I'm planning on going up Saturday morning, hanging out all day then coming back Saturday night. We could car pool maybe.

I'm so going wheelin this Sunday at Saguaro Lake and doing some more wheelin somewhere next weekend too. Feel free to come along, its going to be a great time!
 
I want to do some off roading but we quickly found out that the tires we currently have are road tires (Savero's from discount)and are wretched in anything other than asphalt and maybe hard packed dirt. mild gravel roads and easy trails are about our max for now.

We are probably going to head out of town Friday and come back to the valley Monday. probably going to putz around Sedona, camp verde etc..

And here I was at Saguaro (Butcher Jones) just this past Sunday. I absolutely had to go get the tires dirty and that was the closest patch of dirt I could think of. I even managed to get a little trail damage on my brand new front bumper to boot! LOL!!! It's all good. This truck isn't a baby...

So, not planning to hit the superstitions this weekend? I was thinking trying Box Canyon on Sunday the 26th. Was going to head out from the Price Station Road side and then run up through Mineral Mountain road back to the 60 and then home and maybe a stop for lunch. Might even convince the wife to go along on this one since it's such an interesting route and isn't insanely difficult (outside of the rock wall).

you know what, Sunday 26th out at box canyon wife and I may be interested if you pros think my Savero's can get me around out there. I live on Hunt Highway so I'm super close the that area. We are total noobs with off-roading though.
 
As I understand it, other than the rock wall it's mostly hard packed sand with a few rocky spots here and there... So your tires should do fine if you can make it up the wall. I've run some pretty hairy (to me) stuff with my stock Dueler H/Ts...

I've watched some videos out on Youtube and it seems that you can stack rocks to make that rock wall easier to traverse. I think the other option is to take it from the north to the south instead where you decend the wall. Maybe [MENTION=112004]lofreqjeff[/MENTION] or anyone else can chime in on the difficulty level for a stock 4Runner?

I think I may head up there for the Expo Sunday only. If I can get the household social coordinator on board we may, depending on conditions, try to camp up around there on Saturday then hit the expo on Sunday and come home after a dinner/late lunch or something up in Flagstaff.

Its not as bad as it looks - I did it before when my 4Runner was all stock, but the trail has changed a bit since then (9 or 10 years ago) but here are some recent pics of the spot I'm pretty sure [MENTION=116114]cf_coder[/MENTION] is referring to:















Obviously it will be more difficult going up than coming down but that's what tow straps are for :) But other than that spot, there is one other place that has a big rock embedded in the ground that can be difficult to get over but usually isn't - but again... tow straps do wonders

As of the expo - we should carpool - I'll either drive or pitch in for gas..... Megan will be coming along with me... I hope. Trying to sell her on the idea of either and adventure trailer or a off road ready tear-drop but she'll have to see them in person before she'll be comfortable with anything like that.
 
my wife and I will most likely be tent camping Saturday evening up at or around Lake Mary area. I hope to get her hooked on the overland stuff. The trade off is I have to take her to that wildlife park up in camp verde on our way up to the event.
 
Spent yesterday checking over my camping gear for the expo. Got spoiled owning a HiLo for a while. time to get back to basics.

Anyone plan on hitting any trails up there?

Might stay at Khel Springs campsite right on the rim Friday then drive to the EXPO Saturday AM. Then hit the fire service road to Munds park then take Schnebly hill road into Sedona.
 
Ok... a couple comment on your locations... The two campgrounds on Oak Creek Canyon will be crowded. Really crowded. And there is no unimproved/free camping in the canyon at all. There are some primitive camping areas along 89 before you drop into the canyon, but nothing after that.

The campground at Ashurst lake is on top of a plateau and is mostly scrub juniper. Not a lot of shade if your looking for tall pines and whatnot. It will also likely be completely full due to the expo.

The last one on the rim I'm not terribly familiar with. Lots of better options further up the 87 towards Mormon Lake though. From Clint's Well on up there are miles and miles of forest service roads and some FS campgrounds as well.

I'm sure you'll find something up that way though!

Thanks for the input thats what I'm looking for.

Used to camp a lot north of happy jack. That may end up being what happens as its far enough south that we won't have issues getting a spot. Id rather camp in the pines anyways :-)
 
We managed to get a site at Manzanita campground in Oak Creek close to everything including fishing [emoji4]. Here is my #480-620-4627 JIC anyone wants to hit up some trails.
 
Gonna rain this weekend (Friday/Saturday). That might have something to do with it. LOL! Looks like if we make it at all, it'll be on Sunday sometime. May just drive up to Sedona to run a trail or two then beat it home. I can't afford anything at the expo anyway!

Hopefully Manzanita campground doesn't get washed away again....especially when we are there, have to tie the air mattress to a tree. Ahh well all part of the adventure.
 
Megan and are going to hold off and try and go up Sunday. The ground is super soft around there so its going to get messy with all the rain/snow.

'They' say its going to be sunny and 60* Sunday
