Anyone regretting buying a 4Runner with the new Pathfinder out now?

Pathy a little tight for bigger guys, wives, kids and dogs.

Howdy - a buddy of mine ('92 4R owner) and I just checked out the new Pathfinders a week or two ago. I love my 2004 SE 4Runner, but he is in the market for a new ride. He's probably 6'2" tall and has the whole American dream thing going, wife, baby, and two dogs. With my 4R sitting right next to it, we were able to directly compare the vehicles. Now I don't know the exact interior measurements, but the Pathy was noticeably smaller. I think the only reason he didn't feel totally cramped was because he's used to the go-kart seating position in the older 4R's. He set up the driver's seats how he liked it and we compared driver position and 2nd row seating in both vehicles. The 4th Gen 4R won on both accounts (granted, they gave up some ground clearance to get that right?). He also didn't like the fact that it didn't have a retractible rear window, which he likes to use with his dogs and I have also found very useful. Anyway, I'd do what we did and get both vehicles side by side.

And yes, my sunroof does make horrible noises sometimes, along with the brake pedal click, but everything else is rock solid. I just wish it had a multi-mode 4WD system.... I'd rather not drive around in 4WD all the time if I didn't have to.

Good luck finding parts for your nissan other then from the stealership. I liked my 1st gen pathfinder alot until it came time to replace a mechanical part. $$$$ Nissan has always been very particular about letting certian patents run out for the aftermarket industry to copy and manufacture replacements at a lower rate.

Is Toyota any better? I'm not looking forward to eating parts and labor costs from the stealership 5-10 years after buying my new 4Runner.

Toyota is far better then Nissan I can go to the auto parts store and find a replacement mechanical or tune up part for at least half if not less then the cost of retail at the stealership. I use to have to buy my plug wires from nissan because no one made aftermarket so to speak I tried the create your own but it was a bad experience. I had to suck it up and spend the 120 bucks for plug wires. Regardless of the only buy OEM crap routine think of this your on a roadtrip and break a part and the nearest dealership is 200 miles away but theres a regular auto parts store and it has the part you need. What are you going to do tow, hitchike(sp), or buy the part and install yourself. If the vehicle is out of waranty and the part breaks which would be cheaper for you then Toyota or nissan? If its under warranty you can buy the replacement and submit the purchase to your warranty company for reimbursment and get on your way. Nissan breaks down and your out of warranty I hope you carry your credit card and have some room to spend some money. And if it is under warranty well you have at least wasted one day of your trip on the road due to the downtime for repairs. Yea warranty will pay to tow it to the nearest dealership and replace the part but you have heard the saying I am sure first come first served so now after your lets say 55 mile an hour ride for 200 miles you better hope you make it before service closes but that still does not ensure you will be back on the road that day or even the next for that matter. So now tell me which is better? If you live in a metropolis you can get away with driving a nissan have you ever taken into consideration why toyota is more popular then nissan in all the other countries? especially 3rd world ones?

I love both my 350Z and my 4runner. I would say that the 4runner is a higher quality vehicle, better (tougher) paint but I can't complain about the Z it is one of the best looking sports cars I've ever owned. I like it's looks better than my NSX, 928S4, 911, 944, Vette, RX7TT and previous year Z's. I traded my 95 Landcruiser in for the 4runner and I thought the 90-97 LC was the best looking SUV on the road, but the 4th generation 4runner is growing on me and I like it better than the 98-04 LC. But to each his own.

Pitbull... Have you had any front tire issues with the Z. I had heard they were having some major front end problems on those cars. I do agree though, They are very good looking cars.

Nissan replaced my fronts at 5000 miles because of feathering, they also did a realignment (not correct from factory) The new fronts are not showing any feathering after 7000 miles. Nissan also extended the tire replacement for the 2003's now 2 years. I am sure that I will have around 20K miles on my Z by the time I have owned my Z for 2 years and will get two more free front tires from Nissan. You can't rotate the tires on the Z, fronts and rears are different size. They are also high performance tires and just don't last that long. I would be happy to get 15-20K miles out of the fronts on a normal basis. On my NSX I had to put new rear tires on every 10K miles, nature of the beast, but it rode like it was on rails. Bridgestone has also revised the tire that is used on the Z to provide a solid rib close to the outer edge of the tires, to help eliminate this feathering (my replacement tires were the old style). It is funny to read the Nissan Z site and see all of the owners that are pissed about their front tire wear. They think the tires should last 40K miles or more. Most of these owners have never owned a real sports car and don't get it!!! I think the Z's problem started as a poor alignment from the factory and also a limit to the adjustment of the front suspension along with the wrong (cheap) tires. The Z is a great looking sports car that is a blast to drive for 1/2 the price of a Porsche, I don't mind replacing front tires every 15K, for me that is 1 1/2 years.

Hey my first reply here, been cruising the site for awhile.

I do not regret my 4Runner purchase, to me, there is nothing better, even if I was rich, I would still drive one. In fact, I love them so much, I bought another one a month later for the me, the first one was the wifes. Both Sports, V8's, same everything but color. Anyway, could not be happier.

I think the pathfinder looks better, and I am sure its better than the older pathfinder, but its lacking lots o things compared to the 4Runner. Nissan is trying, but they just can seem to get it all in one package.

Is it a Titan? Armada? Frontier? Xterra? No, I think it's a Pathfinder. Last year alone I got tired of looking at Nissan's truck line-up from a distance (front) because they all look similar. Granted I was impressed with the styling when the new Armada arrived but quickly tired because "they all look alike". I can't judge the new Pathfinder because it is "new", but if I'm buying an SUV today and the Runner and Path are my choices, hands down I will have the RUNNER.
