There are many reasons that could cause glass to break. We use tempered glass in our windows, which meets all NHTSA safety requirements and is designed to reduce the risk of injury from glass by breaking into small pieces.

This rear window clamor is not just with F-150s. Owners of Ford Escapes, Toyota 4Runners and Honda Civics are also fueled with frustration, saying they don't know for sure what's causing it - and, like Tom, they aren't getting any help from car companies when it comes to paying for it.

We did reach out to Toyota and Honda as well about complaints of rear windows shattering, they told us they weren't aware of any widespread issues and needed specific information for each complaint – like customers name, vehicle identification number and dealerships they visited - so they could look into further.

In the meantime, experts say if you have had this problem, make a complaint - both online and with the car company. And if you get it fixed, keep your receipts.

My understanding is that this can happen if the rear defrost wire has a break in it resulting in uneven heating and then the glass failure.

My girlfriends 6 month old Ford Edge Sport's front Vista roof panel is completely spider webbed. $1240 to replace, Ford will not warranty glass.

Just "poof" one day and looks like a black widow spider web. Sucks.

My mom had her BMWs sunroof blow out while driving down the highway one morning. Tempered glass can be pretty volatile if exposed to just the right condition.

I'll tell you what, that glass back there doesn't seem very sturdy in the first place. Seems like it being a bit thicker wouldn't hurt.

True. In my mom's case with bmw she fought tooth and nail to no avail. Bottom line was that they don't warranty glass like that.

Yeah, Ford flat out told us no manufacturer warranties glass nor do we.

It's a cold world out there my friends.

Same thing happened to me in 2013 in my Honda-CRV (yeah, I had a soccer mom car before the T4R). I was driving down I-5 on my way to Ft. Lewis when my back right passenger window literally exploded. Since I was driving by Lakewood (think "Cops"), I thought it may have been struck by a stray bullet!
