that(they do this so that it will want to stay in the closed position and take some stress off of the latch). if you just put a pipe on the bumper and call it good you better know your geometry(that could get complicated fast), other wise when you go to swing the tire out, it will bind and either will not open all the way or it will break or bend at the weakest link(probably your body mount, and it will bend or tear the sh1t out of your body). just make a custome rear bumper or buy a swing-out for a hilux-surf.

like i say. when the hatch opens it has a high chance of hitting the top hinge. its basically make it all cut it up then see if it works.

and to those who keep saying they are different. no crap. i DO know what a single hinge looks like and i DO know its different. but this is $75 total as to the about $1000 for the bumper with one.

I think the problem lies in that it is a 2nd Gen tire carrier....and he's having issues modding it for his 3rd Gen.....

Not sure why you can't access the bottom hinge area...will have to look at mine...but Blcktpgsr put his 3rd Gen carrier mount under the light...so it should be doable.....

that was a surf, totally different

His truck is a 4Runner....with a Surf Lift Gate....the rear quarter panel is built the same as yours man...

I know the carrier is from the Surf....but you should be able to mount it in the same location he did. No???

If you are asking, "can you modify the carrier that you have to work with only one hinge?" Then My answer would be no. It could but you would have to totally rebuild it so it would be easier to start from scratch. One that is designed to work with one hinge point would be much stronger too.
