anyone using HIDs with non-projectors?

Let's not fly off the handle here! I don't disagree. Yes, I know it is illegal to modify your headlamps. What I am saying is, all HID's are not projector style. The OP was asking if it would work, or if he needed projectors. D2R bulbs will work.

the problem is to find D2R bulbs rebased to 9006, good luck with that unless you want to rebase them yourself. So the answer to OP is no, its not plug and play and it will not work in his case, you either need to retrofit projector, find/make rebased D2R, get 06+ headlights or say - screw you all, I'm installing a HID kit in OE 05 headlights! :whipping2 :lmao:

Mr. Banks & V8Limited4wd,
I would be more than happy to give you a call to discuss your options. Feel free to send me a PM with your contact info. Sometimes it's easier to discuss over the phone as opposed to email/PM.

Just an FYI.....My wifes 06 G35 Sedan has OEM HID's and reflector headlamps. So NO it is not illegal, and works when adjusted.
There is TONS of misinformation on this subject, such as Melting housings, ect.

There are indeed some headlight housings designed for HID with a reflector. Subaru also did this in the 2005 STi. There is indeed alot of misinformation, and I will clear up any I see.

Sticking a HID bulb into a reflector housing that does not have the proper optics for that bulb, filament placement, light output, etc WILL cause glare and piss of the other drivers by putting light in their face.

As others have stated, modifying headlights is illegal. Personally, I am more concerned about the actual light output and pattern and its effects on other drivers more then if its legal or not. The reason its illegal is because they don't want people taking short cuts and blinding other people.

Here are my modded headlights in my roadster. These are OEM pieces (projector, bulbs, ballast) out of a newer 3 series that I retrofitted into the stock housing. The light output is fantastic and never had a problem with glare.

The answer should be Yes. I have rebased D2R bulbs and Phillips ballasts.

BTW, there are D4R bulbs on the market today.
