any markings or codes to tell '98 from '99 headlights?

Hi,
Besides the 99-02 headlight housing being more clear is there any way to tell the difference? Are the numbers on the front different? I have a guy going around to all the scrap yards here and want to be sure we get the correct ones.

It's pretty easy like you mentioned, the 96-98's have fluted covers, and the 99-02's have clear glass covers. They'll all bolt right in.

yeah thanks - just wondering if there was an actual code because the guy who is looking for me isn't really familiar with the different types. Anyways, he's going to take pictures with his phone before we buy them.

just tell whoever is looking that the lens needs to be clear. Not cloudy.

If you're looking for clear ones on the cheap, these are the ones I used for my projector retrofit. They have glass lenses and are pretty decent quality. ONLY downside is the plastic body mount they come with is pretty cheesy, I just swapped them for my factory ones. It was well worth it.

I'm out in Sierra Leone so unfortunately the best bet is that my guy can find them in a scrap yard somewhere here .... there are a lot of 4runners around so I am hopeful. Otherwise I wait until my next trip to the UK and bring them back in my luggage.
 
That would be the 1st set of aftermarket lights I have seen with glass lenses. For that price that's pretty good . I emailed that same guy and he said they were plastic lens so I didn't buy them.
I'm going to talk to someone else there , thanks for the lead.

Thats really weird.. all aftermarket ive had my hands on for our year are glass lens.. try rockauto.com next time and go for the TYC branded ones.

Nope, they all bolt up the same with the same hardware as stock. The only difference ive noticed is that aftermarket glass is a little more brittle and the plastic has the same issue.

Ya and the dust boot that covers the light plug , the a/m one disintegrated ( at the 2 yr. mark ) and I had to grab one from the dealer , he joked and said its the first one he's ever sold . The factory one on the other side still looks new and its 15 yrs. old :D
 
I thought the 99-00 were the older styles with the 01-02 having the newer clear lenses...personally, I dig the older ones....

'99 and up had the newer clear style. I have a '99.

It is important that he makes sure the glass says Toyota. I have prospected junkyards and you find many TYC and other Asian junk headlights out there.
