Apple iPhone 5S/5C

Few thoughts...

1. My iPhone 5 is going to be worth a lot of money if they've stopping manufacturing of it in favor of iPhone 5S, 5C, and 4S

2. Is the 5C pretty much identical to the 5?

3. Why hasn't Apple moved to a larger screen size? Think more and more people are getting screen envy.

4. iOS 7 better be a homerun.

1. I also have a 5 and I'm not sure it will be worth any more than the normal ebay/Craigslist price for a "recently replaced" phone. I've had each version and the sales price after I upgrade has always been pretty consistent.

2. Yes, they are pretty much the same with the exception of the polycarbonate back.

3. I'm not sure a larger screen is necessary. Whenever I use someone's larger Android phone I'm reminded that it's harder to operate one handed. If I need a larger screen, I have my iPad.

4. I'm running the GM on my iPad 3 as I type this. I only installed it last night so I haven't had a lot of time with it yet but it's ok. Not sure I like the overall design direction but that is more of a personal thing. Time will tell.

The problem with Moto X-Chip is that it may not be good enough for future proofing for 2 years (contract period). Yes, it runs fine now. But with more features coming soon (with KitKat and beyond) and some may be demanding, i wonder if X-Chip will still be smooth running. Remember, with Samsung Touchwiz (heavy UI with lots of animations), S600 stutters and lags with some features running at the same time. So, if the next round of Android update include anything like Touchwiz stuff, then X-Chip may suffer hiccups.

Fortunately, i hear that KitKat is very light and very compatible with older phones.

I understand what you are saying on the X's futureproof-ness, and its no different than any other phone released in the last couple years, my wife's 4s has been laggy as shit for the last 8-9 months and gets worse with each passing week, as does my Galaxy Nexus that is rooted and rom-ed, neither have the gusto any longer to be used without frustration. Touchwiz has always been a system hog and that will never change, the more "features" they pack into the worse it gets. I like my devices pure, vanilla android, clean, light and fast, the way google writes and releases the code before its molested by the OEMs. The "Pure Google Experience" S4 's S600 runs very well with little to no lag, a great example of the optimization Google and it's Devs have worked hard on to implement into each of it's operating system's releases.

The fact that Google is at the helm of Motorola now and the X is their first phone released after the final remaining junk Moto devices left over from before the acquisition, i think it will have the legs and updates to keep it relevant for hopefully the customer's full contract length. I am looking forward to the Kit Kat and the next Nexus, i just hope i can hold out that long. :pray2:

How the hell did you remember all that?! There's so much info and tech references haha

And I wouldn't want a bigger screen. I think my 4/4s screen size is perfect, I can easily hold and operate it in one hand and it easily fits in my pocket, cup holder, etc. That's a big reason I haven't upgraded to the 5, I know it's not much bigger but I think anything bigger is just annoyingly big. I also can't justify spending money to upgrade a phone that does most tasks well still, but we'll see once reviews come out...

EDIT: Having read the fingerprint scanner stuff, that would be really nice to have actually if it's fast. I don't lock my phone since it's a pain to unlock it everytime I shut the screen off, this would certainly change that.

Have you tried doing a backup and then a factory restore on the 4s? It may help with the slowdown until you decide which new phone to get.

If A7 is truly 2x (some say almost 5x!) faster than A6, then it won't have much problem beating S800, esp. in the GPU department.

Well, it does look like A7 will keep up with S800 easily: Apple iPhone 5s GPU tested, twice as fast as the iPhone 5 unit - GSMArena.com news

Note that Sony Xperia Z Ultra is tricky. Apparently, Sony dedicated some RAM (2GB total) to the GPU to further improve GPU performance. So, this is why Sony is able to beat LG G2 with the same processor in some GPU benchmarks.

Two things. These benchmarks are old and does not reflect the new OpenGL ES 3.0 support. These numbers should be even better with ES 3.0 support...for both S800-equipped Androids and A7-5S. And yes, iPhone 5S is at least twice as fast as iPhone 5 in these GPU benchmarks. BTW, when looking at GPU benchmarks, it is better to look at OFF-SCREEN testing to balance the fact that iPhone 5S is driving a much lower resolution display vs. Android counterparts that are driving 1080p displays.

