AssBurns 2000 Limited Build Thread

It appears to be worse than I thought. I just cut the cracks where I could and threw a bead or two down on each crack. It is not perfect nor will it be permanent but it should hold till I figure out what exactly I will do. I may, for now, make a plate for the top of the shock towers to brace it a bit. The plan is to go to coilovers soon and redo the towers to be a direct fit for the coilovers. I will warranty the LCA when I have time to swap it out since it is only like 2 months old.

Rebuilding shock towers, replacing LCA, etc I say cut it all off and SAS!!:guitar2::guitar2:

I've gotta ask, have you jumped it or anything? I'm just surprised by the cracks, I haven't really seen much of that before..

That saw cuts fast. I'm suuuuper impressed, and jealous!!

Also, I normally keep up on your build, but I missed the past two weeks or so but went back and so much happened! The bumper and links are looking sweet!

Supply me with some axles and a couple grand to get the ball rolling and I'll be more than happy to SAS. I've been debating a SAS or long travel for a while now but I just don't have the funds yet. I think I might save a SAS for a 2nd gen pickup so I can have a dedicated beater vehicle. It all depends on funds though.
derpiful Have I jumped it? Well I have not purposely hit a jump. Have I gotten all tires off the ground at once? Yes. Way too many times as you can see.
Also I did hit a section of whoops going pretty damn fast. More than once. [emoji51]
The saw is pretty awesome for sure. Sometime I think I spent too much money, then I go to use it and realize it was worth the investment.
Thanks on the links and bumper. I'm pretty stoked how they turned out as well.

I hear ya. I go back and forth about SAS. A second dedicated rig to wheel is really nice, I need to get a motor back in mine. LOL

I honestly doubt I'll ever SAS this vehicle. I'd rather keep it more of an all arounder that is comfortable for the family. I know if I SAS, I will beat it up too much. Maybe LT someday if I find a good deal on a kit. The standard LT kits on the market don't seem like they are worth the cost for the mild gain in travel.
Eventually I'd like to build something that can handle the fast stuff pretty well and the technical/crawling stuff too. I have lots of ideas and not enough money haha. I also would like to learn some CAD programs to design and build stuff more effectively.

Your rear bumper looks awesome. Great job.

Sorry to see those cracks. Was that LCA an OEM?

Thank you! BrianSD_42
The LCA was just replaced with Mevotec (I think). The original OEM was ovaled really bad where the bushings press in so I had to replace it. Got a good deal on the Mevotec brand. I am going to try to warranty the LCA though.

You may have luck with buying a used LCA from a member here for the cheap. The bushings can be purchased and replaced with new, into a used OEM LCA. I'd stay away from poly bushings though. They squeek compared to OEM.

I may have to look into a used OEM LCA. I'm sure that it is probably stronger than an aftermarket LCA. As for the poly bushings, I would rather have a little squeaking than keep replacing bushings. The rubber bushings just don't last like the poly ones do. I have whiteline bushings now and like them so far.

Have you found any aftermarket ones? I've been looking all over for something stronger than OEM.

I think Unner had a set of OEM front LCA available.

So we are out here at North Glamis Hot Springs which is actually a lot cooler than I expected. Did about 72 miles today offroad. Overall a super cool day besides getting rear ended my by brother. I was dead stopped and he hit me at probably like 30 miles an hour. Everyone is fine luckily. His air bag went off and front end is kinda jacked. My rear end is pretty ****ed. Freshly finished bumper is all tweaked, hatch can't close all the way and is all smashed in. Hopefully getting insurance money so I can put it towards a new vehicle and make this an offroad only vehicle.

that sucks and is great at the same time. Glad nobody was hurt. 30 is pretty fast if you're at a dead stop.

Why did you change LCA's?
Willing to sell the passenger side only?

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I changed them because I thought the bushings in mine were bad and causing my clunk, but it turned out to be my transmission mount/shrockworks skid plate. I'd rather keep them as a pair, but I'd consider separating.

Also sorry to hear about the accident with the truck, glad no one is injured and hopefully you can get her back on the road without too much trouble.

When I said I got hit at 30 mph I misunderstood what my brother told me. He said he was driving at 30 mph before he hit his brakes. He said the actual impact was probably 20 mph. Either way it sucked and was a pretty good hit, but nobody was hurt.
Here are some of the damages. Now my hatch doesn't close nice and tight like before, causing the hatch to rattle over bumps. Bumper is bent up but can be salvaged with some work.

I knew I should have added another plate and set off bolts right here but unfortunately didn't do it.

Still deciding whether it will be better to go through insurance or not. We are going to go down on Saturday to get some quotes for repairs to see what it will cost to fix, then talk to our agent to see what he thinks we should do. I'm guessing insurance will be the best bet but my brother would like to try to avoid it if possible.

That needs a pull to get that wrinkle out of the quarter and make a replacement hatch square up with the opening...

(Got a come-along and a tree?)

Sorry that happened!

Swapped my rear hatch today. Turned out to be a much bigger pain in the ass than I expected.
Yesterday my brother and I went and got a couple quotes for the repairs. While we we waiting my brother started looking online for replacement parts (Hatch, Tail Light). We decided to hit up the local pick-a-part to find a hatch. We found a '98 SR5 with a clean hatch that matches paint, or at least very close to matching. I think my paint has a little more metallic to it but looks like the same color. We grabbed the tail light while we were at it. For both things, the total cost was $80.10. Swapping the hatch itself was super easy with my brother helping with holding up the weight. I went to plug it in and noticed one of the connectors was different. The '98 hatch had a 10 pin connector while the 2000 has a 4 pin. Did a little googling and heard someone talk about swapping the whole harness from the '00 to the '98 hatch. I wasn't 100% sure this would work but I tried it anyway. Luckily all the connectors for the lock, window, wiper, lights, etc were the same. Swapping the harness was easy except trying not to break all the clips. Also swapped out the lock barrel for the hatch. Everything works properly but was not expecting that much work just for the damn hatch.

I went to swap the tail light housing too but since the quarter panel is so tweaked, the light doesn't fit at all. I'll be rockin the broken tail light until I decide what to do. I pulled the bumper and I think I can straighten it out with a BFH. I threw in some ear plugs and went to town with a 4lbs hammer but eventually broke the hammer before I could finish. It looks pretty close to being straight already.
