Anyone up for a Canadian ice road trip this winter?

Since they are constructing an all weather road between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, the Mckenzie ice road may close in the next two years.. wanted to do it since a long time so checking to see if there are others with similar interests. Plan to do it around March 2017.

I need details. Specifically, are there any tire requirements and what's the total mileage/distance between gas stops? How many days are you thinking total?

I am from Massachusetts so for me it's around 4k miles one way.. Dempster highway from Whitehorse to inuvik will be a dirt road but since its march the road will be well snow/ice packed making it a comfortable ride. Dempster hwy is around 470 miles and there is service station around 250 mile mark. The mckenzie ice road is around 120 miles. There is no requirement on studded Tires as far as I know so set of good winter tires should do. I did a similar trip on Dalton highway few years back in March with regular winter tires and had no issues.

As of now I don't have any solid estimates but due to the distance i would say atleast 15-20 days.

I did FtMacMurray to FtChippewayan a long time ago on a winter road and over the lake. Single vehicle.

Doing it again, I'd definitely want a group of vehicles. Tire chains and extra gas would be added to the list of winter stuff to bring. And something to calm the stomach, all that white made me car sick.

Thanks, yes will carry some chains and extra fuel.. I did Dalton highway in March had to stay in the car for 3 days and nights so I can understand how you felt

We live in Agassiz, B.C. and toured quite a bit of the Yukon and Alaska in our Mitsu Outlander, many moons ago. That is empty country up there and you will need to be very, very well prepared if you plan a trip like that. I'd consider it to be more an expedition than an off-road cruise, but then I'm pushing 84 and I'd like to tackle some off-roads here in British Columbia for a couple more years. - Ted
