Anything special about replacing windshields?

Not broken, but my windshield is so bad I can barely see out of it during the day, and at night??? Oh jeez, it's awful.

So, while in the days of gasketed windshields I did them myself, but in the glue in era I don't. SR5, AKA the Stripper.

Brands, good or bad? Things to ask or look for? Extras that need to be done? Trim that can or shouldn't be reused?

I have removed the rear glass on a car many years ago but I paid an auto glass company to replace it. I wouldn't attempt to replace a windshield because if you don't get it right you could kill yourself and/or someone else. If you have glass coverage on your auto policy, talk to your agent and tell them that the glass is scratched in multiple places on the driver's side and when the sun hits it you have difficulty seeing out. They might cover it. Also check with a glass company about an epoxy or polishing treatment. It's possible you may not have to replace it.

One other thing - I was told by a Safelite shop that the windshield is pretty strong once it's mounted. Until it is, it's quite fragile and in just handling it you might break the new one and they are most expensive. Sometimes the least expensive way to get something done is to hire a professional.

Just my 2¢

A good auto glass shop would have quality brands and the expertise to properly install.

Now a days the windshield is actually a major part of the structural integrity of a vehicle in a rollover so a proper install is important.

I DIY all of my vehicles but I hardly ever mess with glass. One time I removed the driver side door glass and almost dropped it twice. Never again.
