chain and sprockets not lined up right, possible bent tooth on sprockets .

although that could be the case, it wouldn't seem to be the cause of the clicking if the noise happens when free-wheeling, because during free-wheeling, the chain and sprockets are stationary.

perhaps a bearing in the rear wheel hub/sprocket, which does rotate with free-wheeling.

Noise has gone away for now. Cleaned the chain and everything that I could access that moves really well, and re-oiled it all.

Not all that confident that it's fixed for good, but I had a nice quiet ride yesterday so i'm happy with it for now.

Bottom bracket bearing. Next time you take the bike in to the shop have them pull it and inspect it. If it's OK they can just clean and re grease it. If you need a new one they are about $50.
Or, rear hub because I just re read your post and saw the pedaling or freewheeling statement lol.

Went out for a little pedal yesterday. This is about 10-15 from my house. Always forget how epic the scenery can be around here at this time of year. Perfect weather for it too, sun was out but it's not too hot yet.

This is wine country.
