While I’m a land cruiser guy at heart I came across a 4runner that I heard could be had for a good price and went and took a look. As it stood it was a 98 SR5 with cloth interior and a 5 speed. The rear hatch was rusty and didn’t work. Brakes weren’t great but the rest of the body looked ok and it ran well. Had close to 180k miles on the clock.
All my cruisers were diesels and hard starting in the winter so I was wanting something easier to run in the cold. Where I live it can get to -40 more often than you would like and firing an old diesel in that weather is a chore. I also thought a few more creature comforts and better economy might be ok too. The gentlemen was look for 4k when we started and I got him down to considerably less….less than half less.
The truck was from eastern Canada and needed an inspections to be registered in Alberta. I knew it wouldn’t pass and a failed attempt to persuade the inspector didn’t help. They call a few different things on the inspection. I took care of all of these and got it registered in December of 2011. The truck didn’t get much use and basically sat until Sept of 2012. I had been thinking on simply driving it into the ground as a winter beater daily driver. That was all fine and dandy till I really started to like it.
After a few consultations with friends some pieces fell into place and I started my “build”. The funny thing about this project so far is the fact it has only happened over the past couple weeks. Here is what I’ve done so far:
For inspection:
New drivers caliper
New drivers wheel bearing
Repaired emergency brake
Repaired some lights
Replaced rear axle seal
Some maintenance:
Replaced Transfer case
Base lined Fluids
The build part:
Roof Rack installed (aluminum rack painted flat black)
ARB bull bar with 8k King One winch installed
Sonoran Steel 1.2a Lift installed
Painted factory rims black and wrapped them in 285 BFG AT’s
Built BAMF style sliders with kickouts
Rocker chop to install sliders. (rockers were rotten anyway)
ARB Fridge
Still to install:
Aussie Rear locker
CB radio
Aux Battrery and Electrical setup
Block heater and coolant flush
Custom built rear bumper (need to design and build this one still)
Rear Drawer with fold out sleep platform
On the Wish list:
Supercharger
OBA
Now for the pics:
This was the roof rack I picked up off Kijiji. Turned out pretty good and will work on my cruiser too.

A trip back to Saskatchewan to get my bigger tires and mount them on factory painted rims…
Then back to Edmonton Area for some light exploring….
