Thinking about ditching my front 180mm Tektro for a BB7 with a 200mm G2 Clean Sweep, $70 for the set right now on Amazon. Thoughts? Is there a better brake/rotor combo for the money?
I've never used them, but if you're wanting mechs I've never heard anyone complain about their BB7s. Does that price include an adapter for the bigger rotor?
As an alternative, and if you don't have anything against hydros, you can get a Shimano SLX setup with a 203mm rotor (adapter included) from Chain Reaction Cycles for a little over $100:
Shimano SLX M675 Disc Brake + Rotor Bundle | Chain Reaction Cycles
They offer free shipping to the US on orders over $99, so you could pad the order with something small that you need anyway.
If you want to stay closer to the $70 price point, you could go with the Deore M615 bundle instead: Shimano Deore M615 Disc Brake + Rotor Bundle | Chain Reaction Cycles
Oh wow. I didn't realize I could get into a hydro setup that cheap. I'm pinching pennies for the next couple years, but $100 for the Deore hydro is doable. I'll have to think about that.
Aww yiss...
Chainreaction shipped quick, I ordered over the weekend and had my parts yesterday. The 203mm rotors were out of stock and I didn't want to wait, so I ordered 180mm. I can always use it to upgrade the rear if I decide I still want 200 in front. Thanks for the tip, MONTYMTB!
I am currently not an avid mountain biker but a lot of my buddies are.
Unfortunately, one of my buddies, Andy Hoang N. Anh (44 yrs), tragically died while mountain biking at Snow Summit, Big Bear, Ca last Friday, 08/28/2015. We are still in shock and heartbroken.
Please be safe out there - ride with a partner(s) and consider basic first aid/CPR.
Good2go... Do you have a black 06 trail ed. 4runner with black wheels? If yet, we met at the DustyBuddies ride.
My post here about Andy.
We planned to go back to the flag to raise it up after the funeral. IM me if you want to go. I will send you the info.
I never got into Mountain Biking seriously, but I think I may want to change that (keep this in mind and bear with me through my ignorance). I tore my PCL a few years ago and running isn't exactly enjoyable, so a lot of the sports I enjoy are just painful now. I'm thinking the (relatively) low resistance of mountain biking would be a good outlet for me to start getting active again, with the added benefit of strengthening those muscles which would help make running more comfortable so I can play sports again.
Right now I have a 10 year old Raleigh hardtail that is probably sufficient, but there are a couple things I'm not fond of. For one, the gears don't cycle properly - especially when trying to get to the higher gears. Second, the top tube is pretty much horizontal, so there isn't much space between the tube and my manhood - not ideal considering how accident prone I am.
So my questions for you guys are 1) Do you have any advice for getting into Mountain biking? Anything from literature to gear and 2) What are some of your recommendations for a new bike? I would like to be on the lower end of the financial spectrum, sub-$500 if possible, but of course if you can present a good argument for spending more, I'm willing to take that into consideration. I can already think of a few arguments myself. :biggrin1:
