Anyone ever install a Magnuson supercharger?

The one you linked won't work on any 4th gen, but Magnuson, URD, and TRD have made superchargers for the 4th gen V6's. Of course it's reliable, it has Magnuson's name on it and a 3yr warranty. Is it worth it? It's one of the cheapest hp/dollar gain out there last I checked, and the only way to get 100+ hp.

Plenty of people have a supercharger on the 1GR, just not any 4th gens. More Tacoma's and FJ's probably.

I like this option because more power is better. I already built up my v6 , Its really clean so It would be nice if Im going to keep it a long time to do this. Any good threads or suggestions on the cheapest, easiest route?

Sorta' random but is there any chance you watch the Hoonigan YouTube channel? Today's episode featured a "space race" shootout between employees and Vin's 4th Gen 4Runner came in 2nd place. He mentioned throwing on this exact SC for more power. https://youtu.be/-ppiyc1puSM

I know several guys from the TV show Street Outlaws and they build and sell new Camaro's with +700hp and still retains the factory warranty. Magnuson wanted them to use their superchargers to replace the prochargers they are currently using but they said it made less power and the drive ability was worse then on the procharged Camaro. But I’m not sure how that would translate to a 300-400hp 4Runner.

There is not going to be many out there on our 4th gen I'm sure, cause it costs about what you can buy the vehicle itself for. I just paid $6800 for my 08' for example. You don't just take a naturally aspirated (no boost) vehicle and "bolt-on" a bunch of power and wash your hands. There is fuel delivery, tuning, supporting mods, ideal maintenance one might do (IE: o2 sensors, seals, plugs). I didn't see exactly what the kit comes with or doesn't, but I simply ask why?

If I want to drop $10k+ for the vehicle, then $6k+ for a supercharger kit, plus labor to install or whatever else, you are setting yourself up for frustration if you don't have more of a handle on this type of stuff. For $20k you can get a diesel truck, get better mileage then a 4runner, tow anything, ect. Or even just getting a V8 4th gen would be smarter then opening a can of worms paying money you'll never get back, to try an make a slow 4wd SUV "fast" that has 150k plus miles in all likelihood.

I was planning on getting the URD kit, they are basically the only ones making a kit for the V8.

With the V6, Magnuson uses a positive displacement supercharger and claims 305hp while URD uses a centrifugal type supercharger and claims 355whp. The URD kit comes with an aftermarket fuel pump and injectors. $5800 for the URD, $5000 for the Magnuson. URD has done a ton of tuning with the V6 and could get you even more power if you wanted.

I really don't see why there would be a headache with any of these kits, they already come with everything you need. As for the previous post stating it doesn't make sense spending $6k on a $10k vehicle, does it make more sense spending $6k on a $20k vehicle(5th gen w/supercharger) ? Nobody has ever purchased a supercharger because it was financially beneficial.

Financially beneficial? Who said that? I have built and owned 10+ boosted rig's, so I take more into this then "power claims" to sell item's.

If you use word's like "cheapest, reliable, more power is always better, easiest" you aren't very educated on potential cause and effect. That means you overlook things, you learn hard lessons when things go wrong, an can you AFFORD to do it right? Cause if you want cheap, fast, reliable, you can only pick TWO. Not all three of them, so rather then encourage someone to spend a bunch to make a "fast suv", I take the practical approach and ask WHY?

Do these blowers (roots style you mention I'm assuming) heat soak? How many people add meth injection? Cause if you drive the balls off it all the time, that is going to be a factor, what if you're broke an can't afford premium gas and don't think it'll matter for one tank and it detonates? Boost is a constant obligation to upkeep, especially when you want to keep something a long time an have it reliable.

Also, yeah it makes more sense for a 5th gen owner to do this then a 4th. Why? People who own more expensive vehicles, that are newer, typically have more expendable cash, lower miles, ect. Just my honest .02 as an adult, having been through the excitement of power adders and knowing what it is to keep things 100% with one.

You brought it up. Everything in your second paragraph was about financial reasons why it isn't the best idea. These supercharger kits on the 1GR have been proven very reliable over the past decade or more, for all the components involved, and especially so if you don't drive it hard all the time like you mentioned. They only make around 5psi of boost.

The 4th gens have been around for a while and used to be expensive too, but still not many superchargers in them when there are quite a few documented for the Tacomas and FJ's. I think that speaks to the typical owner's mentality or use case towards their 4Runners, not towards their expendable cash. Do you realize how many 3rd gens have superchargers? They are even cheaper than our's.

I'm not going to do his research for him, and I'm definitely not going to act like his dad. Everybody knows no mods are free.

Im just doing some digging, I like the idea of more power, and its obviously must require some maintenance, but if I can learn to do the work myself it might be fun/rewarding. I like the idea of a warranty.

This kit is intercooled and centrifugal, big plus over roots style blowers typical heat soak, but the power is more progressive versus instantaneous. Comes with software to help keep the vehicle safe, ect. Claims 150 WHP gain which is huge, as factory was 201 WHP to 355? The warranty is on the supercharger itself, but the software they describe is really cool. Seems like this kit has it all sorted, comes with plugs, fuel system, ect. Interesting stuff, I wonder how the transmission and other components hold up to the power if this miraculously works as described.

Would it be cheaper to find a v8 and modify that?

No. The 2uz (V8) shares a lot of the same parts as the 1UZ which is what comes in some Lexus cars (Sc400) that some people turbo and tune to crazy amounts of power. Some even swap the 1UZ into Supras and the like. But the most I have seen someone do to the 2UZ in our vehicles is supercharge it. In which case the 1GR has more aftermarket support and some guys with Tacomas have gotten quite a bit of horsepower from them with a URD supercharger + extras. So if you wanted more HP than just what the superchargers can give you I would stick with the V6 unless you really want to spend some money and break new ground with a built 2UZ.

I bet it kills you that I'm considering buying a Miata just to spend about 5 times its value on a v8 swap. Its about being able to do it for me. I also don't understand how anyone could question a 6k mod on 4runners when I've looked at the cost of bumpers alone getting me to about 4k. Add rims and tires and now I'm at that 6K mark. I still need to install the DT headers as well, Since I've sat on those for 2 years now...

I know but the V8s are getting cheap. I just bought one with 170k for $2300. Needs some TLC but its a no rust car. I actually have had a chance to drive it around town and I can really feel teh v8 power especially when coming around corners at abotu 20mph. Much more responsive. Im ok spending 6k to supercharge the v6, but If I can get good money for my V6 and buy a V8 and get headers, exhaust and CAI, would that make more sense?
