Anyone done any efi tuning on the 2uz-fe V8 4runner?

I'm from the nissan/infiniti vq35 world and one of my previous cars was a turbocharged 350z. I got pretty well into engine management systems and a/f and ignition tuning at that point. I'm not really looking to heavily modify the 4runner (power wise anyway) but would be interested in an aftermarket engine management system that would allow me to optimize power delivery and maybe even create a map for fuel economy. Has anyone delved into this with this motor before? What were your experiences? Was it worth it? How much $$$ is involved?

URD has piggyback controls that work pretty well. Depending on what you want to control you'd be spending anywhere from $200 to $1000. They are good products though, and although I've never used them, I've only heard good things.

Personally I don't know of any other products for Toyota's, unless you go to a full standalone like Megasquirt.

If you just want to adjust your fuel maps and timing the URD kits are great.
 
Guys over on lextreme seem to like the megasquirt. Looks like I could set this up for about 500 bux. Currently looking for some screenshots and/or information on the layout of the software. Anyone on this board used megasquirt?

I've used Megasquirt quite a bit. It's a great standalone. Setup can be a bit tedious if you're not familiar with the software, but once you get the hang of it you can literally tune anything.

Reading through the Megamanual would be the best place to start. It coverers all aspects of the install and tuning process.
 
I'd go for a map2ecu (or 3 now) or look into a haltech for tuning. Many good tuning shops are familiar with those ems systems. Thats what I would do if I had the V8 since I like full control over the engine. I would also look if the URD maf cali can work on your truck (I'm sure it could) since it is a good bang for the buck.
 
will the haltech work? They were very popular with the 350z community. I've also heard other people say that they've used the URD MAF Calibrator. What is the map2ecu?
 
looked at the map2ecu and it looks good but, as is the case with alot of these units, I don't know where I would get it installed at? There doesn't seem to be alot of info around from people who have done this on a 4runner. I want to make sure I don't lose anything either when splicing a standalone in. Anyone know of a good shop in the midwest/kansas city area that could handle something like this for me?
 
Koz- that's a bummer to hear.

Back in my FD3S days, the Apex computers were one of the better options for tuning via piggyback controllers or for full stand alone management. IIRC, they had applications for the V8 Lexus Soarers and was thinkin that maybe it would apply to the UZ series of engines as well...

Either way, it sounds like it might be more trouble than it's worth.

Again, no one has been able to hack the engine management code for Toyota/Lexus. The only way to do this is to remove the OEM system and use an aftermarket engine management system. Good Luck!

Wow, I haven't heard about serious "efi" tuning on our 4runners
I wish there was as there are bolt on superchargers

My old car was an audi a4 with a haltech standalone
