Anyone installed the 5th gen mirror covers with the blinker and puddle lights?

Yes, I'm referring to the HiLux covers. At least they are supposed to bolt on. Wiring, well, so what, that is somewhat easy. The 5th gen mirrors, well, the jury is still out on whether they will bolt on. The HiLux covers are $169 for both (someone found them cheaper), the OEM mirrors will be alot more expensive ($240 each). The X factor here is if the OEM mirror fit/bolt up. My point is that its "cheap enough" to try (................ sounds like a plan to me, )

I agree, the wiring should be fairly simple and is really a non-issue. I think $169 is a great price to try out the Hiluxs but on that same note the aftermarkets i've found for the 5th gens were also around that price at $180. As far as likely, or at least easy, fitment, i'll put my money on the Hilux mirrors. The main risk on the Hilux mirrors are the sketchy websites in which you have to buy them on.

I didn't even attempt to mount it. When I get back in town on the 20th I'm going to see what it would take to swap the bases or possibly modify the 5th gen base to fit. The mirror styles are different but my body man seems to think we can do it with moderate effort.

I also got a quote on an OEM styled 5th gen aftermarket mirror assembly and my cost is $100ea.

That's what I was afraid of. It looked like it was completely different from the pictures online but I wanted someone to confirm it to be sure. When you say the base, you are talking about the entire assembly base that connects to the truck right, not the arm to the mounting point on mirror itself?

From what I read online, some of the Tacoma guys where able to do what you are talking about by modifying the mirror connection point to the arm itself and reusing their factory window arms. With that said, the Tacoma assemblies look nearly the same as the 5th gen arms, thus different from ours, so this may take a lot more work.

Either way, thanks for the update and trying this out. Depending on how much modification is actually involved, I may still be in. Also, that seems like decent pricing on the OEM mirrors. Was that an offer to us or were you just bragging? :madgrin:

It is a little sketchy but that's how I got in touch with the people I'm ordering these LED bars from. Although I emailed them directly rather than ordering through ali.

That's true. I only meant that they look too sketchy for me. I've read too many horror stories about that site. But, then again, I've never personally used it so I may be way off. Contacting the sellers directly may be a good alternative.

My buddy was showing me his new 2013 tacoma, low and behold, it had turning lights on the side mirror housing. Looks similar to our 4th gen mirrors and might possibly be a viable option rather than the 5th gen 4runners.

Yea, they're basically the same mirrors...definitely more so than our 4th gens. I'm not sure if you read some of the earlier posts but the Tacos can fit the 5th gen mirrors with little modification. While you could technically fit one if you could fit the other, the 5th gens are the only ones with the puddle lights.

Just looking side by side at my 5th and 4th gen I dont think it would be a direct swap, someone would have to make a mounting plate for a 4th gen that accepts the 5th gen mirror style. Not impossible at all but not sure if there is a big enough market to garner attention from a aftetmarket company. The body shop fella might be able to make something happen. I am interested to see if there is any follow up from him in the future.

I'd be curious as to whether the newer-style mirror head would mount on the 4g base. If nothing else, the little plastic piece should be the simplest thing to adapt to the hinge plate on the mirror and the mount point on the door. Even a minor mod with a Dremel tool and some fiberglass to reinforce/reshape it should be able to make this happen.

I just knew stopping by this forum would give me an idea of what to tinker with as I spruce-up the ol' truck to renew it for its 10th birthday.

Huh? Talking about the "covers" I mentioned in post #34?

Taco mirror: doesn't look like it will work on our gen trucks.
5th gen mirror: nope

IF someone really wanted them (I'm tempted), these covers are the real only alternatives. Like I mentioned, they are cheap enough. Figure:

1) covers: $164 (price as of Nov 19, 2013 with Free Shipping)
2) getting them painted: $150-200 (depending on body shop)
3) wiring: free (free b/c I'm sure most of us have wire laying around somewhere).

Not cheap, but not overly expensive either.

As you can see, it fits SURFs N210 (translation: 4th Gen 4Runner)

As mentioned earlier, these are shells (covers):

Pictures make them out to be a tad flimsy, but IF YOU REALLY WANTED them, I'd seal them up.

Again, just throwing this info and pics out there for the adventurous type. My father's RX350 have the puddle/signal lights. Very nice.

Its been many months figured probably didnt work out since you havent posted again. But worth a try atleast. Any luck?
