Anyone roll carpetless?

I'm thinking about removing the carpeting in my 93 4runner and running the floorboards bare.
Just wondering if anybody has done it (sure someone has).
I'm thinking removing the dampening is going to be a pain in the ass, and than there is the issue with the loose wiring...
I've brought it up in conversations with friends, some think I'm nuts, and of course they bring up the noise factor.
But man, I got a dog, I got dirt, and I can't stand carpet in general...
I'd love to hear from someone who's pulled it.

Its definitely louder, and there is more heat coming through from the drive train and exhaust. I left the dampening stuff, as it is a pain to remove.

However. After getting the inside filthy, I can pull the little rubber plugs (I took them out once and never put them back) and wash the floor down. Which is very nice.
 
I haven't pulled the carpet on the 4runner yet, but im sure I eventually will.
I pulled it out of the truck after many years of wheeling. I just use some basic fabric floor mats. as said above, there is a lot more heat from the exhaust and drivetrain. I cant comment if its louder, as my truck is pretty loud anyway, and its been many years, but I would expect that it is.

the 4runner being a large box, I can imagine the sound increase is even greater, as well as the heat. since the floor pan is much larger.
 
I run my '85 carpetless. I used a spray on bed liner on all of the flooring. I have a soft top, so my rig is loud anyway.....the additional heat is noticable.....but again, as was said, I just pull the rubber stoppers out, and hose-er-down when needed.......great for hunting season, I can simply hose out any bloody bits or mud. I also got some free scrap house carpet to throw in the back so my dogs can be comfy when they go with me and it can get trashed. I also removed the rear seat and used plywood to make the area flat.

Go to Rockauto.com and choose your vehicle. I drive the same 4runner as you and this is an option I am going with. The second section with the second option is a total vinyl carpet replacement kit for $269. There are also sound and insulation options you can put in before you put this down. I am planing on going with Boom Mat and then put in the vinyl. This way I can hose out my truck and not loose creature comforts.

There are many aftermarket places that make the the factory style vinyl floor covering and that gives you the best of all.
 
Reverse Carpet?? I did

carpet was trashed on my 95 when I got it. I'm building a Baja machine that will be used primarily on the beach for fishing, exploring, running the dunes, etc down in MX. I pulled the carpet, dunked it in cleaner, let it dry and reinstalled it upside down. Now the trashy carpet faces the floor, with the rubber on the inside. I still get noise dampening, but I have a waterproof floor now, great so I can just vacuum or wipe the sand and dirt out. It's not perfect, as some of the molding on the carpet is reversed, so some of the creases are off, but most of the holes matched up, except for the Jack compartment under the back seat, I just cut a new flap. Also, there is a blue stipe that runs down the length of the carpet now at the passengers side. The stripe is about 1/2 inch wide, and blue, not sure why its there, but not too concerned. I'm all for cheap, so this suits me fine . Investment was Dawn soap, and time...

Pics when you do! I was planning on replacement carpet, but I'd love to go vinyl if it's a decent fit.

No carpetless for me. I think I'd love it on a trail truck, but mine needs to stay comfy for long stretches of freeway too. The heat and noise would get to me.

If I were to do it...
  • Bed liner. Paint over sound dampening IF possible. dampening material will not collect or retain water, anyway.
  • Trim rubber anti-fatigue mats to shape for easy removal and re-install. That would help with sound insulation. Double-up on floor above exhaust pipes.
 
I'm very interested in the vinyl flooring option. The carpeting is pretty rough on my new truck and doesn't seem to be factory.

Anyone have feedback/pics on a specific brand of vinyl flooring? I was looking at the jcwhitney stuff because they have 10% off right now. Before I spend at least $260 on it I'd like to make sure it fits/looks good.

Can anyone help me out here?

I just installed Auto Custom Carpet's vinyl flooring in my 3rd gen. Swimbikerun just put it in his 1st gen. I love it so far!

Great thanks for the feedback! I did a quick search by username and didn't find any pics. Do either of you have pics posted anywhere?

I'm a bit confused. On ACC's web site the kit is $467 but on JC Whitney it's $278 for the "complete kit" and $149 for the "passenger area". What did yal get?

No carpets in my 85, it does get warm with that cat right under the seat, good thing the AC works. This year I will probably roll on some Lizard Skin. They make two types for heat and noise dampening. Anybody tried?

I got passenger area only for my 3rd gen and it was $190 with shipping. I'm not seeing a passenger area for 1st gens and the price is a lot more. You could call them and ask about passenger area only, if that's what you want. 4Runner Carpet--Custom Toyota 4Runner Carpet
 
No carpet and aluminum diamond plate inner panels all around here. Man, I wish I had the same heat issues as you guys, with the temperature in the teens around here it barely gets warm by the time I arrive at work.

Coworkers say I'm crazy but that's nothing a few layers of clothing can't solve. The truth is I really enjoy driving my truck.

When I used to take my '86 up the mountain for a week during winter I would carry a piece of cardboard that would cover the radiator up. I did this more then a couple times so if I remember correctly it worked quite well. I got the idea from the truckers that would cover theirs up with buttoned vinyl cover.

OP I ran with no carpet for a few years, I had a buddy try and pour some soda down the drain hole while on the freeway ( back window down ) and almost instently had soda come racing through the tailgate window and smear the backs of our heads and windshield. Man what a mess!! Thank god it wasn't a "trucker bomb"

From what I've seen, when they say "passenger area" in reference to the first gen they're talking about front and back seats.
