Apple iPhone 5S/5C

"Almost immediately upon actually playing with the device I noticed how speedy it is, even compared to my year-old iPhone 5. The thing is blindingly quick with just about everything.

I know you're thinking "But my current iPhone doesn't have latency to begin with!" And I understand, because that's what I thought as well, but as soon as I had a few minutes with the 5s I realized how wrong I was. Is this a game-changer? Of course not, but it's nice to be able to notice a measurable upgrade in power right from the very beginning.

For example, using Safari to browse the web while on the go was always a hassle. It's always been too slow and too unresponsive to be truly useful when I'm in a hurry. With the iPhone 5s and iOS 7's Safari, it's practically a treat. Checking comments on a TUAW story (which is something I frequently do when I'm away from my desk) was a two-minute task on my iPhone 5, but I can now whip through several stories in as much time as it took me to navigate to a single article on my old phone."

"To put that in context, the iPhone 5S beats my 2008 15-inch MacBook Pro by a small measure in the Sunspider benchmark (with the MacBook Pro running the latest Safari 6.1 beta). The iPhone 5S is, in some measures, computationally superior to the top-of-the-line MacBook Pro from just five years ago.

I also ran the general-purpose Geekbench 3 benchmark. Primate Labs, the company behind Geekbench, publishes user-submitted results. A perusal of their Android results page shows that the iPhone 5S handily beats every Android device on the market, including tablets.

Certain models of the Samsung Galaxy S4 come closest, but the iPhone 5S is almost twice as fast as the (fastest) Galaxy S4 on the Single Core test, and still 1.2x faster on the Multi Core test, despite having only two cores to the S4’s four.

The single-core score is useful for estimating the performance of non-threaded tasks. Single-core performance is arguably the most important score Geekbench 3 provides for estimating real-world performance, especially on mobile devices. Just about every task will benefit from improved single-core performance, but only properly threaded tasks will benefit from improved multi-core performance.

But yet in practice I’ve found the iPhone 5S is clearly a significant improvement over the 5 for photography."

The camera and fingerprint scanner would be super slick, but I can wait a year for the 6. Very pleased with the iOS 7 updates on my 5. Feels like a brand new phone.

Despite the questionable "hack" yesterday, this video brings up some interesting points. See video at around 1:32 mark. The TouchID does indeed scan sub-epidermal layers of your skin, as stated by Apple. This is why the banana peel did not unlock the iPhone, but when he put his finger behind it, the phone unlocked. The hack from yesterday is still being validated...and i wonder if the guy's finger behind the fake print had anything to do with the unlocking by TouchID. We will see....

EDIT: updated, the hack from yesterday has been confirmed. See: http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygre...roken-the-iphones-touchid-fingerprint-reader/

On another note, with TouchID, i now have a complex password on my phone because i no longer need a simple password for quick access.

A good summary article about TouchID hack: Here?s what you need to know about the Apple TouchID ?hack? ? Tech News and Analysis

Fair statement from article:

Noting that there are several ways of detecting living tissue — current flowing between the finger and device; minuscule changes in the fingerprint’s geometry to indicate a pulse — Engling suggested that Apple may have allowed the flaw when trying to balance security and ease of use. “In the end you have to shift the balance to more comfort, and that’s apparently what Apple did,” he said. “Out in the field, people would have problems unlocking their iPhones if they were to be too strict. This is a basic problem of biometrics.”

I understand roughly half of the terms flying around, but this info is good stuff. sort of makes me feel like an idiot.

i lyke mah eyefone. it duz gud fer me. will probly buy 5ess suun

^ Thats very interesting. Apple is usually one step ahead of the curve, and just plays it nice and quiet.

More info about M7 processor: More M7 details: data storage, battery life, Android motion coprocessor adoption | 9to5Mac

"As such, ARGUS no longer takes up any battery power while running in the background and the stated battery life from Apple – 10 hours 3G talk time, 250 hours of standby – will stay exactly the same.

