So I have owned my 96 t4r since late '08 with 89k miles and it has been a good ride. Did Tundra 13WL brakes in 2010 as well as new tires. Had to do the headgaskets in '14 at 135k due to the issue with the 96's and did the timing belt/waterpump/fan clutch/belts/hoses/knock sensors/external tranny cooler at the same time. Also I installed new OTRE and ITRE's then as well. Last year I put on new rear control arms, rear Moog springs and new shocks. Although I did Febest bars and shoud've gone Toyota as the bushings are starting to crack.
Over the last few months I did new pads/rotors in the front, new rear shoes and drums just a few weekends ago as well as new endlinks all around. Have been chasing a rear driveshaft issue that has been baffled and frustrated as some may have seen in my other post.
Tuesday, while on my way to work, the tranny decided it wanted some attention as well. It threw a P0753 code and it is in the shop right now as I didn't have the time to work on it. So it is getting a new #1 solenoid and new fluid by a local shop.
The truck will need new tires soon as well as rebuilding the front end. I have never touched the LBJ's, UBJ's, shocks, etc. It will need new tires soon as well. So I still have more $$ that needs to go into the 4runner. But being a FL truck it is in great shape with no rust.
Throughout the last year I have been kicking around the idea of getting a newer car. When I bought this I wanted a Tacoma double cab, but could find a good deal. Came across this 4runner and it was a great deal and I love it. Recently I found an 08 Double cab 4x4 TRD in my price range with 91k and thinking about pulling the trigger.
I know I have put a decent amount of money in the 4runner recently and trading it in I wont get it back. The newer truck also means a car payment which I havent had in the last 3-4 years. However it would be really nice to have a newer truck with 70k less miles and a very clean, dealer maintained, CarFax.
Any thoughts are appreciated. Anyone do the same and regret it? Or stay with their 4runner and regret it?
I've been driving 44 years / and always purchase used vehicles...and drive them 4-14 years, many 7-8 years on average.
- a few have been a money pit, keeping one year to long
- stretching 7 years of ownership into 8 years...can prove to be very costly, as miles add up
- I always enjoyed a tad more HP and creature comforts, in newer vehicles
- like PWD, PDL, AIR, leather interior, moon roof, etc.
The technology & performance in my wife's 2008 RAV4 Limited v6-269HP, 4x4 is truly amazing.
And much better gas mileage / leaves it very cheap to operate.
- don't get me wrong, I love my 2000 4Runner SR5...but only run 5,000 Km/year = 3K miles
- but wife's vehicle is overall much-more satisfying, for the longer & daily work commute or family outing
- with heated leather seats, heated lower windshield to keep wipers from freezing up, heated mirrors...a Canadian thing
- the RAV4 even has the tow package coolers built in with HD rad & alternator
If I went down to only one 4x4 main-vehicle, I would probably get a 2008-9 4Runner, Highlander or Tacoma pickup.
- or wind up with our sons Lexus RX350 / when he is ready to upgrade...Gen3 T4R is great, for my short trip vehicle
weezykid - your 1996 T4R is worth sh*t dollars to a Dealer$hip, as a trade-in / so sell it privately to fightman80.
A Win-Win, for both parties & your Gen3 gets a good home / with the newer 2008 Tacoma, you can just turn the key & Go.
- I'd stop the wrenching (adding parts $$ and investing more labor) & trade-up & Enjoy more free time & newer reliability.
I own both my 98 4Runner, and my 05 Tacoma TRD Sport. I love them both... but my 4Runner will always be my favorite.
The Taco will be much smoother to drive, have more HP... and be "Newer".... the 4Runner can still be a great vehicle.
I've had mine for 13yrs now... I've changed out my suspension... did bushings, links... brakes... starter, timing belt, alternator... rear axle seals... I've done pretty much all of the work myself. They are easy to work on... reliable as hell... and if your's is in good condition with minimal to no rust... I'd just kee....... er... I mean... sell it.... sell it to me.... sell it to me now!![]()
