Back on a hard tail ('13 Trek Stache 8) after 7 years on a full suspension bike...

Every single person I know that has one of these raves about how much they like it. My LBS had a killer deal on some demo models, but I just missed one in my size.

Great pics and nice bikes on here. I just graduated from riding rail trails a couple of weeks ago and rode a place called 6 mile reservoir here in central NJ a couple of times since. Really growing to love true mountain biking and can easily see how you can get very excited very quickly. ITS CRAZY FUN!! I ride an entry level Giant Revel 0 29er and it's great but when going through all those trees with little room it starts to feel big. Was thinking of picking up a nice used full suspension or better hard tail but in the 26 or 27.5 size. Something like a mint upgraded '13 Giant Yukon xc is one I saw on Craigslist last week for about $500 (Msrp $900). Plus it gives me another bike for when one of my sons wants to come.

Any thoughts or advise on this?

New to the forum so I thought I'd get involved in the discussion. I live in Knoxville, TN. Currently riding a 2013 Santa Cruz Highball Carbon, fox fork with kashima coating. My drivetrain is a 1x10 full XTR set up and I9 wheels, built in Asheville, NC. I've got the bike weighing in right at 20.5 lbs minus waterbottles. Now that I've got my bike set up perfect I'm gonna start building on my new 2014 LTD 4Runner. I've ridden all over the U.S. and I'm always looking for an excuse to get away from Knoxville.

Id love to have that bike. I ride a Aluminum Highball and its great but I sure would love a Carbon one.

I did a Cyclocross race yesterday that was pretty entertaining. I was in the first race of the morning, right at the beginning of the race about 30 seconds in we're riding up a grass hill than it curves and turns while going down a grass hill. One person slide out and went down, in the grass still wet from morning dew no one could stop and that early in a race everyone is packed in pretty tight still. It was chain reaction. People started piling up. I slide kinda sideways with both wheels locked up right into the back of someone else who was just getting back up. I was hit from behind immediately and while off balance got hit again which knocked me over. The next hit after that knocked me over. I was on my stomach the ground and a dude ran into me and a dude came sliding in front wheel straight into me, my body stopped his bike and him and his bike flipped when he went over the bars. He never let go of his brakes to get his hands out to brake his fall so he came down hard. Someone else laid it down on his side and slide right past my head into that guy. It was awesome, carnage everywhere to start the race. When the race was over I had a tire mark on the back of the jersey from literally getting ran over, I had scrapes on my back from the knobbies on his tire and a huge bruise and scrape on my ribs from what I'm assuming was that guys pedal to the back. It hurt pretty good but I could not stop laughing as it all happening, my wife missed the start so none of it's on camera :(

You can see the tire mark on my back lol

I just got into mountain biking again, just picked up a 2012 stumpjumper 26er that was sitting around at the shop by me. The trails behind my house all run along the bayou and are straight sand where the trail has gone through the vegetation. Any advice on traction in sand? I can't go strictly to a sand tire because as soon as I get through those patches I'm back on vegetation or doing a 20 foot drop over roots on dirt and then climbing back up the other side of the bayou. It's the craziest mix of terrain for an area I have seen. I am way aired down but that only helps so much as far as I can tell.

Wide rims with 2.3-2.4 tires at low pressure is your best bet. Without a fat bike there's no such thing as traction in dry sand.
