ARC's '98 build thread

It started about a month (4/15/14) ago when I picked up my 1998 SR5, V6, 5-speed, 4wd with E-locker. It was just the truck I had been waiting for. Found it posted for 15 minutes on craigslist before calling and driving for a few hours to pick it up.

When we first got it.

The first "mod" I did after getting some issues fixed up was getting my Tepui RTT mounted. I built a rack using uni-strut loosely based on the write-up given by Tepui.

I planned to use this section of rail in front of the tent to mount a Hi-Lift but am not 100% I am going to have enough room. If I can't find a functional use for it I will probably cut it off flush.

Love my tent and had fun doing this project to get ready for camping season. My goal was to keep both cost and the center of gravity as low as possible. I think I accomplished both. Tried it out for the first time on the T4R over the weekend at San Rafael Swell and the tent and truck performed great.

Today I started getting the truck ready for the lift and tires. Last pic pre lift/tires.

I took all 4 wheels off and dropped them off at Discount Tire to get new rubber and came back home to start the fun. Pulled the front struts to make room for the new Toy Tec Boss Coilovers that came over the weekend. Once the struts were out I trimmed the plastic valence to help clear the new treads.

Then it was time to go pick up the tires.

Then I test fit the tires and started the clearance process. Did a tiny bit of trimming where the fenders meet the rockers and had to remove the inner fender/splash guards.

Just barely clears the washer bottle at full bump/lock.

Today my LC coils and shocks should arrive and I'll be building a bracket of sorts for the parking brake. Then the install of shocks/springs on all 4 corners will start.

Should get aligned on Wednesday and be ready for the trail minus my bump stops (Should arrive Wed. or Thur.) and some gear. Still need a compressor and jack to be truly ready.

Started trimming but making this cut out at the base of the fender.

Pinch weld prior to trimming.

After trimming and hammering.

Did both sides like this until tires did not rub anywhere lock to lock at full bump. The second side went much quicker with less test fitting.

Then I installed the Boss coilovers got everything torqued down and started in the rear. Didn't take any pictures of the rear install since I was running out of time and it pretty straight forward. Pic of the old next to the new:

LC Purple Green White 8 wrap and Double Purple Dark Blue White 8 wrap with new Tokico LC shocks.

Took it out for a short test run on Saturday after installing the SS bumpstops and it performed above expectations. Ride is smooth and quiet and the rear end flexes great. The trail was rocky with several 6-10" ledges. I had reused the stock length sway bar links in the rear (front was already removed). Just before getting up the last ledgy sections the drivers side link pulled the top nut right through the bushings and washers.

Wife took a few pictures while I was pulling the sway bar out on the trail.

Complete tube set from Addicted Offroad is next on the list.

If you still have the front swaybar, the front links are about 3/4" longer than the rear and will keep that from happening again. I also added a thicker washer on top of the factory contoured one. Mine didn't pull through but it did bend the factory top washer and made it near impossible to get a wrench on the top nut.

Awesome Runner. I'm in the process of building the same "roof rack" for my RTT, courtesy of Tepui. How is it holding up so far?

I took the front off because I destroyed one of the front links the first time I took it out. I am going to look for some 2nd gen links for the rear now.

I very loosely followed their plans. I did not use any uni-strut specific hardware but instead all grade 8 hardware. I also only bought two lengths of strut instead of three which gave me two 5' bars instead of 6' or whatever their plan calls for. I also used 14 gauge I believe instead of the 12ga they used. This saved me some money but more importantly kept the overall height of the rack lower.

As far as durability I think it will last forever. I am hyper sensitive about this sense the Rhino Rack I had on my Tacoma failed dropping my tent off the roof and causing all kinds of body damage and otherwise ruining what should have been a great weekend. I have checked checked and rechecked this setup and think it is as solid as you can get without actually fabing something custom.

Yea that works too. Also, you will want to BFH your gas tank skid cuz your drive shaft is going to bash it if it hasn't already. You will not find your zerk fitting ever again.

Very good to know. I'll check on that before heading to Moab this weekend.

build is sweet man! I hope to pick up an RTT sometime soon...maybe... haha

I recommend the Tepui can't compare it too much to other brands but defiantly more affordable and an US product. Also their customer support should you need it is pretty good.

I like what you have done so far. What do you have planned for the future?

Just placed an order for some Savage skids. Sliders and rear bumper will be coming soon as well. Savage is now offering a tire swing for their rear bumper which will probably get ordered really soon.

Planning to put it through its paces this weekend in Moab!

While in Moab over the weekend the truck performed awesome and proved to extremely capable in my eyes. I did find two minor issues.

The first was, as previously stated, interference between the driveshaft and the gas tank skid. My point of can't act was the square weight on. The shaft grabbing the edge of the skid while flexed/stuffed completely. I remedied this by removing the skid and using crescent wrench to bend the top edge of the skid in to where it would rest against the tank. After doing this not one more issue for the rest of the weekend. Sorry no pics as I was racing against the setting sun in the campground.

Saturday morning was very fun and while completing Fins N Things I found I have a little tire rub when the rear passenger is completely stuffed. This should be fixed as soon as the new Savage bumper I ordered arrives.

Sorry, forgot to tell you about that too... BFH on factory bumper till your aftermarket comes! But who doesn't love the tire grind?

I'm just leaving it for now. May pull the corners off if we go for another serious trail run before the savage arrives. Hoping to get a few bucks for the stock bumper once it's replaced so I don't want to modify it. Craigslist is a gold mine if you are patient at selling your junk. I have paid for my 4runner and every mod/upgrade to it by selling old parts on CL.
