Any springs that match the lift provided by 99 Talls?

The short version:

Is there a way to replace your springs with ones similar to the 99 talls without a) paying a premium (~$500) for brand new OEM springs, b) installing supbar stuff like Moog, c) using 20 year old springs from a 99 that are likely to sag?

The long version:

I’ve got a 2002 Limited that I’d like to give a mild (~1”) lift. It’s not sagging currently, but since it’s an 02, it sits (relatively) low.

My goals are to keep the ride as close to stock as possible while increasing ground clearance slightly. This is both for more aggressive look and so I can be confident taking the truck on rough forest roads while loaded up with 2 weeks of camping gear. I’d like to avoid anything that will require additional work or parts (panhard bar, etc) other than a possible realignment.

The PO installed Bilstein 4600s in 2016, but didn’t replace the springs. I’m trying to keep costs down, so I’d like to keep the 4600s on. I understand the 99 talls would be perfect to that end, but I can’t justify spending ~$500 right now to buy them new. Based on what I’ve read, it’s not a great idea to buy them used either, as they are likely to have some sag after 20 years of use.

It would be awesome if I could take used springs from a newer vehicle, that way I could get them cheap but still relatively fresh. I’ve seen mention of using LC, FJ, or 4th gen springs, but all of those seem to be much stiffer and create more lift than the 99 Talls.

Does anyone ever see lightly used 99 Talls for sale (bought new within the last 5 years)? Like if someone installed new OEM 99 springs, then later upgraded to a 3" lift and wanted to get rid on the 99s?

I’ve seen people use Moogs, which seem affordable, but from what I can tell they don’t have the best reputation.

Do I have any good options here? Or am I trying to achieve the impossible?

FWIW, I’m currently running Cooper Discoverer AT3 265 75r16 and I don’t anticipate going any larger.

And sorry to all for posting yet another lift thread!

For what it's worth, I picked up a used set of 99's and they provided the usual lift for me. I added a 20mm trim packer to one side to help even things out.

I also have AirLift springs in there but normally always keep them at minimum 5psi. They do not impact the ride height that way. But by upping the pressure you can jack the back end up a little and definitely keep it from sagging with more weight.

Just an idea.

JZiggy Just read through your entire build thread. Amazing work. That's pretty close to what I'd like to do to my ride - focus on subtle but meaningful mods that improve the driving experience without sacrificing on road efficiency. Your proficiency is far beyond where I'm at right now though.

The way your trucks sits on those 99s is pretty close to what I'm looking for. I imagine my front might sit a little lower with the 3.4, but hopefully not too much. Do you know how many miles the springs had on them when you bought them?

From what I've read, the general opinion seemed to be "you don't know how much sag you'll get with used springs till you install them on and put 600lb in the back". That is, the PO telling you they're fine, or showing you pics of how the truck sat unloaded won't prove anything. But if it's just $100 or so and half a day's work, I wouldn't be against risking it if it's fairly possible that everything turns out as well as it did for you.

Jidaran Wow, thank you!!

I assume you're talking about the rear springs only, right? I never upgraded my front, they are the original springs.

Regarding the spring I bought: no, unsure on the mileage. Guessing at least 150K

The 3RZ block in only like 40# lighter than the 5VZ. The W59 manual trans is probably a bit lighter than the V6 automatic tranny though.

Here is my 2000 limited 4runner with new shocks and springs all around. The shocks were Bilstein 5100s with the front adjustable ones set on the bottom post setting.

Front Shocks
Bilstein 24-248730

Rear Shocks
Bilstein 24-249966

Front Springs
OME 880

Rear Springs
OME 890

Here is a picture with the new suspension in.

98 Springs give almost as much lift as 99's but definitely more than 02 springs.

I bought my springs off Ebay and went with Raybestos springs. The coils are a tad bit thicker than stock springs if I remember correctly. I've got 32k miles on them and no complaints here, they have not sagged at all. Probably going to get flamed for this though :)

Old man emu springs are your highest quality / lowest cost alternatives . I’m sure you won’t have any issue finding people who recommend them . Fantastic products .

Wheelersoffroad.com had always been my go to!

I purchased the rear Moog springs last year as a inexpensive, short term "fix" until I decide if I'm going to spend money on OME suspension. I've been happy with how well they work, my truck doesn't squat with a few 100 #'s of cargo weight in the back and it actually drives better than it did with the original saggy springs. It was the best $45 that I've spent on the truck so far.

The 890s are the smallest model they sell, right? Unless I'm mistaken, they provide about 2" of lift and it's recommended to pair them with 5100s.

I picked up a set a rear springs from a 5th Gen trail that were only used about 5k miles for $25. Reading on here, it sounds like they'll work and I'd expect about an inch lift on from my stock 99's. Also should be slightly stiffer, which is a plus because I cannot stand the sag when I have my boat hooked up. I don't believe the 5th gen shocks work with our 3rd gens but the guy threw in the stock bilsteins for free. I'll report back once I have the springs in, but do a search as guys have had success running 5th gen rear springs in 3rd gen 4runners

Edit: I referenced these two threads before grabbing them

The shocks will bolt up, but are about 2" longer than stock. Unless you use bump stop spacers, they will bottom out before the stock bump stops. Also, they will be long enough that the (5th gen) springs can fall out of the perches before full droop.

5th gen springs are a bit wider top and bottom than the stock springs and a little shorter. Without a 10mm trim packer, they will be a tiny bit loose at full droop too.

They are cheap, stiffer and give a small lift though! (I'm currently running them)

OP - I was in your exact same boat. Here's the solution:

99 talls up front (Moog brand works fine here) and OEM 906's out back.

We'll load up our family of 4, the dog, 98 lb tent, and about 200lbs of supplies for an aggressive weekend of wheeling/camping and you can barely tell the truck has anything in it. The stance is perfect, and the ride quality is great.

What's the part number for the "talls" you are talking about. I have a set of brand new springs for sale that I bought for the 2000 Limited I just sold and it was my understanding that they are an inch taller than the originals.

Those are exactly the ones I'm looking for in the back.

How much are you asking for them?

i just scooped some lightly used 99s for the front from dirteater4, so this project seems to be coming along nicely.

absalom I was seriously considered the 890s but from what I read there was debate on whether or not it was wise to run them with 4600s. A lot of people seemed to think it was ok, but the manufacturer doesn't recommend it.

Trust me, the 906's with stock shocks are the ones to get. I wheel the crap out of my with bog standard Koyo shocks. Works perfectly. You're overthinking this ;)

Google 3rd gen with 99 tall and 906's. There is a green one with that exact setup if you need some idea of what it'd look like. Hint: It looks perfect.

99's will sag like crazy in the rear with any amount of weight.

You're probably right.

I just got the truck last month and I'm a little worried about jumping too far into lift-land before I even know what I want. I'm also not sure how my idea of a "fully loaded" truck compares to yalls.

The deadline for my set up is August, when I'll be doing a two week road trip across New England with a canoe and lots of camping gear. Until then I'll won't be hauling heavy loads long distances.

The plan right now is to put 99s in all around and see how that rides. If I want to upgrade to 906s in the back, I have plenty of time to figure that out before August.
