anyone changed oil yet on 5th gen?

just posted in another thread, but the Canadian interval is still 8000 kms (5000miles). I can only assume its due to the harsher winters etc...

Who says that oil change is "NOT" recommended at 3,000 miles? According to the poll, 30% of the members change their oil at 3,000 miles. That is a good number of people (members) that are doing it wrong. It should also be mentioned that when some Toyota engines started having sludge problems, Toyota said the oil should be changed at 3,000 miles and by going to 5,000 is just too long. Toyota finally honored customers claims, but not after they turned a lot of people down. Just food for thought.

this is pretty bad that the dealers are not consistent/updated on oil change intervals. i went in yesterday for my first at 5k and they mentioned nothing about changing to 10k. looks like they used 5w-20 and the sticker says next due in 3months or 5k.

Did you pay for the oil change? If so, I would bet they are not going to turn you away and tell you to come back @ 10,000 miles. Even if it's a small money making opportunity for them.

actually i did not. i have free changes up to 80k miles (every 5k ). just got the 10k letter in the mail today after having it changed yesterday. the interesting part would be those waiting 10k for first change. who knows what oil was put in when they built the runners? was it the synthetic or not?
 
The maintenance required light goes on around the 5k mark. You'll notice that it'll stay lit longer once you start the car, beginning around 4500 miles.

I had mine changed at 5k, once the light came on.

That was part of my reasoning behind why I changed my oil at ~2500 miles. My 4runner was manufactured in September and I guess was just sitting somewhere until I got it at the end of November, couple that with the fact that majority of my trips were short and in below freezing temperatures.

80$...synthetic oil, at the stealership.

Nice concept though...you roll up to door, honk your horn, into a nice heated area, go have coffee, and they bring it around for you. Place was clean and the help was friendly.

Did you guys in the USA not get first two yrs of maintenance for free (or included in the price if you wanna look at it that way)?

Here in Canada, all scheduled maintenance is included for the first 2 yrs or 48,000kms.
 
anyone know how to reset the maintenance req light? I am waiting till 10k to change the oil and just got done rotating my tires, I dont want to have to have that light on for another 5k till i get an oil change.
EDIT: Sorry, I searched and found it. With the car in the on position but the engine not running (off), reset trip A. Done

Just got my new 'Warranty & Maintenace Guide' in the mail along with the letter 'officially' saying changes can be done every 10k/1yr with the new SAE 0W-20 oil that our 4R's came with. The letter was dated March 8th, I guess it is taking them a LONG time to mail them out! I purchased at the end of Nov. and I know a few others have received theirs.

i got 2 years free maintenance with my new TE (purchased last month). i live in maine.

Sorry for the off-topic question, but can you tell the date of manufacture from the VIN?

You can tell the month of manufacture from the black sticker inside the drivers door. It's in the upper right hand corner of the sticker. Mine is 10/09
I'm sure Toyota could tell you the exact day of manufacturer from the VIN if they had to.
