Any SoCali Trail Riders & Shooters?

Hi,
Been slammed with grad school the past two years but its nearly over. I live in Los Angeles and its nice, but I am missing the woods, mountains, nature too much. I have a Jeep Rubicon (small lift, 4.88s, winch, skids, bumpers, etc) and a 98 4runner with small lift, e-locker, Shrockwords bumper, 5 speed. I am dying, dying to explore Cali and see what is out there. I would LOVE to get the 4runner on trails, not too hard core I do not want to destroy it like some Jeep guys seem to enjoy on Big Bear trips Ive been on, I just want to get out in nature, maybe do some camping, see good scenes, maybe historical stuff, landmarks whatever. I also grew up hunting and shooting, and am a retired SWAT guy. One thing I do not like about Cali is how anti gun it is, and at least in LA hard to find a place to shoot. I do not want to wait for hours at a range, or pay tons of money for some nazi rule indoor range with God knows who else is shooting in there. I would love to meet some hunters and guys who also wheel or trail ride, camp, etc. Then maybe hook up on weekends starting in the summer.

If so please email me I do not always get on here and am cramming for midterms, but daydreaming of how I need to get my 4runner in the woods and get some dirt on it and trail scratches from really using it. A lift and locker and big front bumper makes me seem like a poser just using it on the 405!!!

Btw, Cali is not as anti gun as you make it sound. I'm sure there are plenty of indoor gun clubs in LA. But LA is also one of the largest cities in the United States, heck the whole damn continent. So don't expect to find a lot of outdoor shooting ranges. My understanding though is that there are plenty of gun clubs and just about every gun is legal here - for now.

I'm prior military and have many friends and family that are gun guys.

Indoor range fees aren't that bad. Place I go is about $20/hr...50% off if you're military (wish I still had my ID). A great outdoor range is Burro Canyon Shooting Range up in Azusa Canyon. You can shoot at the regular range or rent out an entire lot for yourself. $80 to rent your own lot and it covers 4 people. Any additional people will cost $20 each. For that price, you can spend all day out there. Bring whatever targets you want (they also sell stuff there like bowling pins for $8). Bring a cooler and food and make it a day. There is also an off road park close by.

Only problem is...the EXPENSIVE @$$ ammo! Especially now, I see alot of empty shelves. Walmart is now limiting to 3 boxes per customer.

Yes ammo is through roof...and I cant do indoor ranges, for many reasons, and rules as well I am used to drawing and shooting and rapid fire, no can do at most indoor ranges. As well gang bangers shoot at indoor ranges, so do morons who commit suicide, and city slickers who I dont trust.

As for outdoor range prices....thats still absurd to me...where I grew up in OH and PA, you can join a range for $30 a YEAR, indoor pistol, outdoor pistol, rifle, fishing pond, and indoor and outdoor archery....in America I think ranges like that are common and very affordable! Not out here....but I am staying here a bit longer so do want some trigger time other than when I fly home to PA or visit Welcome to train with old buddies and go back to DC to play with my cop teams....I need some shooting and wheeling in Cali!!!

Only place i shoot is at angeles shooting range over by tujunga, outdoor, always open (most of the time) with paper up to 100 yds, and steel up to like 800.. which part of LA are you from?

Ok it sounds like you don't belong in LA. How would you even know who is a gang banger? So many kids in LA that are not active in gangs still dress a certain way. It reads like you are profiling people who dress ghetto.

Also, I don't think there is a spree of gang bangers killing people at gun ranges in LA LoL. You know where else gang banger go? The grocery store, the movies, the mall. Are you going to avoid all those places as well?

I think you should check out Fresno or Bakersfield. Less city slickers ...

Or move to San Diego ... Still very diverse but a lot more chill and the bad areas are fairly isolated. Plus the military population keeps the lib / conservative ratio at about 50/50, kind of like CO, OR or WA.

I don't really like indoor ranges. The place I go to usually is called Oak Tree Gun Club and it's more shotgun oriented but it's a beautiful outdoor range with a small pistol range and a rifle range I haven't actually been to since it was built. I don't know what area you're in but it might be a good place to check out if it's not too far.
Angeles is also beautiful, but you need to bring your own stuff (oak tree rents) and I don't own any guns.

At the bottom of the main page go to the American T4R Group(Or something like that) Next you will find all the regional clubs and groups. Open the So-Cal one and the rest will work it's self out.

I am in Manhattan Beach. Anyone who is a shooter and starting this summer when I finish grad school, I am willing to drive to hang out around some gun guys. I go home every 3 months to visit my parents, which means for my dad and I rifle range, deer hunting, ground hog hunting, hitting the woods in the pickup and enjoying nature. Id love to get some of that around here too.

Next month for spring break Im flying back to see a mentor of mine and train at Storm Mountain Training Center...former SF, DC SWAT, contract guy. Probably some of the best sniper ranges and steel ranges in the country. I need it!

Once i saw the prices of indoor ranges and LE friends in LA told me about all the rigid rules, and folks who work gang units inform me plenty of them train at those indoor ranges, not where I want to be whether they are killing people or not while there. And I personally have worked more than one suicide at an indoor range back in DC, so am skeptical of being around places where its not more typical of the local population to be slinging lead.

Hardly profiling, have not even been to the ranges to see how the kids dress.

I actually thought taking some skeet, trap, sporting clays lesson might be fun. I really enjoy anything shooting related in the outdoors. And love learning, I think if I got some shotgun skills down it could only help my hunting skills or shooting and moving tactical skills.

I know there are gun guys, I see cars even here in Manhattan Beach with NRA stickers or with some sort of Coyote Varmit Hunter association but never seem to be able to get next to them at a traffic light to ask more questions. Also have not had much time to be honest, but I am looking forward to more time to figure out where the shooters and hunters are. And I love 4x4s, so figured the two go hand in hand and if there were LA/OC/SD guys here who loved their 4x4 trips and liked shooting, I might be in luck to find some good company.

I remember one case very well...I was patrol, SWAT, and peer support at one time or another. Peer support is working with the mental health folks. Well I get called out to pick up this older woman, not tell her why I am taking her to the hospital and to do my ministry/counseling thing on the drive and just be calm and try to comfort her but not tell her whats up (jeeze)...well the night before, her son shot her grand daughter (not sure if it was an argument turned into intentional shooting as they were doing drugs together, or an accident of some sort, or his daughter committed suicide). The cops come and cannot determine what happened, so cant lock him up yet but take all the firearms out of the house. The girl was on life support....next morning he goes to an indoor range, rents a gun, blows his head off in front of a bunch of folks, gets sent to same hospital on life support....I get to take mom/grandmother to hospital, and meet up with the counselor at hospital, drop the bombs on her, show her her son and granddaughter, and have the discussion about pulling the plug on them... Not fond memories.
