Are wheel spacers needed when lifting

So I'm definitely lifting my 4Runner and although I have not decided yet on the brand of the lift, I know that I'm gonna go 2.5" in front and 2.0" in the rear. What I need to know is if wheel spacers are necessary lifting a 4R. To me it seems like the wheels on these things are tucked in a little. So I'm wondering if it's more of a cosmetic thing.

they are NOT necessary.
This!

But yes most who stay with the oem wheels do use spacers for the look and feel of a wider stance. If you are going to buy new wheels then you can get the same look and feel with proper wheel width and backspacing.

What adio3x said.

I'm running Nitto TG 285/70-17 on Countersteer-X rims and didn't need spacers before lifting and don't need them now that my truck is lifted. Others find that they need spacers to accommodate the tire/rim combination they are using.
