Any recommendation for replacement dash kit for TRD or reference for the black paint?

I was hoping someone may have run into this problem and have found something along the way. I managed to find a replacement kit from Crutchfield, but it only comes in silver. Located here:

I tried to visit 3 different shops in Houston, and no one has been able to help so far. Two of them even questioned why I wanted to replace the factory radio by asking things like "why? Isn't it touchscreen?" Or "why? Doesn't it have bluetooth?" Yeah - it has all that. Turns out it's still an awful radio and I want my Pioneer back. Seemed kind of odd for them to question why I want to pay them money.

Anyway, back on track - I am still doing some research to find a place to take it, but I wanted to check here as well. I'm wondering if anyone knows either: where I can find a kit in the black to match the existing paint, where I could find said paint, or where would be a good place to take the vehicle for a custom install. I have done this type of work in the past, so the install doesn't scare me, I just need to find the right parts. And either my google-fu is weak, or there just isn't anything out there. In the end, I could always use a glossy black paint, but I kind of like the specks that are in the factory dash kits.

Just get the kit and take it to a body shop. Any competent body shop can match the paint.

I have that same Crutchfield trim kit. be prepared to be disappointed. It is functional, but some of the contours are not perfect, especially around the top where it meets the clock display, and I found the silver paint to be quite thin in spots and not quite a perfect match to the factory silver used on the rest of the interior

Thanks for the heads up. I may keep trying to see if I can find someone to do a custom mold. My concern with painting the one that they had was (1) I didn't know if the paint would stay on without issues like chipping and (2) if painting wouldn't throw off some of the tabs just enough to cause issues with locking it into place. I could always just paint and then cut with an x-acto as needed, but that's what I was trying to avoid if possible. The things we do!

Tejas Toyota in Humble offered to paint some plastic parts for me. They said as long as they aren't chrome it shouldn't be an issue. They apply an adhesion promoter before they paint.

If you do get rid of your factory radio let me know. I would definitely be interested in it.

I know that this isn't exactly the direction that you were heading, but (unfortunately)... I found myself in a similar situation, a ways back, where a center console trim panel 'Color match issue vs Dealer replacement cost' prohibition, forced me to find an alternative approach. I also have the same kit as above, fit and finish is fine on mine but I agree to the silver paint being thin, although it holds up better then the stock stuff in my opinion. I plan on removing it and having a body shop color match the radio kit, two pillars near the HVAC controls and the silver piece around the cup holders. As far as fit after painting it shouldn't be a issue if the shop preps them properly and doesn't over coat, no need for them to paint the mounting tabs since they are unseen after install.

Just painted my door handles with rustoleum flat black enamel & it's been a 2 wks & 1 wash holding up fine ! Course we're little bit dryer here also so I would think a satin/gloss mix or separate would be fine ? Not sure worth the hassle to perfect match but I'm only slightly OCD !!!

Thanks! And yes, I have gotten myself in trouble before with trying to do a little too much myself. Haha. Great thread that you have! Glad you got the problem solved. Looks great! Of course, now you have me considering installing USB ports all over!

Sorry - worded that wrong - it's not as much the tabs I'm worried about (although I kind of am if I don't know if I can completely trust the person actually doing the work) as much as the issue that Jono mentioned. If it's already off a bit I don't want to make it worse. But, as rigtec said, where there's a will, there's a way!

No worries - I have the same issue - especially when it comes to my vehicles! Haha

If the paint starts fading and you want a permanent fix, you can buy color matched handles from Toyota or the flat black ones on the TE. Not sure if you knew this but if not just a heads up. Pricing wasn't to high either, I think all four doors was $130 or something like that. I'd have to find my notes
