Anyone thinking of picking up a Gladiator?

Just curious if anyone is already thinking about going to the new gladiator when it’s finally available?

Seems the pricing will be in line with the 4R.

Thoughts ?

Not I.

The only Jeep model I'd want would be in the Rubicon trim, and at that real-world price point I'd be damn close to Raptor range, which if looking at a truck, is where I'd be. If the pricing does come in a bit lower than I'm expecting, I'd still be in the full size category though.

I can't think of a single plus for going Gladiator.

I really wanted one to take when I give the 4runner to my wife but after seeing it in person I'm out. The dimensions are livable but head room is an issue for me. For me it boils down to cost. A Rubicon will like be $55kish which is just too much for me to spend on a midsize truck.

I'm having a hard time taking it seriously.

I know it should be able to off-road, but MOPAR scares me with their electronics. Looks like they let the Renegade designers on it for a while. It just seems like a toy or lifestyle fantasy vehicle. Something for people that say "brah" all the time.

I've been a Jeep guy since I was a kid, still have my dad's first Jeep, but no. I was really excited for JEEP to bring back a truck, I loved the J10/J20 and the Comanche was neat, but the Gladiator is essentially the current JL Wrangler with a bed. Same engine, same axles, nothing special. For now my 1st gen Taco does the trick.

I want one. It'll never impress me with quality, but I dig it. Can anyone blame them from slapping a bed on a 4dr wrangler? No one buys single cab pickups anymore unless they are running a pest control business. It just isn't sexy enough to make money.

It’ll be capable, but it’s still a Jeep. Just google Jeep reliability and Toyota/4Runner reliability. I like Jeeps, but their is a reason I went Toyota—superior reliability and build quality.

I agree with your overall premise, but it's kind of disingenuous to cherry-pick links that 100% agree with your point. That said, I'd love to know where the 4Runner falls in the JD Power rankings.

Jeeps are cool looking and I've had a couple over the years. I could never take the reliability hit tho. I can't afford two and the reliability of the 4R, my 5th Toyota, is what I need. Having a high degree of trust and faith in my vehicle is a must for me.

Fair enough. Here is a direct comparison by Consumer Reports. Don’t care how CR doesn’t like how they drive/ride, but I do care about the part “Predicted Reliability.”

It really is a shame how Wranglers/Gladiators have and will continue to absolutely outsell quality vehicles like the 4R.

If you account for the extremely low depreciation, low cost to insure(relatively) and high resell value on the Jeeps, you can really make a case to tradeoff reliability in the 4R for a smart fiscal choice and get a Jeep.

All that said, the Gladiator will sell like hotcakes to social media overlanding stars, and I get it. Not for me though, I have become utterly spoiled by the reliability on the 4R's and am trying my hardest not to sell my 3rd gen (120k miles, body rust but great frame, rear locker) for a highlander hybrid.

If I was in the market for a Jeep, I'd probably get the Wrangler because the size of the bed makes it kinda useless as a pickup.
