Anyone go from 5W-30 to 10W-30?

With the Alabama summer upon us, I am thinking of going from 5W-30 (Mobil1) to 10W-30 (Mobil1). I am not sure if there would be any noticeable difference but wondering if anyone has done this and if so, did you notice a difference? Thanks!

Haven't done that except to say I do use a "high-mileage" formula of a 5-30 (castrol).

But more importantly, Why do you want to do this? Curious minds will want to know..... :cowboy:

It's mentioned as an alternative choice for vehicles that never see extreme cold, see attached from the owner's manual. So yes, you can run it if you want but it does mention fuel economy might take a small hit.

Thanks for the quick response. I have read in several places that as our rigs get more and more miles on them, they can "benefit" from a heavier weight oil. The manual does say 10W-30 will work but is not as beneficial in cold weather as 5W-30. I will hit 300K this week and just thinking ahead I guess....

I noticed you have new leather and new foam on your seats (From your byline). Just curious, where did you get the foam and leather and are you satisified with the replacement leather?

If temps don't go below 0*F and do get above 100*F, 10W30 is the right choice...

I actually run 5W40 year 'round... (Rotella T6)

Better or worse depends on your situation and vehicle use style.

There is a new Rotella T6 out that’s ive been using and it’s pretty stout

It’s Rotella T6 5w30 Multi Car and it can be used in gas or diesels. CK-4/SN

Should help keep everything clean, it has a stout add pack and it’s the right weight

I noticed you have new leather and new foam on your seats (From your byline). Just curious, where did you get the foam and leather and are you satisified with the replacement leather?

I took the vehicle to a place near me (Austin) called "Like Nu".

I asked them to replace the leather only. Yet while in process they felt the foam was shot and replaced it too. I thought the foam felt OK but when I got it back, WOW, what a difference. Besides the feel/look of the new leather (and smell) what really impressed me was the new foam. It feels like it has multiple layers, the outer one is soft and very pliable then the lower one is much firmer and supportive. I would strongly suggest the foam be replaced anytime the outer covers are replaced - you'll really like the support on long trips.

It was worth the cost, about $750. :cowboy:

10W-30 isn't thicker than 5W-30 except when cold. They are both 30 weight oils so at operating temp (100C) they are the same viscosity.

There's really no benefit to going to 10W from 5W except if you can find it cheaper. Practically speaking there will be no difference.

Forums oriented around a specific type of car (like T4R) are not the best place to find solid information about motor oil technology. Bobistheoilguy.com is a fantastic resource if you want to get into technical details about oil, grease, coolant, etc.

My old mechanic (2000-2006) didn't stock 5w-30 so he used 10w-30. No problems.
I'm back to 5w-30 since the end of 2016 since i'm doing my own changes.

On my old Caddy's I used 20-50 in summer & 10-40 in the winter.

This is a hold-over from the old days when bearing tolerances would wear (widen) and oil pressure would drop. I have not found this necessary with a well-maintained 3.4L, or any modern engine for that matter.

I'm in ATX and my seats are shot too, but i'm not sure if i want to spend that coin when other things probably need more attention.

I put this on par with putting pepper in your coolant to plug small leaks in your cooling system vs fixing it lol

No sir, it’s a 5w30 and it’s available through Oreillys or NAPA. It was a unicorn for a while

Have been using 10w-30 for ten years. No problems. But if you aren't leaking or burning 5w, I wouldn't change now.
