anything I can do or buy to improve gas mileage!

Really, just got one didn’t know the maf risk. How do you avoid it?

If you put too much oil on the air filter you will get an oil film on the MAF sensor causing it to not be able to detect the air flow properly, so make sure you follow the instructions when you oil the filter.

Here's some practical advice: reduce idling. Any vehicle gets 0 mpg while idling. Many of us start the truck as soon as we get in, then do stuff like buckle up, mess with the radio, put on our sunglasses, and so on. Same when we arrive. If that's you, you can probably eliminate at least a minute of idling per trip. Say you save 2 minutes a day, that's (2 x 365) / 60 = 12+ hours a year less idling. I've also read that restarting uses less fuel if the engine is off 8 seconds or more. Don't know if that's accurate, maybe someone here does. And sometimes, idling can't be helped, but being mindful about it can help save some fuel.

I have the 5 speed auto and under normal conditions the only gear that goes above 2000 rpm is 4th. Just to give a quantifiable value to granny driving.

What he said. Drive like a granny, and never accelerate hard.

A friend of mine started driving slower and not accelerating so hard, and his MPGs went way up (not a 4Runner). I forget the exact numbers, but his MPGs went up at least 50%.

But it's so fun! We have both V8 and V6 4th-gens. The V8 is realllly fast from a stoplight but if you really stand on it you can practically see the gas gauge needle move!

Driving 70+ pulling a trailer (in 4th gear), I once got 7 mpg with my V8. 160 miles out of a 23 gallon tank.

Accelerate slowly and use the brakes as little as possible, lift throttle wherever possible early instead of hitting brakes late, roll into highway merge exits early with speed to almost roll to a stop by the time you get to the exit/stop sign/light, roll to local red lights so that you're still rolling when it turns green this way you're not restarting from the light from a dead start/ get to know your local traffic light schedule, many times there is a pattern, like the next light always turns red before you get there so roll to it. I'm getting 20.8 around town -with some local highway- driving this way, sure people will pass you but all our main roads have two lanes so people can pass. I also find I'm not the only one driving this way, stay to the right. Learn how to let people pass without taking it personally, drive your own drive..

By the dash gauge?

By the dash gauge?

Yes, good point, how ever accurate that gauge is. Before I was averaging 17.5 for years not paying any real attention according to the gauge, then when I started really paying attention trying to conserve with the ever improving methods mentioned above I was able to kick it up currently to the 20.8 number. But I also definitely "feel" like I'm filling up less too FWIW. This all started out of curiosity but now after a few mounts I will definitely take some of what I have learned with me going forward, perhaps an overall average of 19.0MPG without changing my driving style too much from when I was averaging 17.5 ...According to the gauge that is..

I also turn into the nearest parking spot as soon as possible and turn engine off, try not to leave the vehicle idling but I never turn the ignition off such as at red lights etc. I completely stopped using cruse control and use the AC only when I really need it, and to be completely honest AC use was almost never during this fuel conserving curiosity test.

Put a vacuum gauge in the cab and try to keep the needle in the green while driving. You'll get better mpg.

I put it in neutral when I’m rolling up to a light. I put it back in gear when the light turns green. I am at 20 mpg w/ supercharger. It could be better but I do like to punch it once in a while. :bounce:

Several threads on gas mileage mention the following suggestions:
1) Putting Mobile 1 full synthetic gear oil in the rear diff - especially since that's the diff we use the most.
2) Increase tire pressure.
3) Decrease Right foot pressure on throttle.

In addition I will put full synthetic transmission fluid in the auto tranny.
However, I noticed today that the trans fluid level measuring bolt on the trans pan does not have the straw attached - it is a solid bolt. There is no thru hole at the 5mm allen key hole.
Very strange. Do I need to get a bolt with a thru hole and straw? Why didn't it come with one already?

Might get crap for this but where I live I use 91 Octane gas. It’s more money but better MPG. Better for your motor with high miles and less carbon build up preventing blown head gaskets lol. Try running the cheap stuff and the good stuff and look at the difference!!!!

Not sure about what speed you are running when you go to neutral but above a certain speed, probably around 20-25, you're better off to stay in drive. When decelerating in drive you go into deceleration fuel cut mode whereby the injectors cut off completely. You're actually using zero fuel at that point. Obviously it can't do that in neutral because the engine would stall.

I freshened up the brake system and replaced calipers and rotors and was surprised to go from 15MPG to 17MPG hand-calc'd in my AWD v8...I freaking love the beast even more now!!
