anyone have experience with a v8 4th gen?

You must be a lead foot. LOL I used to get 34mpg out of my old 01 Corolla.

My GF gets 24 out of her 04 Outback 3.0 H6.

Trying to get home !! Yeah little to much on the gas. But the stock computer says 320-340miles to a tank when you first fuel up. On my 3rd gen however. I get 200-250miles to empty. If I’m lucky.

200?! How heavy are you on the gas pedal? Is the low fuel light on when you refuel?

I usually refuel when the light turns on, usually at 320-ish. '02 V6 4WD with stock suspension,all-season (as in mild tread pattern) 245 width tires. I've driven even more than that but a change in my work schedule requires a more aggressive driving style during the commute.

I actually drive like a grandma, but I'm on 33s. I drive from the bay area to la often and I think the 75 on the highway and hills is whats getting me. I pretty much need to fill up 3 times by the time I get home. I definitely fill up premature just to be on the safe side(I always feel like kramer taking that test drive on seinfeld when the light comes on) Thanks for all the info guys, great to have a place to come and get info on more ways to empty out my wallet.

I just filled up my 06 v8 last night. hand calculated, 19.9mpg. that is a mix of city, highway(55-60) and gravel mtn roads. 320.0 miles, and it took 16.067g.
the on board display shows 18.3 average, and just over 400 "until empty".

I cant complain.

Have both in limited trims.
Prefer the v8 for long road trips. Wife is more comfortable with the power on tap during long drives.

Might prefer the 3rd gen for short daily commutes as it feels lighter and nimbler in steering feel (same size tires on both), but it certainly is smaller in the driver's footbox/knee room.

If you live in a mountainous area with serious elevation change v8 for sure. Can't imagine climbing serious passes with the v6 in the 3rd gen.

I was wondering about the cabin space. I'm 6'3 and the third gen is fine but can be a bit cramped at times during a long trip. When I road trip in my first gen runner my leg is starting to go numb from the size of the cabin. Getting old is rad.

Feels like there is definitely more space in the 4th gen for the driver. My left knee hits the door panel jut-out for the window controls often. I don't sit enough in the passenger on the 3rd gen to comment from experience.

you may have an issue if you get a limited. the sunroof lowers the headliner a fair amount.

What are your reasons for preferring the V6 over the V8?

Ive posted why before but I will again....
the V8 is full time 4wheel drive. The V6 is selectable...

on the V8 get more than one flat on a trail, you better hope your buddy has the same size and a spare.
on the V8 the oil filter is on the bottom of the engine, hard to get to. on the V6 the oil filter is on top easy to get to...
on the V8 the power isnt much better. having both I never noticed ANY difference in power of the V8...
on the V8 the MPG isnt much worse. again, the V6 gets so close to the same MPG I dont notice a difference.
Everyone is different, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
I had a V8 now I have a V6, I prefer the V6 over the fulltime 4wheel drive V8

Having had 4 3rd gens and twon4th gens. The 3rd gens the most solid hands down. Only issue on those is valve cover gaskets, timing belt, rear main seals. Mine got 17-19mpg about 285 tank on around 15 gallons. My latest 04 4.7 has 218k the motor and trans seek just as reliable but it’s the atrack lights and zero point calibrations costing a lot. There much more maintenance light happy, that and mpg about 12-14. May as well buy a big truck and have 10k plus towing capacity vs 7500 as mpg same. I had a 04 v6 Vvti last year amazing motor, better mpg than 3rd gen, more peak power/Highway/passing etc. Towed about Dam bear the same 5k tow rated but did awesome, still atrack light issues and other timing chain cover leaks etc. Both amazing vehicles and need there upkeep but think overall old 3rd gen built like a tank for less money. If you have the money get a 04+ v6 for sure.

Interesting opinions between V6 and V8. Chains don’t offer the serviceability of a belt, and when you need to change a water pump I don’t see the savings anyway. I just wasn’t impressed with the V6. That V8 is just silky smooth. I find the V6 quite harsh by comparison. The V8 engine bay is much tighter though.
