This is exactly what I am wanting to do. I love the grey on black.

Can you explain your process? Black plastidip over all the back on just the letters/emblem after with another color?? Or was your valance black to begin with and just did gunmetal over that?

I've done the front and rear silver parts on my TEP and just did the rear chrome and was pretty easy. I'm stumped on what i should do for the front, if anything....

Help me decide, Top (current status), middle or bottom.

I painted the silver parts on my trail as well, although I peeled the rear off as I messed up pulling the tape. The front isn't perfect but probably not noticeable. I am thinking I will do the front and rear Toyota badge in a nice red, then the 4RUNNER on the rear in black or charcoal.

I messed around with this as well... I’m running the (lighter) colored Anthracite FN Type X Wheels on an Attitude Black TEP. It’s a VERY tough combo to figure out (cuz of the chrome emblems and silver F/R valences). I ordered Anthracite Grey Plasti-Dip directly from the main guys on the internet (it’s the only place you can seemingly order that color, as HD stores and Amazon seem to only carry gunmetal grey, which is not really that close in color to the rims)... And gave a shot at dipping the front and back valences. First time try, and just too plain hot here in TX didn’t yield very good results. So I stripped it all off (that wasn’t fun).

At the end of the day, I’d really like to see how my Runner would look in all Black and Anthracite grey trim (all over). I have the Aluminum RCI skid up front, so between front skid, front valence, front emblems, roof rails, back valence and back emblems... I have a huge combo of black, aluminum, chrome, silver, etc. It doesn’t look bad, by any means... but I’d like to take away at least some of it.

Just doing the black-out emblem kit is a great idea, but then everything is just black (since my truck is black), and I’m not going for that look.

I think in the end, what I may try to do when the temps go back down this fall is... Anthracite PD skid plate, Anthracite PD F/R valences, Anthracite PD emblems, BLACK 3M wrapped roof rails. I figure that ought to look pretty bad-a$$, and different from any other black Runner around these parts.

But, then again, I may say screw it and just leave as-is...

Yeah, I did mine at 7am so it would be below 90. I'm in Dallas so I feel your pain! I bet it would look sharp with the anthracite PD on black. For some reason the roof rails don't bother me as much. Still may wrap them though, just farther down the list.

Here's my emblem in gunmetal grey from Home Depot. You don't need to tape too close to the emblem. The way plastidip peels is like magic. I just used a toothpick to start the voids inside the Toyota logo. 30 min between coats and peel it before it's completely dry.

I have a white trdp with the chrome emblem and letters on the back. I want them to somewhat match the gun metal grey of the TOYOTA on the front so I am going to do this. Looks much better. Here is a helpful link posted on another thread:

All was 7 cots of black with 3-4 coats of graphite metalizer on top. Nearly an exact match to the magnetic grey of my truck.

I just used plastidip on my rear emblems of my TRD PRO so all the emblems are blacked out.

my valance was already black (TRDP).

things to keep in mind for the process (probably already covered, but since you asked):

1. apply 5-6 LIGHT layers of the plasti-dip from a distance of around 8 inches. no single layer should completely cover the emblems.

2. make sure you spray from all angles (top, bottom, both sides). i missed a couple corners of the "4Runner" letters because i didn't spray sufficiently from enough angles. they have since peeled because of this mistake (gonna completey remove all the plasti-dip and start over when i have the time).

3. you'll need quite a bit of time for this project because you need to allow each layer to dry for about 20 minutes.

4. do not worry about overspray on the valance. it will peel off (see #6).

5. once you're done applying the layers, MAKE SURE you allow for sufficient drying time before you start removing the overspray on the valance.

6. go to the drug store and get a cuticle pusher thingy with a rubber end (not the ones with metal on both ends). i found the toothpick method just didn't work that well, the pressure needed to remove the overspray was breaking the toothpicks. applying a good amount of pressure, you will use the cuticle thingy to peel away the overspray, and with the rubber end it will not scratch the valance. this is the one i used:

7. this should technically be #1, but you need to tape off the valance with automotive detailing tape (i found the painting tape didn't stick to the plastic/metal surfaces nearly as well). once you've got the imediate area taped off, start taping pieces of paper (the stiffer the better) to the surrounding tailgate area with the paper.

i think that's it.

It's really just a matter of playing with it. If I recall I did 7 coats of black plasti dip and then 2-3 coats of the metalizer on top.

I took the front grille and emblems out and did those first on my workbench. After each coat of metalizer I compared it to my truck's color. Once it gets close it's pretty amazing.

If you wanted it to be even closer you could then go over it with the gloss coat. I didn't do that because I liked the matte look.

I need to re-do 2 spots after 8 months of driving and long road trips. I think my coats were either too light or just not enough. Especially on the front where you get tons of bugs and junk hitting it... so when I re-do I am going to do 10-15 coats. Black plasti dip and then 3 coats of metalizer. Then maybe 2 coats of gloss for durability sake

Here is what it looked like when I was prepping.

I taped off about 2-3 inches away and just tried to lay down as many even coats, spraying from different angles each time.

This is what I did first go around on my emblem on the back. But needed up pealing it off and just going all-black... but it's another example of what you can do. I sprayed it all black and then just pealed out the inside of the logo and each letter:

I bought the black emblem overlays cause I did not want to deal with plasti dipping them, paid $80 for the overlays on amazon. I did plastic dip my front valance, grill, and used rust-o-leum for the roof rack. Light sand, good cleaning, primer, and two and a half coats of paint. I will be looking to buy the front grille PRO valance and PRO Grille because I hate how plasti dip looks after a few weeks, nicks from rocks and imperfections.
