None of the mass shooters were black, and most (maybe all) had no real criminal histories. The worst ones were done with legally purchased guns. So I don't see what your point is.

And here we have a massive jump from requiring background checks, to taking everyone's guns. That's the end of any reasonable debate. Godwin's law has been proven, and there's no point in continuing. But I'll do it anyway....

I agree. So we're back to properly vetting people before we let them buy them. But you're against that too, so what is YOUR idea to reduce mass shootings?

We hear about them all the time. But that's a separate problem than mass shootings.

Look, I grew up with guns. I love them. I have a bunch of them that would be considered weapons of war by most reasonable people, and I don't care.

But there is a reality that is setting in on the country that we have a LOT of crazy people out there that shouldn't have these weapons. We also have a lot of people buying guns right now that never had any interest in them whatsoever just because they're afraid they're going to be banned. The problem is most of them have no real training or experience, and they're not being responsible with them.

And then there's also this "instant badass" syndrome that certain people get when they've got a gun in their pocket, and the hardcore "prepers" who are just dying for things to go to shit so their craziness is vindicated.

What other rights are you okay with having citizens to be "properly vetted" in order to "be permitted" to have?

Is it just me- that doesn't meet the definition of a "right", at all.

Rights are rights- watering them down into permissions is bullshit. And that won't change anything except hurt those who ALREADY FOLLOW THE LAWS.

Would you be okay with IQ tests and ID's/background checks in order to vote?

How about in order to be free of unlawful searches or seizures? Background check first, and if you don't pass- then screw it, no due process either?

How about voicing ones opinions? Background checks, showing ID?

How about any and all of the BOR? Are you okay with turning them into permissions granted or denied by the state?

I am NOT!

By the way, you won't stop mass killings with gun control. It's been tried in other countries (Say- FRANCE! Where they had one of the worst mass shootings on record this year!) and it doesn't keep guns out of the hands of loons who want to kill people.

Say you were able to keep guns out of the hands of evil people (Impossible by the way). How about gasoline and glass bottles- background checks for those too?

How about Acetone and Hydrogen peroxide- background checks for those too?

How about pressure cookers, and fertilizer, and, etc, etc, etc... background checks for those too?

How about anyone with a machine shop, or machining tools; easy to make guns with those tools. Do you ban those as well? Background checkss for anyone wanting machining tools?

The simple fact is there are evil people in this world and there are mentally unstable people in this world and we won't know about them until they "pop" off and do harm to others. There is no such thing as safety. It doesn't exist.

Freedom isn't safe, it is beautiful, but not safe.

As for your comment about background checkss and a huge leap to confiscation...

Requiring background checks create a form 4473. The BATFE is required BY LAW to get rid of them after a certain period of time, but oh boy guess what! THEY DON'T!!!!

That's defacto registration right there. Oh but guess what, it is illegal for the BATFE to keep them, and they have been found to be keeping them- but no repercussions- gee wally that's swell.

Historically- gun registration does lead to confiscation. And bad things always happen thereafter.

No need for Godwin, disarming the masses (Be it swords, long bows or guns) anytime throughout history has/is always followed by genocide; history just keeps circling and circling round.

I am not in favor of any gun control. It is people control plain and simple.

You wanna stop mass shootings, be there with a gun when they start and you have a CHANCE. That's about it.

I'd love to believe we could magically stop evil/bad people from doing bad things, but it isn't ever going to happen.

Like I said, take away the gun, they will go molotov on your ass or use another tool for destruction.

People who are going to kill are going to kill. That's why it is important to NOT put roadblocks on good people to get guns so they have the ability to defend themselves.

As far as requiring training or what not to exercise a right- heck no, that's a defacto poll tax. And it definitely limits the ability of lower income folks (Who usually live in the most violent neighborhoods in the first place!) from defending themselves.

We need to spend money and allocate assets to taking on the mental health issues we have in this country. That's where we need to start taking this issue on.

Not by pissing on everyone's rights because of a few evil folks who do evil things.

The ATF already fails to prosecute folks who try to buy guns when they are ineligible.

I forget the exact %, but it is something like 15% of people who try to buy guns who get denied are actually investigated and/or charged- after all it's a crime to try to buy a gun if you are ineligible.

