Are Limited's 20" Wheels Only for Looks?

I thought it was to mount narrower tires to mitigate the lower gas mileage of the full time 4WD models.

I had wondered why the Limited came with 245s, but that makes sense. Didn't think about the mileage.

No. The 20" wheels with low profile, narrower tires allow for the full time 4WD LE model to achieve the same mpg as the other models with part time 4WD. The difference is not much between full and part time 4WD but having narrower tires to reduce drag and rolling resistance is enough to compensate.

The six 'Double spoke type styling' that's so popular right now among most of the European auto makers (IMO) does have an appeal to many who have an eye for the 'Posh representation'! But in this case there is a very practical element along side of this tinsel-town trend! The engineers who designed and developed this 'Limited Edition' 4Runner had a very unique approach to this 4R; none of which happened by accident! Just as the 'Trail Edition' 4Runner was completely designed with the 'great outdoors' in mind with it's carefully developed 'Adaptive Road Surface Compatibility Features' e.g., 'KDSS, Crawl Control, Locking rear differential'...etc, was laid out for the week-end OFF-ROAD adventurer... the 'limited', was engineered and built to be predisposed to the driver (like myself) who needed the extremely tight, sure-footed performance and road manners of a European built SUV!
As one previous poster pointed out, the 20" wheels are designed to eliminate a great deal of 'Sway' and 'high speed drift' that's been associated with the poor handling of a heavier (5,000 lb) truck, due to the reduced height of a soft, 'balloon-like' sidewall. In addition to a reduction in sidewall give/compliance, the X-REAS i.e., (X-ross R.Elative Absorber System), system is designed to defeat much of the vehicle's body roll (and nosedive) by forcing, orfacing and compressing the hydraulic fluid from the absorption device on the inside of a sharp L or R turn, into the shock-absorber(s) at the outside of a hard L or R turn! The X-REAS system is NOT electronic nor does it use any type of EMF to achieve superior road control stability, but rather, a system that uses a group of strategically placed components e.g., flow control orfaces, reservoir, gas pressurized equalizer/expansion piston area (center absorber), X configured hydraulic lines...

When on the highway on/off ramp or the twisty roads in hill country of Texas or the mountains of Colorado, I really miss the XREAS system my 2003 Sport Edition had.
That being said, my 2015 TEP doesn't handle that much worse for 90% of my on road driving, and it has been very capable off-road.

I've been watching for a while to find a set of the 20's with black accent color that aren't too expensive. I just like the way they look. And it's nice to use the same lug nuts. Either those or some Tacoma 18's would work too. 18's have a lot more tire options around 33" tall that are narrower than 285s.

Toyota has a secret program of which I am privy to (don't ask, it's top secret and I could disappear if I disclosed).
It's called the "Donkifaction and Consumer Response" protocol.
It's mainly being tested in Houston, but some other cities (Brooklyn and Vegas) are being tested.
Basically next year they are going to go head to head with Cadillac and install 28" wheels to gauge the interest of Donk's converting from Escalades to 4Runners.
After that they are going to offer TRD wheel baskets that stick out 40" in an effort to usurp Cadillac.

They have the function of propelling the vehicle down the road and supporting a selection of rubber tires to support the weight of the entire vehicle as it contacts the road.
So yes, they do have other uses beyond looks, albeit not much... Though you could go Rubber-Band MT Tires on it?
I would ask the dealer if it would be possible to swap wheels from another model (i.e. 17" from 20"), sales people will usually be fairly accommodating in that regard... for a price obviously. But we do it fairly often, one guy goes "I want a SR5 Tundra, but I want the Limited Wheels" or "I hate the Limited Wheels, can I have the SR5 Wheels?"
Someone will pay extra for an SR5 with Limited Dub's on them, after all we just had a salesman drooling over a Tundra with a 12" BulletProof bracket lift, 22" wheels wrapped in Fuel 38" tires (I didn't even know they made tires), retracting running boards (so useless with 12" of lift...) and other bro-dozer crap. I think at his discount it was something like 80 grand all said and done. Oh and it STILL rubs on full turns on the edge of the body mount. 12" of lift and the 38's still rub! WTF! :laugh:

I will not run P rated tires and didn't like choice in 20" so I have actually bought 2 sets of 17" SR5 wheels. Took about 5-10% hit in mileage with E load AT or winter tires (narrower 245/75 too) but notice no negative change in handling, but I drive like old man. I have my 20s (tires/wheels/tpms factory mount) for sale near Billings, MT.