BTW, i am also not sure if these benchmarks reflect the 64-bit processing of the new A7...i hear that 64-bit may help with graphics in programs/apps that are coded in 64-bit.

Supposedly, iPhone 5S has only 1GB of RAM. But again, you can see where Apple takes advantage of hardware & software optimization to squeeze amazing performance. This way, they can also optimize battery performance by using less RAM and running their processors at a lower speed. (S800 processors are clocked at 2.2 to 2.3 Ghz. A7 clock speed is unknown but likely below 2.0 GHz would be my guess.)

No, in tech world, there is no increase value for old stuff. This ain't antique world! The problem here is that iPhone 5S looks exactly like iPhone 5 except if you really really like the black color. And with 5S having significantly better internals, there isn't much more value for your discontinued iPhone.

5C is similar to iPhone 5 except for slightly bigger battery and, apparently, slightly better camera. Camera improvement is minimal but Apple did make some changes...probably the new 5-element lens?? In addition, 5C also is compatible with more LTE bands, if that matters.

I think that Apple may go with a bigger display for iPhone 6...all rumor. For me, i have the Note 2 at 5.5" display. It is too big! I tried to love it, but no go. I think a 4.0-4.5" display is ideal...with iPhone 5/5S/5C being on the lower limit of acceptability IMO.

iOS7 borrows from Android and Windows some features and makes them better (aka easier to use). So, yeah, i think that it will be a hit...and for the first time, it will be a hit for techies.

My paranoia is that with just a few new features of Touchwiz, we saw that S600 (which has same Adreno 320 GPU as Moto's X-Chip) stutters. So, are we at the upper limit of S600 GPU's capability already? Yeah, everything today runs fine...but when you add more demanding features as will be the case with future Android updates, you may see Adreno 320's limitation(s).

As for your iPhone 4/4S issues, you need to restore it to backup, or even better to a new fresh phone (not from backup). This will solve your issue. From past testings, there is NO reason to think that iOS6 should cause any major issue with your phone. Hell, iOS6 ran well on iPhone 3GS!

As for battery life, this is a problem with Li-ion battery that are non-replaceable. All that quick charging etc. thru its 2 years or more is showing its effect. (This is why i am hesitant to buy the new car hybrids with Li-ion batteries!) There is nothing you can do about this...except maybe take your phone to a iphone doctor (at the mall) or to Apple Store to change out your old battery.

From the multiple hands-on videos, it is fast. This is probably one of the main reason why I am going back to apple.

Thai, thanks for the great tech banter and the advice on how we might be able to revive my wife's 4s, we are going to give it a shot!

You do remember that I commented on this thread right??

Do you see my post from last night?

Just trying to determine if its my app or the board erased the post?!?!

Your post is on page 1 of this thread. Did you make another one?

To be honest, I would ONLY get a phone with Qualcomm S800. There is no point in getting a premium Android phone with a lesser chip. Why?

1. S800 is Qualcomm ultra-high-end chip. This us THE best of the best among Android. And up until Apple A7 intro, it was the best chip, bar none. Now, you have two premium chips with similar performance (A7 and S800).

2. Battery life is supposed to be very good, easily on par with S600 (and thus X-Chip)...the ONLY time where S800 eats more battery is when you play graphic-intensive games which is expected since you're firing up all cores and running at high Ghz. But, during normal phone useage, you should see comparable (very good) battery life.

3. Like Apple A7, S800 supports the new OpenGL ES 3.0 graphic standard. This allows you to have console-like games on your phone! And since Androids have nice big HD displays, you WANT this!!!!

So, because of the increased headroom (for performance) and supporting the new graphic standard, S800 phones will be more future-proof over a 2 year contract. Remember, Moto X phone smoothness and performance are partly helped by the lower resolution display [720p]...the X-chip has do less work on a lower resolution display. So, if S800 can work with a 1080p display and give similar battery life, then why not, right?! :)

This argument can be made for those who can't decide b/w buying iPhone 5C vs. 5S. Apple is clearly emphasizing graphics and console-quality games...along with merging iOS with Mac OS in the future (thus, 64-bit conversion). A7 chip allows this.