They cannot/will not/aren't even enforcing the laws WE ALREADY HAVE, yet we need more of them and magic will happen, poof: evil people will stop being evil...right!

The world is a crazy place, it is not safe, nor has it ever been nor will it ever be.

So after all this ranting, WTF do YOU propose we do about it?

I'm sick to death of the position people like you take. You oppose EVERYTHING and offer nothing. A background check isn't a real roadblock to someone buying a gun, and that's more nonsense I'm tired of hearing. I did it this week. NO BIG DEAL.

We put reasonable restrictions on Constitutional rights all the time. There are restrictions on free speech, freedom of the press, and yes, the right to vote (ask any felon). We revoke people's gun rights on a regular basis when they've committed violent crimes. We also require people to get training before driving a car (which falls under freedom of travel). I guess you think just anyone should be able to jump into a vehicle and head out?

The notion that any restrictions are unreasonable is a crock of shit and it's what rightfully earns people the term "gun nut". Your position simply isn't feasible, so you might as well come to the table with some REASONABLE suggestions, or prepare to let other people make the rules.

If you can't see how requiring background checks, which are defacto registration the way the 4473 is handled by ATF doesn't run counter to what the Constitution, our founders and the federalist papers all cover very well- it's nothing I can help you with, it's out there for you to see if you wish or ignore as you like.

Do you really think a test, license and a few hours of training is doing much?

Heck, you'd think that since we don't require gun buyers to take training and get licensed they would just be out there killing people willy nilly all the time, but oh wait- we have HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF GUNS and it just doesn't happen.

"Reasonable" and "Common sense" mean way different things to everyone. It's objective buddy.

it wont stop a criminal intent on evil. it is only an imposition on the law abiding.
perhaps its no big deal for YOU. but that is not the case for everyone. you are OK paying to exercise your rights...

Person A: Reducing gun violence starts with better mental health screening.

Person B: Stronger universal background checks for gun buyers could better find those with mental health issues.

Person A: I oppose stronger universal background checks.

YEEEEEEEHAWWWWW!!

You know what will happen. Honestly. You start opening up HIPPA records (Because that is what it is gonna take- giving NICS total access to HIPPA records- which is not kosher) for gun purchases and folks will stop going to the doc for mental health issues. They will stop talking to their psych's about their depression and anxiety, they will stop getting the care they need in fear of losing their rights.

Background checks have already failed to weed out mentally unstable/dangerous people from buying guns, how's it supposed to be any different with UBC's?

Most facilities just don't have the will nor manpower to report to NICS. So all you're doing is taking away people ability to sell privately. Selling a gun to a known criminal or crazy privately or otherwise- is already illegal. What else should we regulate the private sale of? What else should the .gov get their sticky fingers into? The list could be endless, if the qualifier is "it's dangerous" or "it could hurt someone"...

Ever think of that unintended consequence? Do you think the problem will be solved then? Or get worse?

Or is it just easier to do "Something" to placate people and lull them into a false sense of security/safety rather than think it through and do the RIGHT SOMETHING.

Before you cry foul- it's already happening with Vets with PTSD, they are afraid their rights might get taken away so they don't get the help they need.

22 vets a day commit suicide. They are not getting the care they need.

You attack the mental health issue at the source, not through guns/back-doors.

Seems pretty simple, but folks want to blame objects instead of the people who use them and their actions with them.

Universal background checks will not stop mass shootings. They wouldn't have stopped ANY of the reccent mass shootings. SO tell me again how they would magically stop future ones- I'm all ears- or eyes I guess since it is the internetz.

I'm really never sure why decent law abiding gun owners fight tooth and nail against ANY kind of reform to gun laws, even though they wont affect them personally. Even if you dont think it will make a difference, at this point isn't it worth trying to do something? There are literally children being shot to death at school and you all are so stubborn that aren't even willing to give an inch in an attempt to save their lives. Then you wonder why people label you as 'gun nuts'?

We've been giving nothing but "inches" and miles for years. With nothing in return except hatred and demeaning little names from folks who just don't get it.

The fact that you don't realize this is telling of your understanding and knowledge of past gun laws.

Why not do some research and see what has been passed in the last 100 years.

We used to be able to buy guns mail order with no check, id or anything at all, buy guns from hardware stores, import guns from other countries, carry concealed without a permission slip, be able to own fully automatic weapons, short barreled rifles and sound suppressors with no tax stamp or NFA CLEO sign off BS. And the list could go on and on...

