We have a new 2011 with 4,200 miles. The idle seems abnormally high, especially just after starting up. High enough that the brakes squeak/creak when holding down the pedal and shifting from park to drive. Have others experienced this and does it go away? We also have a 3rd gen and it idles quiet even when cold. Thanks.....

Have a 2011 LE and do not have that issue at all- though the clutch fan coming on makes it sound like it is idling high!
 
My 2011 Limited seems to high idle for about 3 seconds after ignition. Then it revs down. Sometimes if it has been sitting a day or two, or its bitterly cold the high idle continues a bit longer. Our Tundra does the same thing, So I believe it is just a toyota trait!
 
my 2011 4runner does the same thing with 4400 miles on it. Going to bring it to the dealer at 5000 service and ask them if is normal.
 
Cant say that I'm having that issue either. I normally allow my rig to warm-up b4 i begin driving off for the first time that day. What I have noticed is that sometimes the rig stays in an high rpm range b4 it wants to change gears. Does anyone else experience long/extended gears ratios knowing it should've up-shifted by then?

It's gettin the cats up to operating temps to lower your emissions. It's normal on a cold started vehicle. Thank your local EPA.
 
Thanks to all for the feedback. My wife drives the 4runner primarily, but I got some time in it today. The high idle seems to last for 3-4 minutes after start (approx 1250 rpm) in park, as it heats up the idle lowers down to around 900-1000 rpm in park. After some time driving it is in the 750 range after going into park so I guess this is normal. I just don't care for the brake squeak / creak sound if you try to place it in gear and go before waiting around 3-4 minutes. Oh, well....a minor complaint, we love the 4runner otherwise.

My rpm's drop after a few seconds from startup, not minutes. I also haven't experienced the brakes squeaking/creaking. I usually allow 20-30 seconds for the engine to warm before I put it in gear.

You have an arbitrary number in mind that your vehicle should idle at?
You think the government is controlling your idle??

This is nothing to worry about. Your ECU is doing it's job.

High idle on cold start is normal. The engine is programmed to run a little high to get the cats warmed up (they don't work well cold). It's an emissions thing, and not unique to Toyotas.
 
My 4th Gen does the same. Around 1K RPM at start and within ~30 sec-1 min after start, it drops down to the 500 RPM mark. AC on it will idle a little bit higher. I usually wait till the RPM's drop down before driving. By the time I get seatbelt on, plug in phone and such, its ready to go. Haven't experienced the brake squeal/creak when shifting from park to drive though.