The M7 stores up to seven days worth of step information.

Moto X has its own version of motion tracking and 4.3 includes support for activity detection, but nothing matches the low-power capabilities of the M7."

iPhone 5S battery life vs. other iOS devices: iPhone 5S battery life tests vs iOS family » Phone Reviews

"Each device was full charged and then for the sake of fairness every factor that drains the battery was enabled. This meant that the brightness was on maximum, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cell Phone were all on and the auto-lock was turned off.

The devices were all then left running the Fruit Ninja game and filmed with a time-lapse camera. One by one the various iOS devices ran out of power and the timings were given for each. The first device to turn off was the iPod touch 2nd generation on 2 hours and 27 minutes swiftly followed by the iPhone 3G on 2 hours and 39 minutes and then the iPod touch 1st generation on 2 hours and 44 minutes.

There was then quite a gap until the iPhone 4S gave up the ghost at 3 hours and 38 minutes and then another longish gap until the iPad 3 turned off on 4 hours and 15 minutes. The iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and 5C then all ran out of juice within minutes of each other, on 4 hours 21 minutes, 4 hours 24 minutes and 4 hours 30 minutes respectively.

The last device left standing was the iPad mini that lasted a more impressive 5 hours 8 minutes. We should point out that these times are significantly less than everyday use would probably account for, and less intensive functions would mean much longer battery life times."

Samsung caught cheating (again!) with Note 3 benchmarking...but this time, it is downright ridiculous: Note 3?s benchmarking ?adjustments? inflate scores by up to 20% | Ars Technica

Apparently, HTC One also does some extra oomph in benchmarking, but not nearly as blatant as Samsung, esp with Note 3.

And for the most part, DESPITE the cheating, Note 3 still ranks behind 5S in CPU performance and about equal to 5S on GPU performance. Without the cheating, Apple iPhone 5S A7 dual-core running at a mere 1.3GHz and 1GB RAM beats Note 3 easily. (And for spec fans like DWC, Note 3 has quad-core S800 [latest & best Android chip by far], 3GB RAM, clocked at 2.3 Ghz, and running latest Android software 4.3.)

not sure if this is the right place to post but does anyone have any toyota themed wallpapers for iphone 5 and higher? i prefer 4runner 5th gen or just the toyota logo in HD. Thanks.

I listen to earphones (Klipsch X7i) everyday on my long drive to work and back. So, phone audio performance (thru earphones) is very important to me. I found this link regarding iPhone 5 audio performance: iPhone 5 Audio Quality Measurements

Very impressive! According to GSMArena (Apple iPhone 5s review: Step by step - GSMArena.com), iPhone 5S audio player is slightly better than iPhone 5 (which was excellent already)...so, this is just icing on the cake! :)

(iPod Touch 5G did slightly better than iPhone 5 in lab testing: iPod Touch 5G Audio Quality Measurements)

EDIT: What Hi-Fi confirms 5S (and 5) audio performance superiority: http://www.whathifi.com/review/apple-iphone-5s

You can visit this link on your iPhone: https://www.google.com/#q=HD+wallpaper+with+Toyota+

Then just tap on the picture/wallpaper that you like and save to your Photo. From there, you can create wallpaper on your iPhone.

This is pretty funny...link: Qualcomm VP: Apple A7 chip is a marketing gimmick - GSMArena.com news

Quotes:

However, according to Qualcomm's senior vice president and head of marketing Anand Chandrasekher, the 64-bit architecture of the A7 chip is a "marketing gimmick."

"I think they are doing a marketing gimmick. There’s zero benefit a consumer gets from that," states Chandrasekher.
-------------------------------------------------------
BUT, then he says this:

"The exec revealed that Qualcomm is also working to release a 64-bit mobile processor, as it makes sense from an "engineering efficiency standpoint.""

:D That absolutely made no sense! Thanks for being childish about it!