You folks who always want a "compromise" where one side dictates the terms 100% and there is no compromise boggle my mind.

You know what- how about a real "Compromise":

I'd support background checks on ALL firearm transfers under the following conditions.

1. Strike the "sporter clause" from the 1968 GCA.

2. Eliminate the ban on importation of foreign machine guns in the 1968 GCA.

3. Eliminate the 1986 domestic machine gun ban which was added to FOPA 86.

4. Eliminate the 89 Import Ban (since the basis of it was the sporter clause).

5. Eliminate the CLEO signoff for NFA transfers.

6. Declare any state laws that limit the second amendment rights of US citizens unconstitutional.

Do those things and I'll gladly do background checks for private sales.

How about it?

Guns have saved more children's lives than they have taken. So if your laws being stricken down could save just 1 child's life it is worth it to get rid of them.

Losing any life is tragic, even more so when it is a child, but please stop with the emotional garbage and look at the real statistics on guns. I've posted them several times.

Guns save WAY more lives than they take each year.

"Do something" no I don't want "Something" to be done, I want to do the RIGHT THING.

Again, how would a UBC have stopped any of the latest mass shootings? IT WOULDN'T have!!!!!

Please tell me. PLEASE! Why would you do "something" that would have had zero affect on what you're trying to stop? It's absolute madness.

That's what folks like you don't get, you're doing "Something", but it isn't doing the RIGHT thing and it definitely isn't solving any problems.

We don't see eye to eye on many things (thankfully:whoo: ), but I agree with you here 100% as I believe strongly in not having the rights of ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS limited in any way.

As a Canadian, any licensing to be able to own a restricted or prohibited firearm (which has to be registered) & the vetting for a license to own either is done by the RCMP, it's a privilege not a right here. Much different in the USA where it is a right. However, we do have significantly less gun type violence which I am actually quite happy with.

Jermey did I miss you replying to my post number 677. It's has an alternative to background checks as well as mass shooting information that often get over looked in relation to gun control.

perhaps those two things are related? especially when you look at the percentage of crime thats committed with handguns.

This statement should let you know how senseless or government is in "sensible". They go directly after "assault weapons" (a made up term by the media btw). Even though they have so few crimes committed with them the FBI actually groups them with all the long guns just to make it easier.

Hands, fists, & feet kill more people that all long guns combined. They won't touch handguns because it's going to prove it has nothing do with capacity of ammunition. 4 $100 each stolen 6 shot revolvers can be fired very quickly with grabbing a new on in a should bag and dropping the empty one. With 24 rounds being discharged in under a minute. This put the criminals cost at $400 dollars and that is cheaper than the average legally purchased handgun with a 14 shot capacity.

Sensible gun control would be heavily prosecuting criminals with guns. In Washington state the has been a law on the books since the 70's. It says any crime committed with a handgun loaded or not fired or not is a mandatory 10 years in prison plus what ever you get for the crime you commit as well. It has never been enforced once. If you commit a crime with a firearm or any other weapon and kill someone then the death penalty should be a very real and common action. Not sitting in prison after your 3rd time in for life. For killing people every time you get out. It's a waste of money and it's less of a deterrent as well. If you found guilty you get one appeal and then if you sentenced to death then we get on with it. Watch murders drop when the criminals realize that their is a good chance they if they do it they will be arrested and then killed. How have we arrived in a world where the criminals are treated better than the victims?

Gun nuts...i guess part of being crazy is that you don't know you're crazy.

So you completely ignore everything I posted and go straight for name calling. Classic.

Why not debate?

I could say the exact same thing about anti-gun "nuts"...

But I prefer to discuss things like an adult instead of deflect and call someone names.

How about you answer- how would UBC's have stopped any of the recent mass shootings? Waiting...

Jeremy is that same way gunslinger. I guess we wouldn't be shocked they can attack but not evolve with a conversation. I know Jeremy is American. But it surprises me the the superior government run education failed these Canadians. They either feel they are above everybody else and there for don't have to be serious in a debate, they know they don't have a leg to stand on so they spew words hoping it makes sense, or they are just lazy. All are symptoms of a educational failure. At home or at school but a failure non the less.
