When you look at things like violence, gun crimes, rape- crime in general in different nations it is very hard to make an apples to apples comparison. Very hard to make sense of comparing them in the first place.

Really, when you get down to crime and violence in the USA, the VAST majority of it is gang related and can be found in very specific areas. Hell you can almost break it down to area codes and a short list would would be responsible for the majority of violent crime/gun crimes.

When you look at crime in the USA, for instance gun deaths, if you take out gang related and suicides- there's just not that much gun violence.

Very specific portions of our population are responsible for most of this violent crime.

It is a problem, yes indeed it is. But a "Gun problem" it is not. Hand guns or otherwise.

Many people have tried to extrapolate why these certain areas and demographics are this way. It is a complicated equation with many facets. SO many factors and variables to sift through to find the answers. It's complex.

Overall there is a sub-culture that is a symptom of a specific area , specific demographics- and usually both combined.

People have all sorts of reasons they posit, but really it doesn't just come down to one factor. It's a culmination of many, many events throughout the history of this nation, a sub-culture/lifestyle that is taught and learned and emulated by certain folks in lower income areas and certain demographics, a product of many experiences and even has roots in the way our media works, the way our government works and many other reasons I do not have time to type out.

I absolutely would love to see the war on drugs abolished. I believe that is a huge factor as well. It has done so much damage and the flow/use of drugs is no different than it would be without TWOD.

Sadly, there is WAY TOO MUCH money being made on both sides of TWOD for it to ever come to an end naturally.

Human nature is human nature, you cannot legislate it away. You can sometimes educate and inspire self change in a small number of folks.

Like I said, so many factors. You couldn't just pin it down and pass a law and "poof" the issue goes away. I don't think it will ever go away short of genetically engineering it away- and I'm not on board with that.

Things do need to change and we do need to make progress, but banning inanimate objects is a fools errand.

Not everyone will agree with me and that;'s fine, but I will NEVER give up my rights, ANY OF THEM. For any reason whatsoever. You can make me into a criminal with unjust and unconstitutional laws, but I will never give in and never bow down.

I'm not going to claim to have thoroughly researched this but in 2 minutes of googling before my exam this morning I found this.

There were 1,824 gang-related killings in 2011. This total includes deaths by means other than a gun. The Bureau of Justice Statistics finds this number to be even lower, identifying a little more than 1,000 gang-related homicides in 2008. In comparison, there were 11,101 homicides and 19,766 suicides committed with firearms in 2011.

According to the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), the number of gangs and gang members has been on the rise for some time now, increasing by more than one-third in the past decade. Between 2010 and 2011, for example, there was a 3 percent increase in the number of gangs, but an 8 percent decrease in gang-related homicides. If gang violence was truly driving the gun homicide rate, we should not see gang membership and gun homicide rates moving in opposite directions.

The 80 percent of gang-related gun homicides figure purporting to support Loesch’s claim, then, is not only false, but off by nearly a factor of five. The direct opposite is necessarily true: more than 80 percent of gun homicides are non-gang related. While gang violence is still a serious problem that needs to be addressed, it is disingenuous to assert that the vast majority of our gun problem (even excluding suicides) is caused by gangs.

Also, anyone else find this ironic;

A lot of Hollywood is quite liberal, from what I understand. Yet almost every movie, every tv show, what do you see? Guns. Violence. People running around being Billy Badass with guns drawn spraying lead. Go ahead, flip one time through the channels and see if you can make it through without seeing a gun.

Those numbers don't sound right to me based on what I see locally. I will say that it has been noted in the past that many cities/local agencies do not report gang related crime as such for fear of being labelled a gang haven or for acknowledging that there is a gang problem there. Chicago as an example is notorious for mis-reporting statistics so that their issues are somewhat masked.

So go back an re-read what I wrote. If you take Gang related AND SUICIDES out, other gun deaths are very LOW. And when you look at areas where the majority of gun deaths occur that are Not SUICIDES- you have a short list of specific area codes where a lot of gun deaths occur (Fascinating is that those areas tend to be where gun control is strongest...)

In that 32,000 gun deaths per year you will also find listed folks who met their demise by being shot by police.

If you take out police shootings/gun deaths, suicides and gang related gun deaths you have approximately 10% of those 32,000 overall deaths. That's not much. That 32,000 gun deaths a year number needs to be put into proper perspective without bias or agenda. Not many media outlets do that, definitely not HuffPo.

Obviously people would still commit suicide without guns, guns just happen to be a quick and easy way to do it. And obviously gangs are gonna get illegal guns or commit murders in whatever fashion they can. They are already getting guns illegally and using them to kill people...

We could dig deeper and look at the percentages of gun crimes per capita by race, but that tends to hurt peoples feelings who can't just take the info for what it is and instead have to pull the racist card.

So I reiterate- it is not a gun problem. It is a mental health problem, a crime problem and a cultural/socioeconomic problem.

If legislators and citizens keep ignoring the real problems and banning inanimate objects nothing is going to change except the rights of good people will be destroyed and the nation will be further torn apart.

I find it flat out deplorable.

Directors like Richard Donner and Spike Lee and Actors like Liam Neeson, Jeremy Renner, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Kevin Costner and Uma Therman who make millions off of flicks that portray guns and violence non stop. And then turn around and call guns evil and the folks who have them idiots.

An industry that makes its money off of glorifying violence and tons of gun play (However ridiculous and unreal it may be), but the same folks who make that money are anti-gun. Talk about hypocrites...

It's disgusting.

I'd be curious to hear which Spike Lee films you believe glorify gun violence.

That was a mistake/omission of info on my part.

I was referring to his statement that Charlton Heston should be "Shot with a .44 Bulldog". Lee being anti-gun and lashing out at a pro gun person by stating he should be shot. The hypocrisy is astounding.

I could be mistaken, but I think he meant that as a tongue in cheek comment. That the idea of responding to something he feels is a cause of violence with violence is ridiculous.

It's funny when "W" was running for reelection we were told the republicans were pushing a violent society if the ever said the words like "target, bullseye, shooting straight, bombed (that speeches bombed, ect.) the list goes on. But to say that something was meant tongue in cheek in the case of spike lee is probably correct but the left does the gross hypocrisy a lot. When Obama ran his first term the left used these same terms. The hypocrisy is huge. The RINO right is just as bad

That disagrees with the actual figures from the link I posted earlier showing that in 2011 there were 11,101 homicides committed with guns and only 1,824 gang related shootings.

What?

Where are you getting these numbers?

Obviously people would still commit suicide without guns, guns just happen to be a quick and easy way to do it.

Lethality rates of suicide attempts are significantly higher for guns than other methods. Studies have also shown that people who survive a suicide attempt have high rates of recovery. So no, I don't think its reasonable to make that assumption.

And obviously gangs are gonna get illegal guns or commit murders in whatever fashion they can. They are already getting guns illegally and using them to kill people...

Right, but as the numbers I posted above would suggest, gang related killings aren't a high percentage of gun related homicides.

Ok that's weird. I didn't have to sign in for crap to read the article. I will see if I can find it again.

So I went back to Drudgereport.com and their link on the left hand column about 1/2 way down with a headline "Mexico builds wall against migrants...." Will take me straight to the article if you want to read it. Didn't realize it was going to be like that or I wouldn't have linked it.
