anyone changed oil yet on 5th gen?

The 2 years free maintenance in my area is only for previous toyota owners. Since this is my first Toyota, I miss out. Sucks.

I'm sure Toyota could tell you the exact day of manufacturer from the VIN if they had to.

7harper, thanks for the info. I think that I will do my first oil change at 5K since my TE was built in 11/09 and I did not purchase until 3/1/10! Possibly 4 month old oil before I got it.
 
i changed my oil this weekend and what a pain in the ass it is compared the FJ. had to remove the skid plate since it couldn't swing down enough for the tray to catch the oil. luckily, i was on a lift and it was free. anyone know if they maintenance light will be changed from 5k miles to 10k miles or is that pretty much set in the odometer?
 
The maint required light will trigger every 5,000 miles. There is no way they can change that now even though they changed the oil change interval.

I doubt that Toyota would change it even if they could, since they still recommend tire rotations and other inspections / maintenance at 5K intervals

There's a maintenance required light? Bummer.

Is there a way to manually reset that? Or do you have to drive around for 5000 miles with it blinking at you?
 
I think it's the same as in my Lexus. With Trip/Odometer on odometer, Turn the key or push the button twice to the ON position (w/o starting the car). IMMEDIATELY press and hold down the trip reset button and it should display - - - - - - - which count down. When all 0000000 are displayed, it is reset and you can release the button and wait 5,000 more miles.
 
Did my first change today and as far as i was concerned it wasn't all that bad doing it on the ground with no lift....I know the skid plate towards the back has an access hole for the oil pan drain but i removed the whole plate and then the front one I unbolted and let it sorta hang/hinge down. I had a smaller oil drain pan that i could lay at an angle and let the oil canister drain into. There really wasnt a whole lot of oil in it and i had no problem getting it in the small drain pan. Drained both the canister and the oil pan pretty much at the same time that way. Very easy filter change, bolt everything back up underneath and fill it up with oil. Not very complicated at least i didn't think so. Would a lift make it easier sure but wasn't bad on the ground either.:peace:
 
Sorry i didn't think about taking pictures when i was doing it. If you buy the purolator oil filter cartridge for our T4R's then it comes with a picture and word description step by step of how to do the filter change....hope this helps
 
What does the oil filter housing look like? Is it the black housing with 8 or 10 bolts to remove? Is there a drain plug for the engine oil and a separate one for the filter?

That sounds like the oil pan. Do NOT remove that. The oil filter housing should look something like this (to the right).

It's a pretty straightforward oil change process. Anyone who has changed the oil in a car, truck or SUV should have no problem. The cartridge filter was a PITA to find, but easy to install.I used Rhino ramps for a little extra room for the skid plate to swing down and it was a piece of cake. 15 minute job.

My other cars use cartridge filters but those are all replaceable from the top. Why Toyota didn't do this I have no idea. Both of my '05 BMW's have cartridge filters on the top side of the engine. Even the Merc's is accessible from the top.

My MINI makes a huge f'ing mess w/ the filter cartridge on top. I much prefer the filter cartridge underneath.
 
Yes, it's on the front left of the engine. I think it's a stupid design, would rather just unscrew a filter and screw a new one on. Rant over.

Thanks, and I agree. The FJ was easy to change, and right on top with a catch basin for the oil.
