I want to improve the sound quality in my 4runner (10 spkr JBL) but want to keep the head unit. Has anyone just changed out the door speakers? Did it improve the sound quality a lot? Also, is the volume the same as it was with the stock speakers? I'm wondering if the stock amp has enough power to drive aftermarket speakers of a good quality.
Anyone upgrade just speakers with JBL 10 spkr setup?

I did do a search on the replacement of factory speakers and found http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1817&highlight=upgrade+speakers. It is good information, but I was wondering if anyone had actually done the upgrade of just the factory speakers, and was willing to say what they thought about the quality. That thread was full of a lot of recomendations, but I was looking for someone who actually did just the speaker upgrade. Anyone?

I will soon attempt to change the speakers in my 03 4Runner, I have already ordered the speakers (Front and Rear Doors). I ordered the speakers from Crutchfield, which usually has detailed instructions, however they have not yet researched the vehicle. It doesn't look like changing the speakers is as simple as remove and replace, some mods may have to be made. As soon as it warms up here, I will give it a try and let you know.

Changing the speakers will not make that much of an improvement. Your money is best spent on a head unit, but there is nothing out there that gives you the same thing as the stock head unit. The reason I tell you this is because I've already tried what you are about to try, and I was very disapointed with the sound quality, even with better speakers. In the end I kept the system as is, until I find something better. Spent my money on performance mods, made me happier.

Just how many RMS watts is the stock H.U. good for?
It seems to be too midrangie sounding too. The Bass is not all that deep, but boomy, like a cheap stereo boom box.
I'm thinking of changing the little tweeters, in the upper doors, and the 6.5" in the doors to Rockford Fosgate's.
I'd guess the existing tweeters are just cheapo paper high freq spks.
If one put a good dome tweeter, in those holes, it would have to sound better. It's lacking crisp highs. AND, deep lows.

I agree.... I'd think it would help, but apparently Biff doesn't agree. I already added a sub (10" Infinity). It definitely helps with the low end, but the mids and highs still need work. Some recordings sound really good (especially accoustic), but for an upgraded JBL system, I guess I'm pretty disappointed. I'm really looking for a way to make things better without replacing the HU and having all the headaches that come with it. (steering wheel controls, rear seat audio.... not to mention ripping the whole dash apart) I would also really like MP3 capability. I've started to look a little bit at the MP3 CD changers that use an in-line FM Modulator connected to the antenna wires. WXMAN13, I'm really interested in how your speaker replacement goes. Since you have the nav system, does that automatically mean that you have the 10 spkr JBL as well? I also inquired about speakers at Crutchfield. They said that they have done "research" on our vehicles, but they do not have a mastersheet yet. They said that they have doc's that the tech support people can use to walk you through things, but they didn't yet have the nice sheet with pictures and the step by step process to install your new equipment.

I also plan on upgrading just my speakers. I also plan on upgrading the amp, and the sub. The rules for my plan are as follows:
Find replacements for all the speakers with high end factory fitted units. For example, I want to replace the sub with a JL, but I want that JL to fit in snug in the same spot without changing anything. I also want to do the same with the amp, and speakers. I want to replace the speakers with lets say MB Quarts.
Anyone have any ideas, or facts.
