Anyone trim down their exhaust pipe?

Just wondering if anyone has ever trim down their exhaust pipe 6" or so? It looks like it's waiting to get crunched or snagged on something on the trail not to mention I think it would look better without so much visible.

I was thinking of trimming it just outside the support bracket behind the pass rear wheel. Anything wrong with doing this? Would it matter at all for smog testing (nailing me for modified exhaust or something stupid). Seems like a cutting wheel would make quick work of it. Thanks.

My concern would be if the turbulent undercarriage airflow would stir the fumes when driving towards any of the windows when rolled down. I did this with a sports car and had this exact problem afterwards.

^^^ true it can happen or exhaust can come up threw the floor. I have hit and bent my tail pipe while out on a trail so yes it does stick out too far and low, hit it on a rock and just bent the end a little. 2 hammers and about 3 minutes and i fixed it. A lift shoukd fix the issue or you can have the tail pipe redone so it comes out the rear.

The exhaust will come into the cab. Not a good idea.

Mine got smashed up real good and even dented my bumper and broke the hanger so we cut it off like this.
I don't get any smell or anything.

Yeah that would be fine i just would not go past the axle.

A good muffler and cat will take care of fumes. You need to be careful that your state doesn't require it to exit past the side of vehicle. In Missouri the exhaust has to come out from under. If it dumps down they'll fail you.

I never trimmed mine, I just let the rocks do the job for me

My wife is extremely hypersensitive to smell, so I just left it there smooshed rather than cutting it off. Didn't notice any performance loss.

Mine's chopped off right at the hanger on the frame, no change in how much exhaust smell I get, I plan on dumping the exhaust down right on the other side of the frame eventually.

When I put a new muffler on I just put a 45 degree bend right off the muffler pointing down. When I roll the rear window down I get exhaust fumes in the truck. I wouldn't recommend this method.

i had a turn downed tail pipe 6" after the muffler. it was a flow master muffler... i like not having the tail pipe come out the back. it looks more even... as for exhaust smell.. nothing significant that i was regretting what i did... i had mine at a complete 90 degree bend towards the ground. i get fumes into the car more with my new stock setup that i ever did with my turned down muffler

doesnt happen. Ive had my pipe cut on the downward flow, just past the axle for years, on both rigs (like those already posted). LOTS of us that wheel have done this with no bad effects.

Mines cut exactly the same. Only get fumes when I roll down the hatch window, with out a cat its pretty bad.

What the heck, I busted out the sawsall and 20 seconds later I trimmed about 4-5" off the tailpipe. Put on a few coats of black caliper spraypaint I had left over from the TBU. My only regret is not doing it sooner - the pipe is no longer visible from the side and looks right about where it should have stopped from the factory IMO. Sure I could have gone further, but will keep it as is unless it gets crunched on the trail someday.

Anyone had their exhaust rerouted over the frame and out the side?

I've got the Savage Rear Tube bumper and have been wondering if I can reroute the exhaust over the frame and out between the tubes in the bumper.
